Where does this cross the line?

If I asked your personal income I could see it being a problem, but a Poll does not ID you in any way, no one knows who even takes the poll......this is why I dont see the alarm. |

My thoughts exactly. Some people who own boats that cost over $250,000 probably earn more than $200K per year or they did at one time and have a nice nest egg.
I think I need to earn a lot more. I want a big boat, but I don't want to sweat the payments (or have no payments). The only way that will happen is to earn a lot more. |

I don`t mind voting. I don`t see what the big deal is ....
I don`t think you`ll get a true feel for what you`re trying to obtain though. Case in point : I am in the upper bracket of your poll, but I probably have one of the least expensive boats of anyone here. . $13K.
I also live in a modest home $130K.
I drive a 2005 Dodge 2500 pickup and my wife has a 97 Camaro.
I owe money on my house and pickup. I have one teenager living at home ...
How`s that for some personal info ? :) |

| I voted, no big deal. I was wondering the same thing, how do people afford 200K + boats.... I have maybe 20K tops into my boat (1/2 of that engine work), and I feel that is probably too much since it's just a toy. If I owned a expensive boat I would probably never drive it, be too busy keeping it clean and afraid of scratching it to enjoy it :D |

Yeah, net worth is what it's all about. The problem here is what is depreciating and what is not?
For instance, I am also in the upper bracket, but live in a tiny home (relative to these days!) at 2,100 SF. I also happen to have this tiny home on 3 acres of waterfront with 350 feet of frontage on lake Travis, that is one of the rare ones that has a gradual slope to the lake. My view is not good because I refuse to cut all the oak and cedar trees, but I do have a two slip dock down there!!
Also:
1. Owe <100k on my home, that is on the tax books at >750k.
2. Dock paid for.
3. 1998 Jeep Wrangler paid for.
4. 2000 Mazda MPV paid for.
5. 2004 Mazda MPV paid for.
6. 2006 Fleetwood motorhome = owe ~50k. (6% rate)
7. 2007 Ford F150 Texas edition = owe ~13k. (6.5% rate)
8. 1999 Donzi 22ZX with an HP500 all paid for.
9. 2003 Bayliner 18 with a wakeboard rack all paid for.
Vehicle and boat insurance: HUGE!
Home taxes: HUGE!
But we have ZERO credit card debt.
===
I have one teenager still at home, who is a varsity cheerleader at high school, who also is a star All Star cheerleader (she won the national championships in jumps and 2nd in tumble pass last year). This gets EXPENSIVE, traveling all across the country!!!
Plus, I have an older daughter who is useless, but needs to drive, so she has one of the MPV's...
Add up everything, and I have no money left for a high end boat!!
It's a matter of priorities, at least around here...

SINCE I GOT MY OWN PERSONAL BOAT BACK IN THE 50'S I'VE SPENT OVER 4 MILLION DOLLARS ON BOATS!
1. BUYING GO FAST BOATS
2. THEN ALL THE REPAIRS AND ALL THE **** THAT GOES WRONG
3. BRAVO UPGRADES AND REPAIRS UNTIL I AM BLUE IN THE FACE.
NO MATTER WHO MAKES THEM, IF THERE FOR A BRAVO THEY ALL BREAK, IT'S JUST A MATTER OF TIME!
THE SMARTEST THING I EVER DID WAS BUY MERCURY #-6 DRY SUMP OUTDRIVES. NO MORE DRIVE PROBLEMS----PERIOD! I HAD THEM ON MY DCB MACH 34 AND A SKATER AND I WISH I HAD GOTTEN THEM ON MY MACH 29.
58 HOURS OF EASY RUNNING AND I AM EATING UP A SET OF GEARS THAT I WILL HAVE TO REPLACE THIS WINTER.
I'VE GOT A FRIEND WHO HAS A 30 ELIMINATOR CAT THAT HAS GONE THRU 12 BRAVO XR DRIVES AND HE JUST DOESN'T GET IT!
IF I HAVE ANOTHER DRIVE PROBLEM WITH THESE BABY ILMOR MOTORS, I'LL SELL THE BOAT AND BUY ANOTHER BOAT WITH #-6 DRIVES.
IF YOU ONLY KNEW THE AMOUNT OF TIME AND MONEY I'VE SPENT, YOU'D THINK I SHOULD BE SHOT!
WAS IT WORTH IT? NO F---INIG WAY!
MY GIRLFREIND AND TRAVEL IS WHAT I SPEND MY MONEY ON NOW!

you really cant get a good picture of someones liquid cash situation with just a poll. the couple years I worked in mortgages I saw some of the most fu@ked up situations come from guys who make more $$ than I can imagine.

