Ready for summer, READY FOR SUMMER? My boat is still in winter storage. :( A few years back we had 22" inches of snow the first week of April. In a couple more weeks I will start thinking about getting it out and STARTING to work on it.

Coming out of storage next week end. Motor is out and bilge needs to be cleaned up and diamond plate installed. Got all new gauges to install and a GPS speedo. The 12th it goes to get the new 502 installed and set up.
Things are getting close.........
Then all that is left is prop testing again and buying new props.

Putting scoops on, snap out carpet, interior getting redone, redoing the dash, trailor is getting ready to have a make over (sand blasted and re-painted, all new l.e.d.'s, tongue extension, custom pinstripped), then she should be ready before mid may.

I know theres some last minute people who haven't fixed there boat yet for summer I took my Scarab out the other day and fried an impeler. but luckly had a spare and we were back out on the water in an hour :D
So, about 20 of the 24 postings go to show there's a lot more than "some", and I am one more. boats at shop getting gimbel tightened up, props getting tuned, need new lube reservoirs and trim cables for drives and tabs.
I hope to splash 1st time late April. :)

I also need to do valve springs is this something you can do with the heads on do you have to take it to a machine shop to get this done. the guy I bought it from said do to the high lift in the cam I should do the valve springs every other year couldnt I just buy better valve springs to keep from doing this all the time

Spent most of yesterday working on mine only to find it has cooling problems.
Not sure if it's the thermostat, housing, or the raw water impeller.
I'll find out soon enough.

you can change springs with the heads on but you have to do 2 things first,
Air compressor and a fitting that goes into spark plug hole to keep cylinder pressurized to hold valve up
2, you need to get a really REALLY good magnet and preferably a long handle spring compressor, undo the rocker arm, pull it off, screw on the spring compressor to the stud, make sure cylinder is presurized, (you will hear piston go to BDC) and no air escaping
then POP the spring down, and use the magnet to grab the keepers or your BONED!
then pull springs, replace them one at a time and put new ones on.
Sort of time consuming and you will have to pull your exhaust to gain access to valve covers in most cases
Not too bad though, I have done it twice now, not a huge deal
just sort of a pain in the *** more or less

Thanks Jayl13 Sounds like this will be a drink beer after the job is done so no little parts end up in the wrong places any idea on what valve springs are the best to use for a upgraded 502. upgrades include roller rockers cam not sure on the specs gil offshore exhaust reworked ECM. The person I got the boat from said dynoed at 540 horse at 5300 and 562 ft lbs at 4600

Convincor,
What you need to do is find out what cam is in the engine, From there each cam has their own requirements on what seat pressures both open and closed they should be.
also has a guide for how much of a shim should be under the springs and a coil bind measurement.
I had bad coil bind after my engines were rebuilt and I lunched 10 pushrods in about 25 seconds so be careful with this.
the springs HAVE to be correct according to the cam manufacturers spec or close VERY close to it.
if you dont have enough spring pressure you will have valve float.
which is where the lifter pushrod and rocker and valve actually leaves the surface of the cam and flies off of it cause the spring doesnt have enough pressure and you run the risk of chattering valve train or worse slamming ye old piston into ye old valve.
valve meet piston, piston meet valve
BOOM then you bend stuff and your screwed.

if it is a stock 502 from merc racing or mercruiser, they are easy to find and relatively inexpensive, can call Jegs and or summit and get a set of valve springs, retainers, keepers pretty cheap
