I just found, 1990 23 Wellcraft Nova http://eglobalyachts.com/privatelab...im=pp228304&va.
It appears to be in beautiful shape, anyone have any idea of what to look for on these boats, i noticed it doesent have thru hull, how much speed is lost, a guy in Wisconson recentlty old one that was posted on speedwake, he sad 63 on gps but his had thru hull. he sold his before i could look at it. how does the 23 ride, it apears to be a heavy boat. any help comments is appreciated! :smile1: :smile1: :smile1: 6 months left! |

| they are nice boats if your happy with 58-63 mph, the nice set up is twin bbc :) |
|
|
| 89donzi |
| Yes there is the exact same boat except a 26, with twin 454's i think for 29900ish, absoulutly gorgous, but outta my range.someday i'll get to 70 lol! :winker: Any idea what would be involve in converting to thru hull? |
|
|
| chjohn |
| What are the hours on the engine? Wellcrafts are very well built boats but the price does sound a little high unless the engine and drive are very low hours and the interior is in great shape. And they take a lot of power to get into the 70mph range. |

If your going to do it...
I believe, exhaust manifolds, elbows. exhaust hoses, outdrive exhaust blocking plate, exhaust tips. and a clear routing path for all this..... (Mufflers :( )
My factory Mercruiser small block installation manual for my 1990 Wellcraft 216 Eclipse has generic tips for installing thru-hulls as for location, to waterline and engine.
Maybe someone has the factory install manual for the big block.... or better yet, the same boat to send you dimensions and pics...
What is your Donzi NOT doin that you expect the Nova to do??
May I suggest savin' da dough for when you get the bigger boat with the above mentioned accessories....
Good Luck in your search!

My only comment will be the 23 foot factor. I went from short, 21 feet, to 26 feet and still want a more length. My 26 foot Liberator (which incidentally is for sale at $17,990) is a heavy boat and rides very nice at cruise around 40. It does have thru hulls by the way.
My problem is, my wife is a sail boat person and dislikes flying through the air, unlike myself!
So, my suggestion, find something above 28 feet you can go fast and ride reasonably smooth. |

| Forgot this part! I do have a pair of 4" thru hull tips that I removed and replaced with Corsa muffled tips to remove the annoying crackle during the equally annoying 6 MPH weekend restrictions around the Chesapeake. The tips can be had for $50. You pay for shipping or pick them up at my place! |

Next ... tooling ... You will need a 4 1/8 " hole saw and a good 1/2 " drill . You want a drill that will stall just in case the saw locks up during your cut.
If you decided to go with a switchable (diverter type) exhaust you need a set of diverters ( $500 or so) or remove or plug the existing wish bone.
You will need a set of tips ( @ $ 100) and some 4 " marine exhaust hose ( @ $24 a foot) and clamps.
Bob
The part about the drill is the most important advice. With a big powerful drill the hole saw WILL lock up and can cause serious injury.
I have seen a big drill actually pick up a 285 pound man (my Father) off the ground. Another time that my Father was using the drill the bit locked up and he let go of the drill, the drill spun around and the cord wrapped around one of his fingers and tore half of it right off! We called him "nine and a half" after that.
I own the drill now and used it for my transom holes and had sore wrists for days and I used a foot switch on the cord! All it took was letting up on the switch and the drill stopped, But it still gave me a few good knocks.
Be careful!! |

Check out this thread,
http://www.speedwake.com/upload/sho...&highlight=loud
about installing the thru-hulls, done on a 23 Wellcraft eclipse with a small block.
The 23 will beat ya up if you plan on any rough water, We run ours in the Atlantic, but try to stick to the Intercoastal if the oceans running any larger rhan 3 feet. It will handle it fine, as long as you keep the speed down, otherwise, get it airborne, and she will fly, and lands quite hard.
Here is a picture of my boat, 1992 23' Wellcraft eclipse, Bowrider with a small Mid-Cabin. She is not really for sale, but then again everything is for sale. If ya wanna save some coin, and dont need the speed, she can be had for $8,500 without the trailer, or $10,000 with a 2003 Aluminum Tandem trailer. Mechanically Perfect, just needs some cosmetics. |

measure TEN times cut once....
then have someone else verify your measurements and marks!
:) |
|
|
| RCHEVELLE71 |
| I agree, as you can see in the photo, one set of marks, and then the holes cut to a different set, the result of measuring twice. |

My wife called me every hour from work to see if I had started cutting, it took me five hours before I got the courage to believe that my marks were as good as they would ever be.
Turned out perfect. |

