I sure dont want to piss you off.......Just trying to save you thousands of $$$$$ But............

NO you dont know what to look for !!!!... $666 is high
but you might not know about a stringer until the bottom splits open in big water or a motor breaks free.
Just one example of things that can & do happen !!
Call '3DMC"s guy.....I could go on & on with Horror stories !!!

I called him and I am waiting for him to call back, but I am not paying anyone $200 /hr. to bang on the hull with a mallet. These guys want to charge more than it's worth, than I will buy a book, or do some research and figure it out myself.
I mean, when I called that other place and they wanted $666 for a 1.5 hour job... There's no job in the world worth that kind of money, plus they want to charge me mileage from Mentor to Cleveland. What's that, a whole 15 miles? They shouldn't be pushing so hard, because they are going to push themselves out of the market.

Progressive doesn't require a survey. I am reluctant to spend too much money assuring myself that this respectable dealer is not scamming me. I talked to Paul, and he want's $111 /hr. or $444 for the boat and he spends approx. 4 hours. That doesn't even include any time on the engines other than a "yep, they are there".

Tell him all you want is a "hull" survey....You dont care about the fresh water,guages & other little chit that you can check yourself......Get a Mechanic to check the engines {Leakdown}
The structure is what you NEED....All the other stuff is just $$$....Some BIG $$ but still..just $$
If you are out running 4's & a stringer lets loose you can crack her down the middle & be on the bottom in seconds......You dont want Moma & the little one in the drink !!!!!......
Just tryin to help....I will stop now...Good luck !!

That's a good idea, maybe I can get him to limit his survey to the things I am concerned about... stringers, misture, roten transom... which are the things I don't know about. The mechanical side I can do myself, and I don't want to hear from him that the seats are ripped (duh). I don't need him to check the floors in the cabin, or the mechanics of the equipment (I have already done that). Plus the dealer is going to give me a wet run in the spring before I accept delivery.

Thanks for the advice.

Basically, I was getting advice on several boats I am considering.
The first boat is a blue '90 34 Scarab (page one), the other is a red and white '90 34 Scarab (Shagnasty around page 6 or so), and the most recent is a '88 370 ES Baja (see pictures on page 12).

He's right. If you don't know what your doing get the surveyor. Pay now or pay later. And good move, Don't use a surveyer that works for the marina your buying the boat from.

I agree, if the boat was priced for $23, I wouldn't be typing right now. I would be writing a check. As for that 1983 Scarab.... Junk. I wouldn't buy something that old. I am obviously skeptical about buying a 1990. I am starting to think I should buy the 1995 .38 Special in Detriot. But now that's another 10K. He's asking $80K but he will probably take $70K. Maybe I should scap both the Scarab (sorry Excel) and the Aronow.

By the way, what's the difference between a Scarab and an Excel? I thought this boat was a Scarab Excel.
Dude, your talking about me putting peoples boats down? I would never call someones boat junk. He has put allot of time in to that boat. That would be like calling some guys wife or G/f a skank. I know your new to this, but remember allot of boats here people have put allot of time, work, and money into. Like I said in another forum, theres allot of old school boats out there giving lessons to brand new boats. When you criticize new boats its directed at the manufacture, when you criticize an old school boat its directed towards the owner of that boat. Take this into consideration when talkning about boats.
