| Does anybody know what size battery I should get for my boat? Has a dual battery set-up that was currently running a non-marine 800 Cold Cracking Amp (CCA) battery for starting with a deep cycle marine 500 CCA for accessories/back-up. The 800 died recently. Do I really need another 800, or would a second 500 deep cycle suffice? Needs to turn a 455 big block. |

What type of accessories are you running ? Big stereo ?
You need at least 500 cca to crank a 455 reliably.
Remember CCA is COLD CRANKING AMPS, it`s a different rating than CA - cranking amps. |

| Actually, the stereo was removed recently, so for all intensive purposes, the second battery acts solely as a back-up. |

I think you`ll be fine with (2) 500 cca batteries. |

| What are you starting? Most engine manufacturers have a minimum rating. 500 is very low. I like the 1000 mca batteries. |

He`s got a 455 Olds in a jet boat with no extra accessories. 500 cold cranking amps should be just fine. More would be better, but 500 cca will do the job. |

Per Merc's manual.... "Min. Battery Requirements" for the 496 and 496HO are 650 cca / 825 mca/ 150Ah.
I think I have a 500 cca in my boat (496HO) and I never had any issues. |
