Alright, I took the suggestion of the tech section and bought the Taylor (76601) spiropro plug wires. After 3 weeks of back order I finally get my wires today and they don't fit. Description calls for BBC race fit under headers. As I should have guessed, the distributor connections are femaile like an automotive chevy. The plug ends are male and plug into the automotive type cap. My mercruiser distributor cap (1988) has male ends and needs a female plug end. Is there anything I can do to make these work? Buy automotive female distributor caps? If not, anyone know what taylor wire works for bbc mercruiser t-bolt cap? Looks like I am going to have to send these back but hoping not. Help!!

I just ordered a set of Taylor Wires from Summit Racing as well. I got mine in 3 days. You have to order the HEI style wires. I ordered the custom fit HEI style spiro pro wires in red. They were like $43. The only thing they didn't come with was the short coil wire. I guess I have to use the stock one that's already on there.

You could probably call Taylor and order the proper ends for your application. Then you could cut the existing ends off and crimp the new ends on. I use MSD wires and they come with BOTH types of ends and a crimper to install the ends. I was very happy with the MSD's.

Crane Cams has a new wire available now. They look like they would be a top notch product.

That's where I went wrong. Funny, the ones I got came with the coil wire. Hopefully the three days is still good. I am planning on installing the engines next weekend and installing the wires after engines are in would be a major pain!!

Thanks fellas!!

I sent the 76601 blue wires back and now have the 76002 black wires on the way. Would have been three more weeks for the blue. Hope they are right this time!!

Just curious, does the spiropro name mean these wires are spiral wound which is recommend for MSD ignitions?

The engines and heads are 12 years old and they are highly ported and they finally rusted through into one of the intake ports. One head weaps water into the cylinder after it sits for a while.
The new heads dynoed at 700 HP on a 540 with a milder cam than I plan on running.

Got the correct taylor wires today and all fit well, except the coil wire needs to be cut to length and an end installed. Can anyone tell me and bajaislander how to crimp the ends correctly? No directions included and I hate to mess up new coil wires with a hack job

What are the heads you are getting Tinkerer? Planning to just bolt them on the short blocks for this season? Little late in the winter to start working on the boat :p:

I am getting two sets of Jim Valakeo ported PRO 1's
These heads on a 540 put out 700HP.
I am not a early year boater. I don't wear a jacket to go boating.
I usually don't get on the water untill the week before Memorial day.
what will decide what gets done is how much $ I have come in in the next few weeks.

Thanks jetmech, I assume you mean regular wire terminal crimpers. Never thought of that. Called taylor today and they talked about stipping back and folding over the core, but said some chit about pressing crimp to 45 punds in a press.

Jim seems like he really knows his stuff Tinkerer. Those heads should be very nice!
