Shane B would like to know who wears life jackets and Kill Switches?
jb
too many choices
shane b
That is alot of choices but I was just curious who weres what and when I always were a kill switch and wear a life jacket most of the time
dyd
I would wear the life jacket and kill switch if racing, or in sea conditions that were bad enough.

#1. I dont race, cause I know that I would loose :D :D

#2. I dont go out if the weather is crappy.
avho
I'll only wear my jacket if I'm out skiing. Otherwise, I'm not ever wearing one.
JimG
Almost never...

But in my defense: the top speed of my boats are a blazing 20mph and 55mph! I do wear a kill switch when I'm by myself in the Donzi...
rerun
I always wear one when riding on a offshore style boat. Somthing that I just started doing last year but it's never to late to start a good habit like this. I always refer back to a local sheriff that told a friend once that in all the years he's worked the marine patrol he's never pulled a body out of the water wearing a life jacket.
trimman
My kids all wear the jackets they are all uner the age of 12, and w/ the sunsation i always wear the kill switch!! My 88 liberator did not have a kill switch and i was w/ the whole fam damly and hit a huge wake off a 34' cruiser and we went sailing i was thrown from the helm while the boat was hauling *** towards a pier we were doing about 50, luckly i got up intime and was able to slow down turn the boat but that could of been ugly. I always wear the switch!!!
ducHunter
Sorry about all the choices but you get what you get somtimes :D :D :D

I guess the best thing to do allways wear a life jacket
mike
My daughter is 13 and still put's a jacket on without even being told. Who can tell me about a good comfortable life jacket that can be worn when sitting in a bolster seat for along time. I'm about 245lb and 6'4" so it can be a press fit with a ski vest on.
Offroadtoys
I wear both when conditions merit them, but neither when just easing around with family in boat.
My son always puts his on when we get close to the dock from the land and doesn't take it off till he is back on land, Habbits formed young can stay with you.
shane b
I can't belive how many people don't were life jackets and kill switches this is your life your talking about
MildThunder
i wear a life jacket in the water but not on the boat.
and use the kill switch if im going to run hard ..going to look at inflatable jackets at the indy boat show coming up
L8Shift
While underway or in the water all children have life jackets on that "fit"...
That means various kids sizes...and adult sizes for the kids too, we never know who will bring who...
Also a chaperone for the kids must be on board as well... I'll have one on if the water gets to rough or the weather gets really bad...kill switch too..

Somewhere I read some good common sense rules on when to wear a PFD/KS.....1: If your running over 45mph. 2: If water temps are below 65 degrees F. 3: If your alone in the boat. 4: If your boat is less than 20ft, all children are required by PA State Law. 5: If water conditions make you question...Why am I out here? 6:If your running in limited visability or at night. 7: It will keep you warm on those cool nights. 8: Oh yeah....If you can't swim. 9: If you spent $300-$400, might as well wear it out before it rots up. 10: If you have a real cool racing boat because then you'll look real cool also.....Mike.

I did the same think, now the wife tells me to put on the kill swith.

I d like to find a nice life jacket that doesnt cost a mint and fits right Im 240 lbs and 6'5"
Splashdown
Can't imagine ever boating without wearing a life jacket, it would be like driving the car with no belt on !!
Grand Theft
I normally won't wear anything! But if I ever upped my speed or ran in the 60's in rough water for a long period of time you know I would suggest wearing something to my crew, before I throw their asses out, make no mystake that when I drive fast and on the edge I am paying attention to one thing, keeping it prop side down, not keeping everyone else in the boat...
Donzi26ZX
We always wear both (Lifeline), with the exception of long no wake zones.
I will say this, no matter how good you swim, it is hard to do unconsious, and odds are if there is a mishap, you will be.
They won't have to look long to find us, dead or alive.

cajun
NOT IN THE SAME LEAGUE WITH MOST OF YOU GUYS, DON'T EVEN HAVE A KILL SWITCH
Hot'n'Bothered
Im with cajun, my formula doesn't even have a kill switch. I will be installing them this spring however.

MY BOAT LOST ITS STEERING AT 92MPH LAST YEAR, AS A RESULT I WAS EJECTED FROM THE BOAT. KNOCKED UNCONSCIOUS, TWO BROKEN RIBS, ONE SHATTERED RIB, AND A CRACKED FEMUR LATER. I LOOK BACK AND COUNT MY LUCKY STARS THAT I DID NOT DROWN. NOT WEARING MY KILL SWITCH OR PFD. THE BOAT HULL WAS DESTROYED AFTER HITTING LAND AND JUMPING 87FT. THE PUAL PFAFF 540 BLOWN MTR OVERHEATED, CRACKED THE HEADS, ATE THE SEA WATER PUMP, AND THE LOWER UNIT EVAPORATED INTO THIN AIR. INCLUDING THE BRAND NEW LAB FINISHED BRAVO 30P.
REAL LIFE CHANGING EXPERIENCE. STILL GO FAST, JUST A LOT SMARTER ABOUT IT NOW.
THANKS YOUR LUCKY STARS EVERYDAY!
just right
our 4 year is always in a life jacket, even on the dock.my wife will wear one if it is very rough.i never wear one.we have 40 footer and cruise around 40. :D
JW
I wear a life vest only when racing or planning on driving over 60 mph. On my small lakes, driving under 60 is safe, but over 60 when the boat 'pops' up out of the water and is running on the pad, a jacket is the smart choice.