89donzi...I have a 1995 Nova 23. Had a 7.4 330hp with Corsa Captains Call when I got it about 1 year ago. Looks like a typical Bravo 1 installation, and plenty of room. The exhaust tips are several inches below the swim platform. And there's lots of room under the hatch.
Mine read 62 mph on the speedo and about 57 to 58 on gps with the 7.4, 23p mirage prop turning at 4600 rpm. So I'd question the 63 mph on gps {speedo's are not too accurate}. I upped the hp to about 500 and now get just over 70 mph on gps @ 4800 rpm {+/- depending on prop used}
Because mine is a few years newer, has bolsters, switchable exhaust, duel batt, and was in almost pristine condition, I paid more than 14,900.
As far as the ride is concerned, the lake we have it on typically has 1 to 2.5+ foot waves. And it handles that real well. Rchevelle71 has a point...run it too fast in water bigger than 3 or 4 feet and you can get banged around some. We took it up to the Saint Lawrence river {Alex. Bay} where there are plenty of freighters and big tour boats and did a little "wake jumping". We had it air born several times and given a proper "take off", landings are real nice.
chjohn is right. It takes hp to get this boat to go fast. Probably due to the weight. But it's a good solid boat. I expect the price is negotiable on boat that you are looking at, especially this time of year. If it's in good condition with reasonable time on the meter, it might be something to consider. |

| Hey guys thanks for all your help, does anybody know if or how many mph diff there is between the thru~hull and non thru~hull. I actually am gettin ready to call em right now, from what i can see i would immediatly put a drive shower, and a nose cone, immedatly then the thru~hull. The donzi is a great boat as i said i have a family now and my father is remarried, so well you no! We have a 89 Ragazza with a 460 and are running between 59~63, but i hate the hole omc setup, wish it was a 454. |

With the 7.4 I saw about 2 mph gain going thru the hull {on the speedo}. Have'nt checked it with the 502/500 hp. Drive shower is a good idea. Don't know about a nose cone though...
Ask the seller if the Nova has bolsters, what covers and what shape are they in, etc. Also, did'nt notice in your pic what trailer it was on. Mine's on an Eagle and it seems like it was made specifically for the boat.
Not bragg'n, but besides having a pretty good rep., Nova 23s are very sharp looking boats. Especially with the right graphics.
Good luck !! |
|
|
| 89donzi |
Hey bob thancx any luck with yours? Yours didnt come with thru hull? :confused1 :confused1 i'll keep that in mind about the nose cone. freind put one on his baja 24 spt got 2 mph and a much better handle, On are donzi are results were planed off quicker, handled better, even ride improved
sam  |
|
|
| chjohn |
With a heavy boat like the Nova you can actually lose speed with a nose cone. I would go with a Simrek Halo drive shower and exhaust. Just changing to thru hull may not get you any more speed, but it will sound like you are going faster!!! If you change out to an aftermarket exhaust manifold, risers and thru hull like the Stainless Marine system you should see a few mph gain.
Keep us posted. |

| Sitting on a eagle trailer no bolstors says it has bimini top, will no more in little bit, bob not even any bites??? :confused1 :confused1 :confused1 i bet its nice to have that switch. lol. gotta have thru hull thou, are donzi didnt come with it, But i wasnt there when my father converted. |

Jetmech - mine doesn't have cracks at the air inlets. But does have minor stress cracks in the gelcoat at the top outside corners at the top of the transom. I had them looked at and was told they are cosmetic.
By the way, your 26 is awesome !!!
Also...89 donzi, there was a Nova 23 for sale that I saw a couple of months ago near me. Think it was a '92 or '93. It needed lots of tlc. If I remember correctly, I think they were asking aroud 15K for it. Judjing from your pics, 14,9 does,nt look like a bad starting price. |

| Thanks bob, we only have 1 or 2 23's around here and it seems the dont get out much. So i appreciate all your help and everyone elses. Hey kid when you browse down to similair threads you'll see 32dominater had a 23. hev was at 16900, but boat is absoulutly mint! so 14900 seems good gonna call ri now for hours and other etc.. will keep everyone posted! |

Dont worry about it, You wont gain much by having thru-hull. I did it, because every little bit helps, plus it sounds like you are goin faster :D :D . I did mine with a used set of tips, about 2 feet of hose, and some used 3" riser spacers I bought from Ebay, total cost about $150. relatively easy to install, not too expensive, as long as you dont go switchable.
Dont pass up a clean boat, just because of thru-hulls, and buy a piece of chit, because it sounds cool!!!! |
|
|
| 89donzi |
| It appears to be real clean, the only other boat ive considered is a formula 242ls but thats in oklahoma, a little ways away! i wanted graig223's 223ls but was a little much for me. I definetly like this Nova and eems extremely nice for the $$ We'll half to see what we can do. I've got her approval thats the bigest step. lol And the conversion to thru~hull doesnt seem to be a big deal after talking to everyone! But i mught not go faster but at least everyone will no im there! |

