Okay so like everything else on the baja that has been replaced, the next thing on the list is the entire steering system.
Presently ye old dookie mobile has a rack and pinion setup with the power assist setup from mercury.
I realize with twins in the 400 each HP range I SHOULD have full hydraulic steering but alas I feel that the money for the steering on this particular boat is definately not worth investing cause the boat at this point is worth more in parts than it is as a whole.
Im faced with a decision that by looking around online cant not find too much information on.
Seems teleflex has basically bought up all other competitors in the marine steering market so that is basically who you use if you want anything with cables.
Eddie marine is the only one that I see that has any type of teleflex systems that are approved for twin IO setups.
Their prices on a rack and pinion setup vs a rotary helm are within 5 dollars of each other so trying to determine which unit is better than the other by price is out of the question.
I would like to go with the best cable/power assist system out there. I plan on replacing everything from the steering wheel, bezel, helm, cable and the power assist unit back at the tie bar /tiller arm for the starboard drive that has their brazil valve that the power steering pump is plummed into.
My question and reason for bringing up this discussion is what do you guys have in your boats? What did your manufacturers think was sufficient.
Do you like it?
Do you trust it more importantly?
Honestly the one time I went to launch the baja last year I backed off the trailer in the water and went to turn the wheel and the whole steering system was locked up tighter than a moose's butt. That scared me for a minute until I realized Hey I have twins I can dock this thing with no steering but regardless was nervewracking with alot of traffic at the ramp and all the stupid ramp tricks that happen around noon on a saturday.
I dont know which one to purchase either a rotary helm or a rack and pinion.
I see both units from eddie marine come with some sort of clutch assembly to prevent any violent movements in the steering and so it says it will hold your steering straight if you have some sort of engine problems where the boat wants to not keep going straight.
(as a side note, when I locked up a motor that boat ripped to the right like lightning and there was no way in living hell you could have prevented that steering system from going , im lucky I still have my fingers on my hands)
So if you had to replace your steering systems in your boat, what would you replace it with?
Rack and pinion?
Rotary hub
screw it and go full hydraulic and let your wife take your testicles and sell them to a science lab?
Thanks guys
Jason