and I would like to bring up another point. Only 25% of the population makes over 50k per year. Thats per person not per household.
So if you ever begin to feel sorry for yourself or feel that you dont make much money remember that fact. I hear alot of guys in my "click" who act like 50k is chump change. Well im sure there are plenty of people who would love that income. |

Income is relative to where you live. For most people, housing is the biggest part of their budget. I live 30 miles outside of Wash. DC. As of the last few yrs. it would be tough to find a decent house for less than 300K, and still be within commuting distance to the city where people tend to draw higher salaries.
100K/yr. is HUGE in some place but NOT others. |

Apparently I'm in the uper end of your poll. Income has little bearing on assets. I have a buddy that makes 1/3 what I do. His wife works but doesn't make enough to really matter (mine does not). He has toys worth every bit as much as mine...Dually, Boat, etc. He has a corvette, I have a bigger house but owe less on it than he does on his. My C.C. are all paid each month...he bounces balances around from one to the other. What the hell difference does it make. He's still a hell of a nice guy and I don't have to pay his bills. If he's happy with his situation then great (no way I could sleep at night like that). I've met some guys that obviously make alot of $$$ and are azzholes I have NO respect for. Money changes people, and alot of them for the worse. Be happy with what you have and people will be happy for who you are.
sorry, just my $.02  |

Interesting thread.......
I know people with boats worth 4-6 times what mine is with less equity in them then I have in mine (100%) so what does that mean? Nothing as long as they are happy, i couldnt do it. Me I have absolutely no debt except my house and my goal is to have the money to pay that off ASAP, thats when ILL be comfortable. I voted to see the results but ive been in each of those catogories in the last few years, heck my W2 this year may end up in the first... :unhappy1: |

I know people who don't even tell the IRS the answer to this question!
Your income bands are too wide if you really wanted an accurate vote. There's a reason why the 90 - 200 group shows the greatest number of voters. You should have had a few income ranges above 90K, broken down in 30 or 40K increments like you started with to be accurate, actually 20K increments would have given you closer results!
And, a 200K top is way too low for this group!
 |

Very simple, just follow a financial plan.
Most people with expensive boats have their house and car paid for first..
Here is a perfect example of that plan,
Pay for the roof over your head first...
Then pay for the car.
Then get the 200K boat!

| Everyone I know with money and big boats came from humble neighborhood blue collar roots. Most us us grew up in Delaware County and you don't get more blue collar than that in terms of Philly suburbs. I do not know a single person in boating that was born with the proverbial "silver spoon" in their mouth. Some of them are white collar execs and some are high school grad business owners who have started their own companies and one well for themselves. I only know I guy with a big boat that took over running a company his father started and he works 5 to 6 days a week, 12 to 14 hour days. |

| When i started my business 20 some years ago, i invested 40K of my savings, worked 7 days a week, 10-12 hours a day. In 2 years i was netting 100K plus a year. Did I slow down, hell no, i expanded, but didn't listen to what people were telling me. Long story short it cost me over 200K in 15 months. Pulled back, installed all my energy and work ethics that i did previously, and recouped my loses in 3 years. Eventually i slowed down and looked at retirement. All those years the only luxury item i purchased was a new 1992 Lincoln. There were times when i looked at bigger boats, wanted to buy a Corvette, but i didn't. Oh yeah, I almost boat a Rolex around 1990.. ;) I did retire for a short period, but didn't like it. I work part time 16-20 hours a week that takes care of my wants, and adds a little to my personal stash. |

So true. There is no future in debt. I have and, would never finance a car more than 36mos unless it was 0% then finance it for 100yrs. Never financed a boat or any other toy. I don't get rid of a car or truck or boat untill it is really used up. Always buy the best quality you can afford, not just something to get you by. Nothing wrong with financing though. An old Jewish guy told me when I was young, "It's hard to go broke if you don't owe anyone anything." I have never forgotten it. Oh yeh, and buy land. As much as you can possibly get, even if it is not in your state. |

| I think I have always lived at or under my means and free from short term debt, but this has been an expensive year and I am doing everything I can to get back to a comfortable level, personaly I am more motivated when I push the envelope a little, when I get too comfortable I can get lazy, I'm in sales so this strategy works for me. |

My house is worth way more than my boat, I've owned 4 houses and only 3 boats but the boats outnumber the 2 airplanes I have owned.
Lets not even begin to count the cars and trucks! |

Chjohn, Did you figure a way to take Earned income and convert to Capitol Gains? I am working on that (pipe dream now) sure like 15% rather than the close to 40%.
Sort of maybe something could be like that.....I have no loans or debt, I own everything clear and free. No silver spoon, no inheritance, worked hard, spent wisely. My earned income last few years is zero, last year my total federal taxes paid was $771. Nothing illegal, just take advantage of the existing rules. It is working for me, but it is not a one size fits all plan. |

