Well,

I was havin some noise comin from behind the motor, so I decided to investigate, yup, you got it, bad Gimbal Bearing!!!!!

Pulled the drive during the week, and figured I would pull the bearing real quick this morning, head down to West Marine, pick up the parts, and have it back together Tomorrow. WRONG!!!!! :banghead: :banghead:

Took me all day to get it out. I went out this morning, picked up a slide hammer, and started pulling, no good, broke the hooks on the first one!!!! :angry1: :angry1:

Brought it back, and got a Bigger one, broke a hook on that one too!!!!! :angry1: :angry1: Well, I got it out, :D :D :D :D IN PIECES!!!!!!

I'll post some pictures a little later.

I know, trust me, half of the time I spent was sittin back, smokin and drinkin, pondering whether or not to get brutal with it, but sometimes ya just gotta say f-it, if all else fails get a bigger hammer!!!! I tried everthing, penetrating oil, Propane, spent an hour just tapping aroud the edge thinking it might loosen up any corrosion, NOT!!!!!!

I am sure I was only half as brutal as a Marina Monkey would have been, seeing as its not his boat, but its hard to convince yourself to abuse it like that.

I will post more, as it goes back together, I think I will take my time, do it right, and probably be off of the water for a few weekends :( :( . I might as well Paint the whole unit, and change the Water pump impeller while I am at it!!! :D :D :D

So, how many beers were drunk before the brutal attack? And how many during the attack? And how many after the attack? :laugher:

Actually, I haven't had to replace one...yet  Hell, I haven't even pulled a drive...yet   If I need something pulled, I'll call ya :D

What kind of noise where you hearing?? I grease mine all the time, but have never replaced it. Its a 97,but this is only my second year with the boat. I am starting to hear a noice when I turn my wheel all the way left or right. Could that be the gimbal going?????. Friends of mine say they are easy to change.

I went through this last year, Mine came out whole though. When putting the new one in FREEZE it over night It makes it much easier to put in. Also get the merc driver or make one out of pipe or something. It must start in straight! I used a 2 pound sledge hammer to seat mine. You should replace the gimbal seal too.

Here is a link to my project:

If you install the new bearing in reverse you wont have to pull the outer bearing ring the next time. Those grouvs you see in that outer ring are so you can twist the bearing and pull it straight out.
Yup, I have read this, they say the only reason they changed the way they put them in, is so you have to pay them to do it!!!! :angry1: :angry1: :angry1:
