| I took the motor out last night. It has a little over 700 hours on it so I figured its time to freshen it up a little bit before something bad happens. |

OH YEAH
But not a real lot. I really need it to remain reliable and turn key. I do not want to be messing with it or worrying about it. I am planning on some port work on the heads, cam and intake. I want to hopefully bump the horse power from 415 to around 550. So we will see |

Are they a known problem on these engines..? I would of never even thought of replacing that.
Any idea as to where to get one..?
Let me know
Thanks |

| For as much as a PITA as they are to change with the engine in the boat...? |

If it is not worn I would not think about replacing it.
Just make sure that You align the engine to the gimbals when the engine goes back in.
I don't change my couplings untill they show sign of going bad and I am running stock ones with 650 HP.
You could put new ones on and blow them the first time you go out if they are not aligned properly.
Spend the money on a new roller cam. |

Very true. Then either way with a new or the old one, the motor is coming back out. That falls under the installation job. Has to be done right. I'm just going on the 700 hr thing. Not to say it wasn't replaced by the previous owner. Just gotta look at it to know.
BTW, if it is bad, any Merc dealer will have them for around $350 |

| Thanks for the info guys. I will check it out and maybe bring it to the local Mercruiser parts dept and see what they think. Hopefully they will be able to tell me if it needs to be replaced or not. |

| I took a valve cover off and was checking out the heads.. how do they look for having 700 hours. I know that you cant tell much from the top but until I get time to rip the rest of it down I thought this would be cool to check out. I have never seen the words HI PERF in a cylinder head before.? Its just a stock 502, that has never been out of the boat before. They must of came this way..? |

| This is what has been keeping me warm in my shop. Its not insulated at all so I am trying out this new radiant heater called VAL6 it runs on Diesel Fuel or Kerosene. Let me tell you this thing gets extremely hot!! 300,000 BTU's |

| Just make damn sure that NOTHING dark is anywhere in front of that heater or you just might loose the garage and all of your toys. |

Are you familliar with these heaters..? It has not really been very cold yet so I have not really had a good chance to try it out. But in the little bit that I have used it, its pretty impressive |

I saw around 4900-5000 rpm. I do not know if that has something to do with the prop or what. This motor runs like new but like I said better to do a little preventative maintenance now then wait until it comes unglued. |

Look at the condition of the spline teeth. Personally, if it's in the budget, and never been replaced, I'd seroiusly consider replacing it while you've got it out. |

| Worn splines will look and feel sharp and pointy. A new/good coupler's splines are flat on the tips. |