Since I do not use a foot throttle with a strong return spring, I wear the kill cord always..........
victor
I am 6 ft tall 175 lbs wet ! I wear a life jacket , with a tight T- shirt pulled over top ! Helps get dates ? :D
mrs pennylover
We usually cruise at 50 to 55 mph. We always wear jackets (we bought the automatic sospenders, alot more comfortable) Chip always has the kill switch on too. we've already told friends that whoever wants a ride has to wear a jacket. If they don't want to they don't go with us.
Aggressor Tom
Kill switch always, jackets on when running hard and not treating the boat like a cruiser, without the kids. The kids have their life jackets on before they even step out of the truck at the ramp. I had one bad incident with my 5 year old, let him sit in the back of my Hydrostream while I backed it in. Kept my eye on him the whole time while backing up and he stayed in the seat. The time it took me to turn around and open the truck door and look back he was over the side with no jacket. Less than 4 feet of water, but over his head. Had to pluck him out, he actually came up laughing about it, no fear. So take no chances.
jusbeenbad
I wear a life jacket and make others wear one if seas are big and choppy, kill switch is worn as well when I am running hard and out of the water more than in the water. But to be honest, not nearly as often as I should.

Gulp! I would like to change my vote from never to always.

I always wear the killswitch when running alone and out of the no wake zones. Lifejacket is worn very rarely.

This may sound silly, but 2 years ago on lake huron we got caught in a terrible storm 20 miles away from our destination. we had our jackets on and our friends thought we were silly. they stuffed there 32 " baga , blew the windshield out, cut the girl up pretty bad, she freaked, but other than quite abit of damage too there boat they were real lucky. from that day on we don't go out without them on. these boats are getting pretty fast and if we make a mistake or start racing another boat it's too late to put them on then. I truly believe performance boaters are the safest boaters out there, but we're in totally different league than most. We need to take all the precautions we can. Go fast but be careful. happy boating. j.v.
Team Jefe
I hardly ever wear a jacket. I do have the kill switch on while alone, in big seas, or running fast.
Zen_Nemo
I keep enough on board so I don't get a ticket. Wearing them usually means that they are on like Diapers while we float.....

then again, when i'm in a storm......... or one is moving in. Everyone puts one on....
H20skibumn
My jacket is always within arms reach, I never race with more than 2 people in the boat. If I race I put the kill switch on my jacket and the jacket on me. Also have a too hard of a hotfoot. Gets to be a pain in the foot sometimes. And my 3 yr old always wears a jacket with a crotch strap.

to Shane B your question on jackets and helmets our policy is when using our power boat is to use jackets and helmets and kill switches we do a lot of water skiing both social and racing on rivers and lakes and some limited off shore events For actual racing it is compulsory for boat crews we find that most drivers like the thrill of speed on water and in recent years poker runs larger boats and high speed are part of what our sport is about The one danger all power boats face is the unknown of hidden objects just below the surface of the water which can have an impact to both boat and occupants in open water the thrill of air under the boat is great however even this can go wrong. unfortunately most life jackets are large and bulky certainly not a fashion statement or cool to some it comes down to a personal choice I find I can still have fun and enjoy my boating still a good question and I'm sure a good topic for the forum
crystalship
Alway's wear the kill cord
Boat Racer
My vote was " when racing other boats", but I TOO WEAR THE KILL SWITCH!!!

1/3 of votes state never wear lifejacket? I didn't think that many do not. I will wear mine when running hard/rough and kill switch as well. Easy cruising I don't.
Donzi33ZX
Always on... this time even in no wake!
I will add, that ocean run (HRPA Poker Run) was the biggest water I had been in, ever, minus an aircraft carrier the last 24 years!
Like I tell my teen, we might be dead but it will be easy on the search party.
I don't want to be part of the "we should-da or would-da" crowd when disaster strikes. Hard to live with.
LIFELINES!

1st mate (wife, forward bomar) smoking a cig waiting on the damn chip we just earned. What a good woman!

JUSTBEENBAD, did you wear a jacket on our poker run?
Donzi33ZX
another shot, same run as I mentioned above, I got my 16x20 today from Randy! AWESOME work.

I've been thrown out of a flat bottom at over 140mph, I had a helmet and jacket and other safety gear on. It probably saved my life! Did not have kill switches at the time but the boat had a foot throttle so the engine went back to idle. Unfortunately the boat had already rotated around the crankshaft a couple of times and disintegrated.

I always use the kill switch now. Kids under 18 have no choice, they do not even get on the dock without a vest, this includes mine and they are all certified divers. Adults that are not proficient swimmers or have been drinking must wear a vest. I wear mine if there is any chance of the boat coming out of the water or when water conditions are poor.

Any high speed runs are made without children onboard. If an adult has been drinking he stays on the dock during speed runs. Any adult that rides on the boat during a speed run has a vest on and is made fully aware of the danger and responsibilities involved.

I have been called a hard-as$ and a dictator but it is my boat and I am responsible for the safety of all onboard. I make the rules, if you do not like them, we will wave at you as you sit on the dock.
sunsation98
the new boat doesnt have a kill switch..i dont think, anyways but plenty of life jackets!
Swamplizard
only if the weather is getting ugly...boat's not fast so non issue. When we go way off shore we wear them as well.
Andretti 502
JAM here,
I wear TWO lifejackets when I ride with Kidnova. :yak: :winker: :winker:
West Marine has a cool jacket that is also a life jacket. It's fine for night or cooler riding I would wear it all the time. But during 85*-90* weather...guilty I don't wear one. My kids do. Even the older ones wear when we are cruisin across the lake, but if we are just going up the canal those of age not required to wear one don't.

just me p22
Girlfriend and i go around and around about that damn life jacket........i told her she can wear it when i drive
El Guapo
I wear a vest when I play with the water toy's. I keep 10 on the boat for all the other people. My kids wear them all the time. The rule is kids have to be wearing them if they are under 12 years old, but I will still make them when they are older than that.
DonMan
I wear kill switch always.

I only wear lifejacket during poker runs and at night or if water conditions are very rough (storm blowing in, etc...).
