Lanyards- Do you wear them or not?               >>> CLICK HERE FOR THE ORIGINAL THREAD <<<

This is in regards to a recent topic:

Let's see some results and maybe some good stories on how they have saved you and or someone you know. :D
dominator scott
I wear them sometimes like at the Sunsation Rally and there are so many boats running together. Buy I will be honest and several times I just flat forget to attach them to me. Bad habit I should probably break.

Same here, sounds like a good 2008 New Year's Resolution. :)
YOOPER THUNDER
Any time the engine is running. My kids wear it also when they drive the boat, even in no wake zones.
Turboboater
I always wear it. You never know when you might want to go fast.

I'm working on a 100% useage. It's so easy to do and doesn't effect the operation.
I'd say currently going 90% usage all the time, but 100% whenever running hard. I usually forget whenever it's not on, but whenever I do start to run hard, it's the 1st thing I double check now, then put it on when it's not.
As far as my experience,
Approx. 6 yrs ago the wife and I were running on Kentucky Lake with several other. Our 1st time on this lake and was not familar with the rollers put off from barges that can be no where in sight. While running hard, we hit the 1st roller and went to the moon. Came down and hit the next roller, launched again. Felt like forever free falling. The others that seen us knew we were in trouble. As we were launching of the rollers and coming down, my wife came up out her seat, landed on the side of her seat, then when launched again, she went up again and landed between the 2 bolsters, where just happens we had the anchor sitting. She landed on it and cracked a few ribs. I drive with my legs locked under the dash, which held me in. Ever since then, I realize how fast chit can happen. It's even worst when you don't see it coming and aren't prepared. Just buzzing along, then hell breaks loose.

Noticed lately I feel more comfortable whenever the driiver is wearing his whenever I'm a rider.
dirtlawyer
always wear mine - its not a matter of "going fast" - you could get thrown out of the boat at any speed...

Need to add another category.

Whenever I get into the front seat of the Gladiator I put on my Lifeline and kill switch.

I wear my vest at least 75% or more.

I wear my lanyard about 90-95%

I have been trying to remember for a while. I don't think I have forgotten since I got the Sutphen. Not that I didn't think I needed it before(which I should of had it on) I just know I do use it now. I don't know if its the sound of the engines or just know there is 1100hp under the hatch that make me remember. What ever it is I have been using.
kjo43
I wear mine. Does anyone have a nice wrist strap suggestion?

currently I just have it looped like a nuce and it works but isn't the best.

I would like to find one too. My lanyard is a bit short and is on my right. Only way to put it on is to loop it around my wrist, considering I steer with my right hand, that is not an option with the length of the lanyard, it can easily come unhooked...

I recently found out it is the law to wear the kill switch in IL, wear I do most of my boating....
Black Wishbone
I have been clipping to my vest if I'm not wearing my vest then clip them to my shorts. Then you do not even know your wearing it. except when you leave the helm. :(

I wear swim shorts, nowhere to clip them too. And nope, do not wear a vest unless I am in a Poker Run. If vest became a law, i sell the boat...to damn hot here...

A few of us figured this was a shot at me since I have spoken about the horrible boating conditions I have to endure....
ENGREPS
After all of the junk that has happened I have made an effort to hook up the lanyard before I start the engine.

I have also told a couple friends what has happened and how important the lanyard can be. I don't think it matters to them but it matters enough to me that I Will be hooked up it when motor is running.

I always have mine atached! Shorts or vest. I wear my vest when I am solo or when it is just me and my 4 year old son.

I know you realize this, but even water that calm can cause problems at speed.

This is directed at no one. But I still don't understand why you wouldnt wear the safety equipment? To me it is like wearing shoes when walking in the snow, it just makes sense.
slowboat2
its good to see this thread. when i first got this boat i wore the lanyards alot...but then i started not wearing them. all in all, i do know its best to wear them even when just cruising short distances. i need to make it a habit to always have them on when i leave the marina and hit the lake.

thanks for the thread! :)
Black Wishbone
Can anyone give me a reason why I should have two. I am planing on keeping both switch just joining the two lanyand to just make one clip to put on me.

Read one of my previous post about why I do not now. I am looking for a wrist strap and extension so I can wear it. First off, my shorts I wear do not have a place to "clip" it to, second, if I loop it around my wrist, if I were to make a sharp left turn, it will come unhooked and kill the motor.

Understand where I boat, my boating habbits ect and you will see why it is not a big priority.

What irritates me is people calling other names becasue we do not wear them all of the time when I have boated with them for a weekend and NEVER saw him put his on and on top of that consume quite a bit of alcohol while boating. So much, my wife really did not want me to leave the beach with him for a trip to Lake Michigan, so Sun98 and myself stayed with my boat while they went to LM. We had to keep them from pulling back up to the beach becasue there were cops there, that is how much they had been drinking..