Well, I live in a 3500 square foot house (well the 1700 sq/ft addition isn't done but almost) that isn't paid for yet, have 3 vehicles with loans, and a boat with a small loan. Oh well, my financial plan I'm working on will have it all paid off by the time I retire, plus I'll have enough to put my 3 year old son through college.
Hopefully my son will get a scholarship and then I'll be able to buy a better boat :D or maybe I'll buy another corvette that I sold when I had him. |

If I were you, I would "plan" on the oops's that got me after my oldest two daughters were around and older...
My oldest is 27, my second 25, and now I still have a 15 year old daughter around!!! Yeah, Oops... I now have three grandkids and still have my youngest daughter around...
Things can suddenly happen in your older age that you might not plan for, at least that's what happened to me...
===
I must say that my youngest is the dream daughter. My older ones never had any 'drive'.
My youngest is incredible. Whoever marries her will have their hands FULL!!!
She is an all A's student (sophomore at Lake Travis High, with all pre-AP classes), is already a varsity cheerleader, won last years National championship in cheer jumps and second in tumble pass, and has aspirations this year of going to the cheerleading individual world competitions!!
What's really strange is that she doesn't want any of her friends to know about any of this...This to me is ODD! They know because they see it, and I talk about it!! She doesn't! Very ODD!!
You can see some of her stuff at my Youtube thing. Look up Mudball100. There you will see her old tumble pass (she is now doing a switch kick full), her new jumps, her national championship all star level 5 team win for 2007, and her worlds team from 2007, where they came in 5th in international junior coed.
Anyway, the LAST kid gets WAY more expensive, if you have anything like mine!! BUT, I wouldn't have it any other way!!!
If the kid has 'drive', then the world should be theirs, no matter the cost...
Best,
Grandpa Kent |

This thread started with the simple question, how much do you make and was clarified by the person who opened the thread to how did you make the kind money needed to have the things seen on this forum.
I think you either misunderstand what has been posted here or simply made a poor choice of word when you used "self conscious" in you comment.
Self Conscious implies embarrassment, the people here who have made it are far from embarrassed how they did it.
Don't misinterpret those posts as bragging, it is the expression of pride about accomplishments and the material things each member who posted chose to enjoy their success.
Jeff phrased it most eloquently when he said;
Everyone I know with money and big boats came from humble neighborhood blue collar roots. Most us us grew up in Delaware County and you don't get more blue collar than that in terms of Philly suburbs. I do not know a single person in boating that was born with the proverbial "silver spoon" in their mouth. Some of them are white collar execs and some are high school grad business owners who have started their own companies and have done well for themselves. I only know one guy with a big boat that took over running a company his father started and he works 5 to 6 days a week, 12 to 14 hour days.
If you take a second to read my profile you will find the words.......
"Came From Nothing Not Going Back!"
I believe those words would fit the life of most of the members here who have posted to this thread. |

| If I could get my daughter out of that 7900. a year high school I could have a bigger boat now! haven't had a raise in 6 years, job was great when I first started now I have too many years in to start over. Oh well, live and learn. I have been saving for my retirement since I was 20 years old and think I have my priorities right. My house is up for sale and going to dip into the savings for the next one and that scares the crap out of me, it is nice to know that money is there and a big chunk will be gone with the next house. |

Damn, I need to move !!!!
Your garage is bigger than my house. Well, close to it. We have a very small place and ours is a good chunck more $$$$. Street value.
And I'm on a dirt road (and surrounded by dirt roads) with only 1/2 acre of land. :dead: :dead:
Wholly crap !!!!!
Not kidding at all. 165K is about what it would sell for in todays market. I bought the house 6 years ago for 130K with the garage, all sitting on a 2 acre parcel. It was built in the early 1900's and has been totally remodeled. I could of bought newer but would of had to sacrifice my garage and that just wasn't an option. |

My daughter is now 3 months old and we just put her into Daycare. $1100 per month. :angry1: 13k per year, and she sleeps 5 ouf the 8 hrs that she's there. By the time she is 5 yrs old, I'm going to spend 65k on daycare. Needless to say, no new boat for me for a while. |

| Being in the Marines I don't make jack chit, cleared 27K , but I have one of the coolest jobs one could have. Benefits are good and I get to travel all over the place on their expense. I'm always going to school to get spooled up on our aircraft so when I get out I'll have skills I could use out in the real world, but I'm not ready to get out yet. I need to do one more thing then I'll get out. I balance out my kids and my boat, it sucks being a single parent and my rent for my house is out of control. It will be easier when I get to Texas. |