I think cjohn is right. How many 1990 23 ft. boats without all the bells and whistles fetch 15k.
No, never saw it before. Alexandria Bay where the broker/boat seems to be located is about 100 miles or so north of Syracuse. The wife and I rented a cottage on an island about 5 mi. north of Alex Bay this summer. We did see another 23 Nova at a launch site but it had the Spyder graphics, not the boat you're looking at. We don't see alot of Nova's around. 23s or 26s. |
|
|
| 89donzi |
Ya you guys bring up a good point, the guy who owns the boat lives in~around syracuse and uses it on 1 of the fingers or onieda not sure. I gues he hardly ever goes up to ontario. that compared with the apparent condition of boat is why i can sorta believe it has lower hours. Not many around here either, i know of a couple 26's with twins, and 1 23 that is a 94~95 or so. i believe it would also be considered a spyder graphix.

The 23 will handle 2s and 3s just fine. In fact, I've found that they're about the most fun!! :D But as mentioned before when ya get into bigger stuff you can get banged around some, depending on speed.
If you were looking at a 26 you'd be asking how it handles 4s to 5s. Not a slam 89....just a simple fact, we all want bigger and faster, myself included. I think it's some kind of a disease or condition we develop once we get a little taste of speed  :devious: |

89, Not many people would consider a boat a good investment. However most people would consider real estate a good investment. I'd opt for the house, I'd hate myself....but I would definitely go for the house.
I bought my Nova from a relatively young guy {early 30s, allot younger than me}. The boat was in beutiful condition, still is. And it appeared obvious that he wasn't thrilled about selling it{almost had to give him visitaion rights}. He and the wife had recently had their 2nd young'n. He sold the Nova to put the $ towards building a house on a piece of land he owned. It was a good move on his part. He'll make $ on the house... I'll lose $ on the boat.
There will always be another deal on a boat. Keep thinking Wellcraft...their good boats. But then, I'm prejudice. Let us know how you make out.

It's not slow. two 330s gets it over 70 now. I think that's with stock exhaust and no engine upgrades. 502s would push it allot faster, and same weight. Weight is good though if you have the power to push it. Can make for a smooth ride. My 23 weighs around 4200 lbs. That's more than a comparable size Baja or Checkmate i think. And I've "eaten up" a few of them on our lake. Don't know what they had for power though. Probably less than what I have. Put my power in their boats and I'd probably be lunch.
Bob says he's doing a few upgrades over the winter. Says he's "warming up" the 330s. Should be interesting. It is a beautiful boat. Nice classic shape and well built. It'll never go out of style. Yep, I'm a little jealous. |

| Kidnova |
89- The keel of the Nova you are looking at on Ebay comes to a "V". My 23 has a somewhat rounded keel. The dead rise looks deeper than what a 23 Nova has too.
27'8 is the overall length on the Ebay boat. My 23 is about 25 ft. with the swim platform. Considering that, little doubt it's a Nova 26. The Ebay boat has a 454 MAG...that's a good thing. Jetmech would probably be able to offer more info as he has a 26.
My Nova did 57 to 58 on GPS with 330 hp. I would guess that the Ebay Nova may do about the same speed with the 454 mag. I weighs about 1500 +,- lbs. more than the 23. Mags have forged innards so they'll take hp upgrades well.
27K sounds a bit on the rich side for a single BB. But if it's in good shape, relatively low hours on the engine and out drive make him an offer. But like crmax said, have surveyor look it over first.
Good luck |

Got thinking about the weight of that ebay boat, 5800 lbs? I've been told that a 23 weighs in at around 4200 lbs. Hard to believe 3 feet would add 1500 to 1600 lbs. I think Wellcraft Nova's are heavy boats but should'nt weigh that much. If jetmech does'nt jump in here in the next day or so you should PM or email him and find out more about the 26. I think JM was asking 27K for his. Not sure what year but it has twin BBs. |

A stock 26 with twin 330,s will gps at around 71 mph and get there in a hurry.
Bob
That's 'cause you're spoiled, right? :p: :D Just kidding. I expect it would take a honker of a BB {single} to equal the perf of twins.
Bob - How much does your Nova weigh with the twins? And what do think the 2nd engine and out drive weigh. It doesn't seem possible that the 26 on ebay with a single BB should weigh 1500 to 1600 lbs more than a/my 23.
Did ya git yer Rev's on yet ?

That bench must go like hell now :D . Have to order the shifter and oil mount brackets separate? Thought those came as part of the set up.

I would guess that a B/B and drive are around 800 lbs.

