question about the so called "beak"               >>> CLICK HERE FOR THE ORIGINAL THREAD <<<
sunsation98
Ok for startes, just so I dont upset anyone-this is my opinion.

I had a discussion today with a fella about a fountain.
he tried to tell me the fountain is at least x amount of feet shorter than any other boat in its size range.

I told him I thought he was nuts! He said that the 27 is no bigger than my sunsation was. Again I told him I thought he was nuts. He said there is four feet of beak here to argu about. I just laughed. we both looked at pictures and he didt have real answer as to why he was saying what he did. I showed him pics of two boats-mine and shamless. I tried to show him the angle of the bow rise is not much different than a normal boat except the last 12-16" of radius giving the boat maybe a total 0f 8-10 extra inches! I asked if he just wanted to argue because he didnt like the boat because it was faster than his-he owned a 260 powerquest, which I am definitly not knocking.

but is it just fun to joke or do people really think a 27 foot boat is as small as they like to say? or any other boat for that matter?

what are your guys thoughts!
sunsation98
is this a 27+/- footer now?
Shameless
Ken, I actually measured what you are talking about...at the MOST...it gives 6 inches. No offense toy your X-boat ken, but for someone to say my boat is the same as a 23'8" boat is on crack~~~ :D

sorry about the bouble post...here I am in a 20 foot slip, granted, If I would have moved the boat back 2 more feet, my transom would have hit...
NYPachanga22
I think the guy may have had a better argument if he argued the other end. I would think that the integrated platform on the fountain would be the area to focus on for subtracting to make them more even. But even then I think you are talking 25.5 ft to 24ft? Shameless how long is the platform on your boat? Is it even 1.5 feet?
pasquesi
And I STILL love that all white 27. I don't give a flying donut what you measure......I love that boat. Sun, tell your friend to get a life.. :laugher: :laugher: :laugher:
Shameless
my platform is VERY small, have not measured it, but no more then a foot. I have to hold on if I try to sit on the platform, not enough depth.
Shameless
look at my wifes foot, she wears a size 6 in womens and it takes up much of the platform...
Shameless
BUT,

I have a HUGE notched transom, so that takes a bit away from the running surface.

definitly not a friend! just a guy!

Love the BEAK for dropping someone off at the dock to get the trailer. Overall length is what it is-running surface is another measurement on all boats.

an 8 1/2 foot wide cat might have a 4 foot tunnel that doesn't touch the water, so why aren't they called only 4 1/2 foot wide boats?
32storm
Big deal, so Fountain includes the beak & the platform in their length. you probably only lose 6"-12" at the bow & 15"-18" at the transom. Does that make a 27' Fountain a 25' boat.? It would depend on what 25' you compared it to, or what 27', etc.

The current 35' Fountain started as a 10 meter with the squared off transom. It grew to 35' when Fountain mold in the integral swim platform.

Hustler did the same thing. The 32 has a squared off transom and is 32' long. The 344 that replaced it has integral swim platform design, and is 34' long.

I just measured the beak on mine. It is more like 1 1/2' of .....whatever you want to call it, lost usable lenght. But in all honesty, we actually loose more than that because the bow is not as stub nose as most others such as Cigs and Formulas. A shallower angle.
A buddy had a 303 Formula and he had a good 3 feet more space in the cabin than my 32 Fever. The rest of the boats were comparable in lengths. He now has a 35 Cafe. I swear it is 10' longer. :p:

remove the mirror in the nose, there's a whole lotta space up there. :)
" El Presidante"
I think a few other factors that contribute to the size misconseption with Fountains is the overall "sleekness". My past boat was a 29 Baja Outlaw. For a 29 this boat was very large. Big Cabin with a bunch of head room (high deck). A few times I even had four adults in the cabin sitting comfortably. Also it was measured from transom to bow tip. My current boat, a 29 Fever, is very small compared to the Baja. The cabin has just enough head room for me to sit comfortably, barely any leg room, and of course the cockpit area is a bit smaller. Realistically, I would bet that the cabin in a 25 Outlaw is even larger. Fountains are made to go fast with minimal comfort. I'm sure overnighting wasn't high on Reggies priorety list. As far as performance goes......my single fever is just as fast as the 29 with twins.

Your boat must be drastically different. I follow the keel all the way and keep going where the beak starts its curve, there is no way it is a foot and a half on mine, just 6 inches... :)

Ditto.

If the owner really likes his/her own boat then that is all that matters.

If someone brings up that with me I know the rest of the conversation will be idiotic so I just smile crosseyed and go talk to someone else or walk away or etc.etc. Exception: if a close friend or family member and we are just jousting.

So without the "Beak" and swim platform, your Fountain is 25.5??

;) :laugher: :laugher:

Anchor locker-don't forget the anchor locker behind the mirror. Since we anchor a lot, that is one item I was looking for. Clean, neat, has a drain and easy to use.

I guess you can price a boat by cost per foot or by cost per mph, which is my preference.
obnoxus
They all do it,,,,case in point,,,,in 1990 Baja had a 250,,,in 91,,,,the counted the platform and the SAME boat was now there 270 !!!!!

Like they say,,,, if you want a nice riding 38 footer,,,,buy a 42 Fountain !!!!!!!

Compare running surfaces to compare the length of the boats. I never measured my Aggressor, but I did measure a 27 Fountain and from the tangent where the bow starts to curl up to the end of the bottom at the rear end of the boat at the notched transom is 17'2". So there is almost 10 feet of swim platform, notched transom, bow, and beak. Not saying its bad, but I am curious of comparing it to other boats.

Yeah, yeah,,,

Do that to most of the boats and you will find at leat the same reults, some worse!!!!!!!

Spend some time and look through Magazines and look at the approach angles and you will find there are many the same or worse then the beak...that is if you care to acknowlede it...
Rattlesnake Jake
Last year there was a 1989 272 Formula in the slip next to my 2000/271 Fastech. Was at least 2 ft longer. :(
sunsation98
here nor there-I think I had a valid argument, and shed some light on an ignorant man!

I just cant stand people whe just feel thier stuff is better than everyone elses.......I think he just started bashing, because his boat was not as fast-I told him there are peos and cons to everything you buy...........thats just life
Shameless
So true ken, all depends on what you want...or how fast you want to go, ect... I do not have alot of head room in my cuddy, so not an overnight boat, but the cockpit is big and a great day cruiser, which is what I wanted plus the handleing is amazing... :D
gilla
Along with an anchor locker and goos swim platform with built in ladder, I picked the Fountain for the cockpit space which is what you use most. at 6'3" and 270, I can't squeeze into a lot of seats and be comfortable-plus the great room between the seats. Unfortunately the new 38 with the full stager engines lost some room between the front and rear seats and also a little in the length of the cabin bench seats.

That's what I am guessing, too. I know the actual length from bow to stearn is less than 30 feet on my 32 ft boat. Some boats may not have a beak, but may call a boat 32' 2" a 33 foot boat. Its all perception, the actual room in the boat and how it rides is what really counts.

Yeah :laugher: Gilla gives me chit about my past measureing :laugher: but I want to know how boat manufatures learned to measure!!!! :laugher: :laugher: As long as we like what we have and do not knock what others have, it is all good!!! ENJOY the water!!!! :D

Tom, this was not directed at you though it seemd like it, I meant it as a general comment... :)

sorry... ;)

When I bought my boat I looked for cockpit depth for kids and size for all. Size wise my boat has the same size cockpit as a 26' cruiser. No where near the room in the cabin but we don't overnight.

You're a big boy Gilla, I wouldn't think you would be comfortable in a Fountain.

Haven't been in anything bigger yet. seat 6 and stand 5 for 11 total. A least as big as your 42 cockpit.

One of the reasons I bought the 38 fever was because of the extra cockpit room it had over my 35. I wish they matched the old 38 Fever deck with the new hull. That layout has quite a bit more room than any of the lightnings.
