BoatU.S. and West Marine Form Strategic Alliance:
West Marine Acquires BoatU.S. Retail Equipment Operation
January 14, 2003 - BoatU.S., which has succeeded in building its ranks to a record 535,000 dues-paying members, has entered into a long term, strategic alliance with West Marine, the world’s largest boating supplier. Under the strategic alliance, West Marine will promote BoatU.S. membership and its consumer services while acquiring the BoatU.S. retail equipment operation, including its 62 marine centers, mail-order and wholesale components.

It is just one more example of how the buyer looses. I know we will hear that they will have larger buying power and we will save money. I guess just like we "save" with the banking and electric monopolies

We have both stores in this area...here are my observations...

the Boat U.S Store has everything and the people are knowledgeable, friendly and very helpful but the store always looks like it was just hit by a cyclone... stuff laying in the aisles, etc...

The West Marine store is clean, neat and wll organized but they never have what I need and the sales people are clueless and arrogant.

Thats is truly amazing because here in Savannah Ga it is the same. Sure is an odd coincidence. I hope it gets better at both areas.

Jeff I totally agree ! Hate going to West Marine. The only thing I ever buy from them is NGK spark plugs for my Yamaha 1100 Jet Ski's, as nobody else usually has the plug number I need. I usually go to Boaters World. They usually have what I need, and most are knowledgable and friendly.

LOL!!! Exactly my observations down here. West Marine never has what I need or want in stock, nor people who can answer a question. The BoatUS store has been great. One can't help but think we're not going to see anything positive out of this, at least not in the Maryland stores.

What we need is a Marine Depot or Boat Depot operation with 2 or 3 locations in every major boating market.
