When people ask you how fast your boat is, are you honest with them and give them GPS speed or do you give them speedo speed?

Let's face it there are people who would never know the difference but I still feel like sh*t if I tell them speedo speed.

I found this to be an interesting question because I am trying to sell my Stingray and everyone asks how fast is it? Sure I wish it went as fast as the speedo indicated (67-68) but the reality is that GPS says (61-63). It is difficult when someone comes to look at my boat and I have the 6.2L/320hp and they just came from looking at a 7.4L/310hp and the guy tells him it does 70. My little old 63 isn't sounding so good.

So......back to the question. Do you give GPS or Speedo speeds to people who ask?

Good question !!

I have always told my true GPS speed (80.7) but lately I'm thinking about BS'ing just like everyone else (it seems).

Last week I raced this Checkmate that the owners friend told me runs WAAAAY into the 80's well in all honesty that boat ran about 74 .

When we got to the ramp they asked me if I had a blower...I replied " sure , don't all boats ? Isn't that the thing you switch on before you start you motor?" They all got a kick out of that !

I'm proud to say that I told Splinter that my boat went slower than it actually did. Then when he got it and cranked it up for himself, it went faster than I told him...

hmmmm.... wonder if that nitro methane I dumped in the tank will cause any long-term damage?

??????????????????????

Jeff you are exactly right, my Baja Hammer will read some cool speeds on the speedo. I have the low water pickup, 78-80 on the speedo,(good thing makes me believe allot of water is being supplied to cool the engine). But the GPS, mine is a hand held (RAM Mounted), been in the Army for 16 years and it got mortars to where they should be, reads 66-68, depending on direction(upstream?down stream). In 3-4 footer's I am comfortable with the tabs a little down at about 58-60 GPS, more like 65 speedo, WTFO. After I burn this engine up, (yeah, like your comment OB, drive mine like that) I will put in a 496HO and all the goodies with it. Might even go up to a 30 Y2K Superboat. Unlike Jeff I could care less about the cabin (Army, been used to sleeping on the ground for 16 yrs) so all I want is speed in super rough water. Just my .02.

I do one better. After you spank someone, and you get back to the docks, they always ask...What you got in there???? I look at them with a straight face and say,a 4.3 litre...
But to answer your question splinter,I would ONLY accept GPS or Radar as an acceptable answer....I don't care what guages you have

The 454Mag is looking sweet Jay.

I think there is a big misrepresentation to propsective new boat buyers as well.

The seller says......oh yeah it's a 454. Well there is a hell of a difference between a 454Mag and a 7.4MPI (454). Oh well. I can only be honest and keep it spotless and eventually someone will be very happy.

I am way too honest and forthcoming with people who ask. I usually give a speed I am sure I can back up even if I have to take someone with a GPS for a ride.

I always tell them its not how fast you run...its how well you run fast. In some Lake Mich 4-5 ft this past weekend practically no body was running faster than 65. In fact most were down around 40. We however were running hard and having lots of fun. Ran it around 70 most of the time.

I tell people who ask me, my speedo speed, and then I tell them the G.P.S. speed . Then I explain the difference, so maybe they will ask the next guy is that speedo or GPS?
Thats as honest as I can be. No time for Bull ****!
No time for poeple that speak it!
