| I normally don't burn that much anyway. Our hot spot is a 15/20 minute run and we sit there all day and hang out then run back to night hang out 20 minutes away and do it all over again the next. My Outlaw will burn more gas than my 15 ft bass boat did last year. :D |

I'm hoping more people will boat less, cut down on traffic, so I can boat more.
Actual running hrs aren't alot anyway. Run hard to hang out place. Spend most of day. Run hard home.
I come no where close to the hrs most of you guys run, so things don't change much if I run more or less. Other than happiness or depression. :laugher: :laugher: |

Boaters weathering gas prices
No deterrent, 'They've got a big investment'
BY JON NEWBERRY | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER
Gasoline prices are up on land, and they're even higher at sea.
But Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky boaters aren't about to let a little added expense spoil their summer fun.
Boat dealer Ron Cummins, co-owner of Hern Marine, was enjoying his boat at the Jimmy Buffett concert Thursday night at Riverbend Music Center in Anderson Township. Surrounded by more than 200 other boats, by his estimate, some from as far away as Portsmouth and Louisville, he saw no evidence that high gas prices have dampened boaters' determination to get out on the water.
"There's no impact. They came from everywhere," Cummins said.
"The only thing that's impacting use of boats is the weather," he said. "I can handle $3 a gallon in gas. You give me 80- or 90-degree weather, that's all I need."
With the fuel tank capacity of a typical mid-range boat (22 feet to 27 feet in length) averaging about 60 gallons, at $3.50 for a gallon of gas, a full tank can cost $200.
Assuming gasoline prices on the water have risen about the same percentage as those on land over the past year - 36 percent, according to the latest U.S. Energy Department data - a boater could easily be spending an extra $60 or $70 or so to fill up compared to last June.
So far, though, it hasn't seemed to change people's boating habits much. Part of the reason could be that gas prices are actually a bit lower after peaking last fall.
"Gas prices are still up there, and people are still buying," said Fred Crawford.
Crawford owns Aquaramp Harbor & Marina on the Ohio River in Fort Thomas.
At that dock, 89-octane gas was selling Friday for $3.30 a gallon. His gas sales are off a little compared to last year because people aren't staying out as long as they have in the past. But they haven't stopped boating, he said.
"They've got a big investment. They're not going to let the price of gas hinder them," he said.
Directly across the river at Four Seasons Marina, boat owner Ron Girouard of West Price Hill is part of a group of boaters who travel down to Belterra Casino near Vevay, Ind., for the Fourth of July. This year, however, some of them are thinking of not going because of high fuel costs. Instead, they might go to Grand Victoria Casino in Rising Sun, which is half the distance, he said.
The 130-mile round trip to Belterra would cost about $600 in his 35-foot SeaRay, Girouard said.
Fellow boater Steve Lee of Beavercreek, Ohio, said his boat, a "big Silverton convertible," would need 600 gallons to make the same trip.
"The style of the boat and the shape of the hull makes a big difference," Lee said, looking toward the far end of the dock where large houseboats were tied up. "Some of those 'hotels' down there, they're expensive to move."
GALLONS PER HOUR
Boaters measure fuel use in gallons per hour rather than gallons per mile. As with cars, though, mileage varies a lot depending on speed.
Consumption for a mid-sized boat with a V-6 engine is generally about 7 gallons to 8 gallons per hour, Cummins said. But even someone who's boating all day probably isn't going to consume anywhere near 100 gallons of fuel.
"A person may be out on the water from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., but if you look at the hour meter, you'll only see five hours," Cummins said. "People find a cove, throw the anchor down and break out lunch, then play in the water for seven or eight hours."
Four Seasons harbormaster Denny Schalk said the bigger boats might be staying tied up more as a response to high gas prices, but smaller boats are still getting out.
"The swimming pool should be used a lot more," he said.
GRIPES NOTHING NEW
Terri Behringer of Pleasant Ridge, another Four Seasons boater who lives in one of those "hotels" most of the summer, said her 50-foot Gibson houseboat probably won't get out as much this summer. Her 13-foot Whaler runabout will be getting plenty of action, though, as it has in past seasons. "It's a lot of fun," she said.
Schalk said business at his fuel dock hasn't been noticeably affected so far this year. Slip rentals are "off a little bit, maybe 1 percent or so," with a handful of its 500 slips still available.
Four Seasons was charging $3.50 a gallon for gas and $3.25 for diesel Friday morning. Fuel dock manager Jerry O'Brien said it's been business as usual, including gripes about high prices.
"Oh, they're always complaining. They did that last year. That's nothing new," he said.
Schalk observed that most boaters consume a lot less gas than they do beer, which at $7 a 12-pack is still almost twice as expensive per gallon even at fuel-dock prices.

  In Theory I'd like to think that I'll drive less at WOT cause my ride won't go past 50 mph on a good day. Years ago I could hit the local beach bars every weekend in summer for 10 to 15 bucks in gas in my 19' Raven . Now it's at least $75 for the same ride. I won't sit at the Manina cause of the $$$$$. Will still run 100 hrs. this season on the Regal. Really getting -p---off at being ripped off by everyone involved including the oil barons right down to my marina who gets $3.65 for premium.

been pretty nice on the weekends her in CNY. The flood crap on the souther tier took a toll, but it never hit us here....at least in my town.
As far as fuel costs and boating...I still run the same as usual. I just put in $150 at a time instaead of filling it up every time like before. I don't burn any less, but it just feels better on the wallet. Sooner or later I will only have a 1/4 tank and will have to put the $400 in  :D |

well so far this summer I have not broken 200 dollars in fuel...............and we have a considerable amount of hours on her.

I wish I had more time to be out on the boat. The cost of fuel is far less expensive than the things I'm doing to the house!
Still working on getting the homestead back to pre Isabel condition. This is taking a lot longer than I hoped it would!
2006 is the first year we had a lawn again, amazing what 20 yards of top soil and good grass seed will do!
Doing mostly outside things that were way down on the list of projects.
Landscaping and low voltage lighting are the current project de jour! |

The cost of gas has in fact stopped me from boating a few times this year.
On a typical local boating weekend I burn 100 gallons (80 gallons in the boat, and 20 gallons in the truck). So combined with ramp and mooring fees, a weekend has gone from $120 to $400 over the past couple of years. I notice that. I fly to Hawaii for the weekend for $400, that's hard to beat.
The biggest reason my hours are down this year is not fuel cost, its other parts of life: mostly, my middle daughter is off to university next year so we have had lots of end of high school, beginning of university activities. Also, she is doing her LAST daddy subsidized year of equestrian events, so that is a lot of events.
END OF SUMMER means NO MORE EQUESTRIAN BILLS!!!! Yea!!!!!
University tuition is nothing if you are used to horses and boats.
So, a new boat may be on the way! Or, some upgrades to my present boat.
In either case, I expect to have diesels by next summer. |

Statistically, during 2005, there was a net reduction of sailboats registered throughout the US with gains in all other categories of watercraft. The greatest increase was that of outboard powered boats.
I'm just a wealth of useless knowledge! |

statistic possibly due to the less time one has for sailing and would like to venture further with less time???
Or just that many people being bored with sailing??? |

I think it is the simple fact that they are as tight as two coats of paint with their money!
Even though many of them only have 3 1/2 HP outboard motors to get them out into the wind, at $3.00 a gallon they feel $9 per year in fuel cost is far too much and they just threw in the towel. |
|

| I thought I spent alot on fuel last year, well I've spent that so far this year and am planning on spending even more. I only cut back during the dog days because I am busier at work but now I work 4-12's and am off more so I am boating/fishing more. I go boating to reboot my brain and I do not plan to boat less!!! Last year we used the boat a minimum of 4 days per week and now that I have taken the buy out from one of the big three, we plan on being out even more!!!
I just hope there are fewer morons out there that should not have a boat in the first place!!! No common courtesy or common sense!!! Heck some should not even drive a car!!!
I wish the USCG insisted on a license for all boaters, from PWC's to full blown weekend warrior offshore types and everything in between. Certification should go up exponentially as the size and speed increases.
Just my opinion..........................F AST C HANCE!!!! |

Sorry to tell you this but your way doesn't work. You can pass laws against anything and everything but the only ones who will pay attention to them is the law abiding citizen. It must be done with enforcement of the rules already in place. Without enforcement the laws mean nothing. ie. "I've been doin it this way for years, nobody has ever said anything to me."
This applies to more than just boating. |

I have not had my boat on the water in 5 weeks now...and it's not because of fuel prices. At this rate my fuel consumption for the season is way low...lower than ever. I have spent exactly $275 on fuel all season so far

heck no i wont boat less...i have boated much more this year then i did last year since i bought the powerquest in june '07. matter of fact, ive probably burnt up more fuel already trying to check my top speed.
our local hot spot (hot hole) is only a 4-5 minute run after u hit lake erie. 10 minutes down to sterling state park to anchor off in cool water if it's super hot & humid.
i am selling my '06 6" lifted chevy (gas) 2500hd though if anyone's interested...i guess i am compensating for fuel but atleast im still boating!! |

| I would say I boated less in the respect we did a few really sort trips and more hanging out. But, by the end of summer I was ready to run all over the lake and we burned more gas from labor day weekend until now than June, July, or August. |