Bob, Do you have a plan on how you will plumb a seperate ps cooler in with the two tstat oil coolers? I am trying to figure out the best way to go on mine now but I guess I will end up buying in intgrel oil/ps cooler.
BTW, don't forget to rev your bench up at night before shutten her down, must clear the reverted water :D

Have you decided where to mount these in-line coolers? You will probably need 24" or more of straight away to get this in-line. I was thinking above the bellhousing, but am concerned about oil drain back and dry startups. I don't think there will be room in the stock location.

| hey Bob sounds like your rolling right along. keep us up to date, I really like the 93, as i said im definetly not ready for twins, allow i think if i did it a sc, or 502 would be a nice addition, but it seems like it might be pushing the issue $$$$ taLKS and i dont want to get in over my head, but i got options anyway. :angry1: I don't know if i said earlier, but we have a 89 Donzi, but need to rebuild the motor, me and the mrs. were thinking of going on our own, the Donzi is my fathers and mine, but it would be more affordable right now. So I am waiting to see what pops says about it. I'm gonna start another forum on that topic, check it out guys you have been very helpful so far, o ya and what kid touched on about the wait diff between the 23~26 im gonna research that that does not seem right at all. UHG such a head ache :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: |

| Hey 89Donzi, if you like the first boat you posted the link to on ebay Ithink you would love mine. I do want a little bit more for it but not much. It was a 330hp but I have tinkered on it some it has thru-hull and an hour meter that reads less then 300 hours. It is a spyder so it has standup bolsters and cooler interior colors and paterns. It is a 95 just like kidnovas. I live in Seattle WA but will be moving to FL. Rag's |

Hey Rags - Saw your interior shots and had to look out the window to make sure my boat was still there :)
A bud of mine is looking for a Nova 23. He knows I'm thinking about a bigger boat in the future and has asked me to sell mine to him a couple of times. I have way too much $ into mine to sell it right now though. If 89 isn't interested in it I might be able to get it sold for you. What are you looking to get out of it?
What's the lower unit on it, hp, and speed. I can pass the info on to him.

The lower unit is the stock one I just said what the hell and painted it when I had it off to do the Gimble ring work. Well the boat ran a sold 59 with the botom paint then I put a set of Gil Tips on it with the corkscrews in them to quiet it down a little. It worked but I lost almost 1 mph. I have not had the boat back out sence I did the top end on it and put Gil manifolds with the long stainless risers. My engine guy says 65-85 more HP and that would be about 5-6 more mph. But I wont now tell Spring :( The boat has a CD player 4 Polk 6.5 2 Rockford Fosgate 10's 160 watt Orion and 50 watt Alphasonic. Rag's |

| HEY KID, post a couple photos of your ride. I have never seen a nother 95 just like mine. infact I have not seen that many new body 23 nova's. Do you have the big glass swim step? Seams like most of the spyders had none or a tube style. Rag's |

I have a new transducer still in the box too :D . Garmen brand...$45.00 and they have plenty of them, good thing. I've been try'n to think of a way to mout it so it'll stay on. Every time I see a go fast boat on a trailer I look at the azz end to see if they have a trans...not many do and now I know why.
If you're serious about selling your boat let me know how much you're looking for and I'll pass it on. Actually it's my younger brother who's asked me to sell mine to him. He really likes my Nova. Says it's small enough to trailer but still big enough for our local lakes...he's right.
Like I said, only if 89Donzi isn't interested. I won't step on 89's toes.

Rags - When you're looking at yours, you're looking at mine. No chit, mirror image. I'd love to post a pic of mine for you but I'm not a "contributing" member. Mine has purple, yellow, teal and black lightning graphics with an integrated checker on it. Looks pretty cool. Not brag'n, that's just the way I bought it
I'll buy something from speedwakeinfo in the next couple of days and then I can post a pic. I like the site and think I should contribute anyways. |

Great!! You know what my Nova looks like, flag us down. We're on the lake every Sunday and lots of Saturdays and some evenings too, when the weather is decent. I've also been known to cut out of work a little early during the week for a quick romp :)
Would you be using your 38 Scarab on Oneida when you find one?? Don't see allot of 38s out there. |

LOL. We've been on Oneida Lake for 7 to 8 years now, with 3 different boats. So far only one small ding on one blade. I always kept to the main channels. But also watched where boats bigger and heavier than ours were going. Majority of the shoals are marked so it's not as bad as you might think. We're all over the lake now but we're still careful.
Besides, the shoals help keep Chris M of Stern Drive Spec. in business :D |

Hey there Kidnova,
I am new to this site, so forgive me if I ask questions that should be obvious. How is your 23 nova running now that you moved up to the 500HP? I am in the process of doing the same with my 1993 23 Nova. I was hitting 70 mph with the stock 502 EFI, & a 25 pitch Mirage prop @ 5200 rpm's, I am hoping for mid to high 70's with 500 horse power and going to try the brovo 1 4 blade 26 pitch prop.
Would love to hear more about your boat and where you ride at.
