anyone know anything about Jinma Tractors - chinese made - you can import them in kit form and put them together yourselves. I've read a lot of good things about them on the tractorbynet forum.
basically I need a small tractor with turf tires to cut the grass at the new place and to move the boat around since my 21' long dually is going to make it a real pain to get the boat in and out of the driveway. The builder is flaring the driveway big time but the tractor would make it a lot easier to move it to and from the street without running over the grass.
or any other compact tractors you think will do the job - the tongue weight on my trailer is about 800 lbs and I want a belly mower
any ideas/thoughts - first hand experience?
it seems to me from my research that an 18 to 25 hp diesel compact tractor will do the job for me and I really don't want anything larger for lots of practical reasons. |

I can tell you that tractorbynet is an awesome site. It would be nice to have a boat site like that (hint hint). BY that I mean that I used the "buying and pricing" section a ton when I bought ours. It kicked booty. I also used corvetteforum for pricing when buying our z06 so I could get a local dealer down to pricing I could get elsewhere (one semi-local dealer sells all Vettes at sticker, must be nice to be in that biz) But with boats, try to get pricing and you get squat.
I bought a JD2210. I love it,but I bought a Cub Z Force ZTR for mowing. Nothing's faster than a ZTR.
Now, the JD2210 I like because it's small enough to manuever, but still is diesel and 4x4 for the winters (just plowed the drive last night for the first time, works well for that). The only issue I had was I bought a drawbar for the 3 point and the holes were not big enough for a 2 5/16 ball. So, a friend will CNC it larger for me and I'll be good to go. It will lift and move the boat though.
BTW, I was originally going to buy a Kubota BX series, but the similar HP Kubota was MORE $$ than the JD, at least through our local dealers. I went to a LARGE JD dealer that moves a lot of tractors. Great service also. I had read that tractors are pricier in places on the east coast.
Resale at least on JD and Kub will be excellent. Just look at used, might as well buy new.
So how is the new place coming along? |

I did a lot of research before buying my last tractor.
I don't think there's a tractor under 80-100 hp that's made in the US any more. That includes the green ones. Everyone makes tractors for everyone else and puts their own color and name on them now. Example is Deere. JD was buying tractors from Zetor, painting them green and slapping the John Deere sticker on them. Then shipping them to Canada and selling them for about 50% more than what they are worth. There are some in the US as well.
I looked at Chinese made tractors. They are absolute JUNK. Believe me when I say that. An example is a line that I've seen around here for sale called McConell. Sounds like US but they are made in China and are pure JUNK. And parts?? Very hard to come by.
Deere, Massey, Ford {New Holland}, Kubota, all good tractors but pricey.
I ended up buying a tractor manufactured by Long Agribusiness. Used to be called just "Long". Semi off brand but the company has been in business for many years. It has a 53 hp Mitsubishi {spelling?} diesel 4x4 with a loader. 16 speeds forward and reverse and lots of nice features. $23K brand spank'n new in Oct. '01. Deere, Massey, and Fords were about $6-8K more. And they had no more features than the Long. And...they all come from the same place, Taiwan. |

Last I knew they were being assembled in Augusta.
As with most Deere tractors, the components are made world wide nowdays. |

Here in Waterloo we have 5 locations, the JD Foundry, the Components Works, the Engine Works, the Product Engineering Center, and the Tractor Works where the 7000, 8000, 9000 series are built.
Even some of these components are farmed out. :( |

World economy...kind of sad in a way :(
A good thing though is they have engineers in the various countries to monitor quality control.
Same deal for most power tool companies like Delta and some others. Most are made overseas with company reps watching quality control. |

Just a suggestion, I love over paying!!! I have Friends that will not go to them for the same reason. They just tried to charge my buddy almost 400.00 to repair his chain saw. I thought he was going to go postal on them. They have treated me fine and when I bought my JD they beat local JD area prices. I am not talking the Home Depot brand JD either. |

I know you are trying to help and yes they are a good dealer, but they sell at THEIR price and do not negotiate...
I am not looking to buy new anyway because there are plenty of good used tractors around that'll accomplish what I need a tractor to do for 1/3 of the new price.
we still have our riding mower with 48" deck as a backup.
this looks like a nice unit and it's about $4,500 less than a similar Deere.

Jeff,
I looked for a good used 4x4 tractor on and off for a year before I decided to go for a new one. I was looking for one with a loader, that looked good, less than 2000 hours, and wasn't beat to crap. No luck! Every one I looked at they wanted about 2/3 to 3/4 the price of new. I had two used tractors that I had sold already, and was not going to get into another used POS.
If you REALLY NEED a tractor, get a new one or maybe a demo {used at farm shows etc.} if you can locate one. There is an endless array of uses and implements you can get for a 3 pt. hitch tractor; post hole diggers, roto tillers, drag behind land scape equipment...all very handy and good/fun to have.
Believe me, if you end up with a POS you will be sorry. Expensive to fix, down time, and it takes all the fun out of owning it.
Also, like a boat engine, if you think you need 25hp, get 35hp. You'll be glad you did.
Get what you like but get quality...Deere, Massey, Ford, etc. If you're not farming with it you'll never wear it out. Personally, I like the Long that I have. I got a decent price on it and there are dealers close by. Brand really doesn't matter much as long as there's a dealer of shop around that can take care of it if need be. Just don't buy Chinese junk.

local dealer is a ford dealer and has a few nice used Fords in stock... stopped by there today... Plus I'm a Ford Man anyway :)
They also had two Massey's
I highly doubt I'll wind up with a Deere - just don't like the green unless I can find a 2000 series at a decent price. I just cannot afford to spend $14,000 on a new 2000 Series Deere - plain and simple. |
|
|
| Kidnova |
Deere has a good product but I think they're a bit over priced. You won't be working a tractor like a farmer would so like I said it will probably last you forever, or at least until you want more.
Ford, Massey...what ever you can get a decent deal on. Just get a little more hp than what you think you need. And I'd definitely suggest 4x4. They are extremely useful, and fun. I plow about 900 feet of driveway. PA blade on front, 7 foot snow blower on the rear. And cut around 3 acres of grass with a 7 ft. finish mower. Plus have attended farm auctions and have picked up plows, disks, drags, cultivator, roto tiller, back blade. Big garden :D . Critters eat the bulk of it, but fun to do.
Good luck. |
|
|
| gilla |
| Verify the quality of the cut on the finish mower belly mount that is available for each tractor. Not carefull the neighbors will think you own an Apache, not an OL, because of your scapled yard. |

Anyhoo... don't be scared of used tractors, even "vintage". I've had several, including a cherry 1955 Ford 850. Would pull a frickin' house!
This one is a 1966 Massey Ferguson MF150 HighCrop Diesel. Serious workhorse, starts everytime in any weather, paid 3k for it. Use it almost every day. |

there's a lot of used local gear since there are so many local farms.
there's a decent looking Case IH for sale with turf tires and a 60" mower deck at a dealer 3 miles from me.
first one for $6,200 - these guys are real negotiable
ps: tractors are more expensive up here than in texas. there are a ton of tractors and dealers in texas on ebay.
