How much do you pay for boat insurance?
FA18Driver
too dang much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ducHunter
Mine went from $205 to $378 for a 12 yr. old boat that is 21 feet long!:(
mosi
In our area, Homeowners skyrocketed, Auto took a big jump, waiting to see what happens this year with Boat.

Just curious how much faster everyone's boat runs when they are sitting around having a brew and talking with their cronies versus sitting around talking to their insurance agent? :0

I have never owned a boat, nor have I taken a boating safety course. Being 26 years old, is this going to be like getting insurance when I was 16?

I have heard that if your boat goes over 60mph, then you are placed in a different class. Is this true, if so, how do they know how fast the boat goes?

Do I only insure how much I want to (agreed value)?

My only comment is I would stick with an agreed value policy,, its a couple more bucks but it saves any discussion/argument in case something happens.

As far as how much,,, I insured my boat for what I paid for it new, and never ammended it,,, I cant replace it for that money, buy its better then them giving me " what they think its worth "
NJRDZ
I pay just over 500 bucks a year. This includes an agreed upon hull value and also takes into account the replacement cost factor. I can't remember offhand what the liability limits were but the hazardous spill limits are a half million.

For some reason with my insurance company, they want to know how fast your boat will go. If it is over 60 mph then they will not cover you. OK, then my top speed is 59.9 mph on a day that is 150 degrees and I have 10 people on board. What sense does that make?

Hey, Jeff has a great thing going here. It is very easy to have a great time when you are surrounded with fun-loving, self regulating, sincere people who have a common tie. Thanks for putting up with me:) ...

American Pride
I bought a new 36 Eliminator Daytona with 575's in 2002. My insurance is over $5,000. Very few companys covering cats and 100mph boats but they're starting to realize that most accidents are not with these boats but smaller boats where people have never boated nor taken any safety courses.:D
JEFFJ
Hey American Pride.... what part of South Jersey?

American Pride
We're in Mullica Hill near Woodstown and the Del. Mem. bridge. We trailer the boat to Anchor Marine in North East, MD.:)
DonMan
My insurance is $325 / yr with an agreed value of $30K.

I never understood that mph thing. Just because my boat will do more than 60 I have to be in a high risk catagory?
What percentage of your boating time is spent at 60+ mph?
Top Elimn8r
DonMan, that is the same thing I do not understand. Just because a boat will do 60+, does that mean for sure you are going to take it there, and if you do, for how long.
mosi
American Pride---- That is one great ride.

When I saw $5000+/yr for insurance The first thing I thought was... the only way I could afford that would be to hit the lottery or sell drugs.

I looked at your profile and busted a gut :)

CONSULTANT EH???? ;)
American Pride
Thanks Mosi, we really love the boat. She is a lot of fun to run. Big difference from my 32 Baja.

Yes I really am a consultant.....no free drugs. I show them how to leverage technology in the operations. Also do that for the Insurance industry.:D
turbo2256
My insurance went from 320 to 750 this august. No tickets or anything WTF.
turbo2256
I bet after all those mega million dollar homes that burned in CA are tabulated more increases are on the way.

Some increases are because of delegating companies too.
My old company did the same thing. With the delegating co. my insurance doubled after a few years. The parent co. still sent me bills. There premium never increased the delegating co. was making the same amount as the parent co. but they don't have to pay claims. So they were making more than the insurance co. I called the insurance co. and told them there answer is they didn't care.
Aqua-Holic
Just to be devils advocate here. Those of you that are a bit upset that your company wants to know if your boat will do over 60.

I agree that most of the time we are not over 60, but some times you are....you have the ability to do so. Seriously, that is why were are all on this site, and not over at searay.info or tiara.info.

I agree it stinks to pay for the $$$ insurance, but I for one knew that when I bought the boat.

Heck if it wasn't for food and insurance, I would be set :)

Just received a quote two weeks ago from State Farm with a value of 95K and $1,000 ded... they said $925 and 10% discount with boater safety class. They never asked how fast, but did ask about engines... 454Mag's. However, all of my insurance is with State Farm, so they may have discounted.
Jerry G.
$334 /year for $8000 agreed value and liability of coarseon a 15 yr old Powerplay. Thank god cause 2002 was a bad year with two lower unit claims and towing that Boat US handled very fairly and quickly. These guys are great. Can only suggest that anyone without coverage needs to think about the consequences of going without. Just my $.02

2001 Cig Top Gun, HP500EFI's through Progressive is $3900 a year

2002 Cig Gladiator, HP500EFI's thru Progressive is $2600 a year.

2000 Boston Whaler 28 Conquest, twin Optimax 225's thru Progressive is $1900 a year.

I have my home, 2 cars, motorcycles, etc thru State Farm but they will not touch the boats. Kinda pisses me off but my homeowners id pretty reasonable considering I am on direct intercoastal with the open ocean visible through the inlet. First big storm and I may be ocean front!!
rayinla
Probably should, but don't have any.
avho
Progressive agent quoted me $1200 per year.
Progressive online quoted me $620 per year on exact same policy. Go figure.

Grand Theft
I originally got Southern Ins for I think about 250/yr, then after about 30 days they sent me a letter saying I was cancelled after review. I have no accidents or tickets. They said "they know what kind of boat that is and it is capable of more than 60 mph with 330hp". And that was it. I now have Boat US. I think I pay about 350/yr, but I had to say that I would stay in the inland water ways and rivers.

what happens if you insure guests or someone else in another boat? Are they covered under your homeowners policy?

The other item you may not be aware of is the "Clean Water Act" and if your boat sinks or is damaged and pollutes the water you are financially responsible for the cleanup.
yeehaw9
Geez, I can barely afford car insurance on four cars, soon to be adding a 16 year old son to the policy! Guess we could eliminate hot water, most groceries, begin walking the 40 miles to work... :slam:

Dude.....Hope the boat is in her name also.....if not, that policy is worthless.

Better check and see if I'm right or wrong....

.....at least you can cancell the policy and use the $410 for your self insurance fund.

Aggressor Tom
I just called State Farm waiting to get laughed at on a 31 Sonic with 575's. No problem, 500 deductible and $880 a year for coverage value of $100,000. I was shocked.

You can surely lie about power, top speed, driver etc and save a few bucks .
However you will never get a penny out of your insurance company if something were to happen under false pretense. They definitely make a few bucks on us!
