I have one of the Mercury Racing brochures and it has them listed as 500HP.

I was wondering if all years were the same.

As far as I personally know, yes. It didn't really change until an upgrade was performed and thus the 525HP came out.

Then again, can't even count them the same motors.

525 got aluminum heads, bigger cam, yada, yada.

i called Mercury racing about this when I ordered my boat with a 525 EFI...my insurance agent said because it was OVER 500HP that it was going to cost me more, so I wanted to get to the bottom of it to try to save some $ on my insurance premium...here is what the Mercury racing rep told me...basically the 525 EFI has 525 HP at the crank, but 500 HP at the prop. Hence, I assume the 500 has 500 hp at the crank and 470 at the prop.

The good news is the 525HP was supposedly 'sanbagged by Merc.'
Rumor has it they actually dyno around 560-565hp.

Yes, the HP500 has 500 hp at the crank and 470 at the prop.

So does anyone know the true hp of the 98 500 bulldog(540 ci) Merc manual shows it at 490 hp at the prop. What is the crank hp? Called Merc and they would not give me a true hp rating. Was told they had to be at least 500hp, but would not give me the dyno sheets for them.

All the Bulldog specs I have seen show it to have the same hp as the 502 HP500...
I don't know about 1998 models. Sounds like they were rated a little higher...

The drive usually draws about 30 hp. So with PSHP of 490, you are at about 520 CSHP with that motor...

They don't provide dyno sheets for good reason. Frustrating, yes also.

I have not see anyone dyno these so I'm not sure.

I can tell you that I'd rather have one of these than a HP500, for even if HP is the same, you can bet that the torque is more.

Torque accelerates - HP maintains.

Without torque, you'll never get to the speed that the HP would maintain.

I agree!
A Bulldog has the same bottom end parts (except cam) as the early 1000sc!!

I understand that they are stump pullers down low and throughout the band, and that it's REALLY easy to get 600++hp out of these N/A!!

What do you think the HP would be on a 502 with steel Merlin heads and a Crane came and crane roller rockers.

Not sure which cam it has..

Sorry. Not knowing the cam makes it impossible to know the HP.

Assumptions are not good to go by, but here are a few.

HP500 Crane cam - I'd say 510-515hp
731: 535-550hp
741: 570-580hp

Each 'step up' in cam will raise peak hp by 200-300rpm or more.

I'm also assuming it has a single plane intake - Merlin, Dart, Victor Jr, what have you.

Oh, if it has a hydraulic cam, the hp will be much less. Mucho less.

BTW: If you are looking at it to buy you need to find out camshaft? Why? Exhaust! Cams are the main cause of reversion.