So, preach to those who NEED to wear it, I know I SHOULD and am working on that... :)

Those look pretty cool but I prefer to clip in on my shorts or jacket. Most of my swim shorts have laces on the outside or a drawstring on the inside. I just tie a little knotted loop to clip the lanyard on.

If I am boating with someone who I think is out of control or has drank too much I WILL say something to them.

As for preaching, I am asking more so then preaching...

As for where to get a longer one, most any jetski dealer will have a wide variety, mine is long enough to reach my ankle, so I just slip it around my foot. Don't even know it is on.

Jackets, if I am just cruising I don't wear it. If it is rough, fast or slow I wear it. If I am going fast I always wear it, hot out or not. To me it is just worth it. I know it will not always save me, but it will improve my odds.

Do I slip up? Yes. I just try to do it as often as possible, I want my 2 year old to enjoy the boat with me for a long time.
29Scarabthunder
I have been wearing mine almost all the time so much so now with the new power that twice I have moved either onto the bow or towards the stern and pulled it out and the motor shut off so I know mine works too :p: :D

Shameless - I attached a SeaDoo Foam Lanyard to my kill switch.... you can buy them almost anywhere.... its an adjustable Foam filled strap you can adjust them to your wrist size or in my case I attach it to my ankle.... doesn't interfere with my hands & I can't walk away from the wheel without it shutting down the boat..... actually I forget I have it in sometines & walk to the back of the boat at a dock & poof... boats off :D

I wear my lanyard all the time and anyone else who drives my boat is given the clip before they get the wheel. I bought the smallest stainlees steel carabiner that west marine sells so I can hook them onto my waistband of my swim shorts or any belt straps. http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wc...arabeaner&i

As for saftey, why are there so many pictures I see posted with so many of you having beers in your hands while rafted up? I am more afraid of this than a lanyard. Keep in mind, I am an avid beer drinker and will not tell someone what they are doing is wroing! But its funny how people choose to see life as it fits to thier liking!

Here we go. The last time the lanyard subject was brought up the debate got pretty heated at times so this should be pretty interesting before it's finished.
I admit that I constantly forget to attach the lanyard to me but I don't feel it makes me an unsafe boater. I would rather forget to attach it then be intoxicated and running the boat with the lanyard on.

I've seen plenty of boaters in the past driving and wearing the lanyards but they were so plowed that the bolster is the only thing holding them up. How safe is that?

GRH,thats not the case at all. We all have a few cocktails now and then. I was just merely saying that I have ran into some boaters in my time(nobody from here) that are so chit faced that they shouldn't even be operating a boat or even a canoe, much less worrying about a lanyard. Thats all. :winker:
El Guapo
My switch does not work it was bypassed by the previous owner. When I took it out before I bought it I was sitting in the boat looking for one before I started it cause I knew it was supposed to have one. The previous owner asked what was wrong I said where is the key like the jetskiis have and he replied you don't need that chit and I said why he said don't fall out and I was like whatever. It was always in the back of my mind of one the things I needed to fix but I never did and I consider my self a safe boater.
bc232
Not as much as i should! :( :(
I should wear it all the time.

I'm going to order that wrist band, that along with a new mindset will get me to wear it all the time!

DS.... you "ran into" them & they were to chit faced to drive? :laugher: :laugher:

Just kidding..... I know what you're saying.... I believe its an "attitude" about performance anything that makes one safe.... if you think "it" can't happen to you... and you drive accordingly.... being sober & wearing a lanyard aren't going to be enough.... assume the worst that can happen will.... and drive accordingly.... and you might be lucky enough to never have an accident.... hopefully....

It wasn't until I took Tres Martins school in 05 that Tres showed us the importance of always wearing our kill switch lanyards .
Prior to school I only wore them one time in the Atlantic Ocean on my TopGun.
You don't need to be running real fast to get knocked out of your seat or bolster , especially in a smaller lighter rig .

If a drive falls off or you hit that out of the blue rouge wave we will have an none guided missile ,just like the Gun that landed in the tree last Summer and probably the Fountain that hit the rocks a few week's back.

I no some will say who are you to talk running at times 150mph+ in my Cat, but at least if I get ejected my rig may not run you or your family over two miles down the bay.
Good luck with this one!

I don't understand why people have to be so cruel to each other we are all boaters and Love to have fun on the water. People are kind of like boats we come in different shapes and sizes nobody's perfect (even us) we all do different things that others may not but that's what makes us individuals.
Why can't we all get along?!

All the people I've met from speedwake are great people we all have something in common. And ALL seem to be pretty responsible.

