Anyone else want to do it?
http://www.nosa.org/
Sure, its named "Newport Ocean Sailing Association" but I asked, and they said they could potentially support a "class" of powerboats, its no problem to organize a dozen or more boats:
"please make sure that your fleet has the proper insurance and are covered like the fleets that are invited in the NOSA Notice of Race."
For us, it could work kinda like this:
Thursday Night: party at any of the many yacht clubs in Newport, a great time, but expect a headache in the morning.
Friday noon-ish, or 10-ish, we can leave and head down the coast to Ensenada. An earlier departure (even 6AM or 4AM or whenever you and the tequila think its a good idea) will ensure smoother seas, as the wind tends to gradually increase in the afternoon. Its 125 miles from Newport to Ensenada. About half way is San Diego, so some can bail out there, or refuel, and head the rest of the way. Gas is generally much cheaper in Ensenada than in the USA.
Friday evening be in Ensenada. NOSA can help identify slips in marinas, or places to anchor (very protected harbor, easy to get to and from shore). The first sailboats will start finishing around midnight, but the big party gets going all day Saturday. Its pretty crazy.
There are facilities to lift boats onto trailers, and launch ramps, so its possible to run down and drive back. I've done that, many people do.
The wind tends to totally shut off at night, so if you leave early, its a smooth ride heading north again.
I'll probably head back around midnight to 4 AM on Sunday, and just go to San Diego for an early breakfast, and head back the rest of the way Sunday.
Its a long way, and it can be rough heading north, especially from about 2PM to 8PM.
NOSA goes to great lengths to ensure that the Vessel Assist fleet is along as an escort, that customs are well aware of whats going on, and arranging things in Ensenada for a fun and safe time.