I dont think this subject should be about who is right or wrong or about what someone has done before. This is an issue that may save you or someones elses life. I am just as guilty as the other guy for not wearing mine 100% of the time. I try and remember to wear it and even the wife has reminded me to put it on. They are installed in the boat for a reason. Just like your seatbelts in your car. I would never wear mine, but now I am getting into the habit of wearing it. Do I beleive a seatbelt will save you in every type of accident. NO. and I have seen people killed because of there seatbelt on.

I am going to say something that may pi$$ some people off. I am not trying to offend anyone and this is not directed at any single person.

We ALL need to grow up ( Including MYSELF). Boating is a privledge, not a neccessity. We all enjoy going out on the weekend and hanging with friends and having a few drinks. Every year we hear about more accidents and deaths on the water. Were they all wearing there Lanyard. I really dont know, But I am sure that by wearing it it may have prevented a few. We all make excuses why we dont wear it. As a boater and a friend to many on this board.
STOP WITH THE EXCUSES AND START WEARING IT.
Find a way to to attach it, I dont care if its around your foot, wrist, belt loop or around your neck. Put it on. We all know what can happen out on the water either calm or rough. It only takes 1 time to have something happen that we may regret for the rest of our lives. And when we are with friends, remind them to put it on. We dont need anymore bad news coming from the boating world. We dont need the government adding new laws that bar us from haveing fun. We all need to stick together and take care of each other no matter how you feel about someone. Life ( yours or mine) is not something that we should take for granted. Make sure we do eveything in our power to protect ourselves and other so we all can have a safe boating season....
sunsation98
funny how the ones asking, "why cant we all get along", come from a party that feels its OK to make unwarranted remarks about fellow boaters.....
sunsation98
Chris,

Good point, but I still wont take the time to install one in my cruiser. Therefor I will not be wearing one! :)

I am confident in my ability to captain my boat without ANY ISSUES arising that would call for the need of a lanyard!

But will admit, when I was boatless for a few weeks this summer and was running this boat, I did wear a life jacket and a lanyard when I was out at night by myself.!

Oh yea- and at night I ran on plane at 30 mph also! (but that should be under another thread-do you run on plane at night) That way someone will come out of the wood works to tell me I am a fool for running at night. :laugher:

seriously the only one I see trying to get a rise out of people is you......I've never boated with you....and I have never met you. So i can't speak for if you are a good guy, someone who is safe to boat with etc.

But I HAVE met jason and amanda, I have met Chris and donna, and I can say that anytime I ran with them I felt I was running with a safe group of boaters, they wore life jackets and kill switches.....

Amanda even let me borrow their extra when I left mine at home the other day....

If there is a past life I don't know about, thats fine, but let it die.....I haven't heard a single bad word about you all summer.

This appears to be a "personal feeling" not shared with many others here.

I understand that- but I am also not running a boat that would require one!

But like stated, I have worn them with out a problem, when I felt it would be necessary. I am confident in the decisions I make while captaining my boat. And you betchya its my opinion, not shared with others-yes, but hey thats why I am operating my boat and nobody else is!

Doesn't require one? ANY piece of equipment that does NOT have a throttle that self centers or auto neutrals should have a kill switch.

IF we don't police ourselves, someone else will.

Your choice..for now.

Yes sir, agreed.

But remember I am am running this boat!

If it is that ruff to where an issue may arise. I dont go!

Again I am more than confident in every decision I make regarding the saftey of my vessel and its occupants!
SHIP4BRAINS
your over confidence is what worries people.
sunsation98
Thats in opinion I will take!

What worries me more, is just because people can afford something doesnt mean they are smart enough to operate it. This goes for the whole boating community!

With that being said, it is what it is!

This has gotten so far off it is rediculous...

Simple, I do not tell people how to live their lives, do not tell me how to live mine. You do not like that I do not wear my teather everytime I am out, then do not boat with me simple. If I do not like how you handle yourselves, I keep away, simple.

We simply can't avoid ALL accidents, and think about it, we are all probably much safer boating then walking down the street.

I find it funny that so many people here say go ahead, tow more then your truck is rated for, it is no big deal, that is ok...but a Lanyard, if you do not wear it you will burn in hell.

So, my theory is, you do not like my boating habits, stay the hell away from me and I will stay away from you...

I looked at everyone I was around this weekend and what a surprise, nobody was wearing one, and damn, I never felt unsafe....

When was the last time you heard of a driver being ejected from a 25-26 foot Cruiser style boat running at 25 mph??? Probably never. We hear of people being struck by lightening more then Someone like Ken being thrown from a cruiser, yet we do not walk around with ground straps attached to our azzes....

How/where did you arder these from?? Maybe because I am not a member on OSO, but I did not see a link or anything. Also, went to the website and they are not on there either.
