Saleen367 is right, anytime that I ship something out and the customer has put Ave instead of St on a shipping order, I get charged for it. Becomes a real hassle at the end of the week, no way to charge the customer back for thier mistakes.

As for the DIMM weight (dimensional weight) that is funny. I'll have someone come in w/ a package that only weighs 5 lbs, but the size of box they found measures out to be an oversize rated at 30 lbs. Guess what, they get charged like it was a 30 lb item.

His comment on refusal, if you don't like the way it is delivered, send it back. I know it can be a pain, but sometimes there is no other way. If i get a package at my store that I don't think it will make it. I'll tell the customer I can't send it like that (then i make some $$ off of packaging it myself :)

I never use UPS. I gave them one too many chances to earn my business but they just don't care! I now use FedEx ground for all large packages and USPS for the small ones. The people at FedEx are always happy to see me and treat me like they want my business. Not to mention, they are almost always cheaper then UPS and can handle larger packages as well. Oh and the FedEx online calculator is right on while the UPS one was always off by a few bucks. Then the UPS counter started closing from 11am to 3pm for "lunch". WTF is that?

They wear brown because they aint worth a sh#t :D

as a little follow up - like I said earlier I've been usinf USPS for all my shipping. they normalize the address when I type it in - change it to a 9 digit zip, give me delivery confirmation and alloe me to insure and they ship worldwide.

In addition shipment to canada got crazy with UPS - they were demanding $30.00 from recipients of products - for instance I shipped a $19.50 tshirt to one guy and UPS wanted another $30 in customs fees - but the USPS does not demand such a fee - what's up with that?

and by the way: comments made here by folks that blame poor packing are dead on and I agree - however this particular package that was destroyed was very well packed and take it from me - I know what good packing is.

I have been in distribution for the last 15 years. I have seen a lot of changes happen with both UPS and FedEx. UPS has done a lot to clean up their act, but they still handle a lot of packages and stuff happens. FedEx Ground is still basically the RPS package system and it is not that great. The transit times are not even close to comparable. The old FedEx system that is now called FedEx Express is the best in the world. If you need a package overnight no one does it better and more reliably than FedEx. Both have their issues, but I would ship slow boat packages via UPS and the stuff I need immediately via FedEx.

Great thread.

I was all Fed Ex (UPS was tough) until I moved a state away. FedEx became 'instant too many problems - especially with the drivers - attitudes, walking into the house without knocking! Can you believe that? I crapped myself. You ever turn around at 7:30 pm at the dinner table and see a FedEx guy standing there? OMG! No knock, no nothing.

UPS - instant best buddies - we have three regulars that come to my work that are great. They have personally fixed what could have been major screw ups by us or our suppliers. Ok, the management locally is not to good but the drivers even handle these problems for us.

USPS - 3 Old ladies - sorry - no cyl heads or other big $ stuff to them. If i give them a 10lb package they almost fall over. Note: Best for Canada shipments though.

Anyway - anything is only as good as the people that work there. Find the best you can and ALWAYS GET INSURANCE FOR FULL VALUE AND WITH GOOD DOCUMENTATION!!!!!

Jeff: Go to the Canada mail website and look for links on shipping there. They impose a pretty big charge to the receiver for out of country shipments. It's a percentage of the value and remember, if US dollar value is stated, they get slammed. They have to pay this no matter who delivers it. I feel bad for the Canadians in this respect.

Jeff,
Good luck with USPS. My guess is you'll use them until you have your first claim. Then you'll be back to UPS or FedEx. USPS takes about 4-6 months to pay claims, if they pay. We're still waiting on a $500 claim from 3 years ago on a Canadian shipment.

The GST (goods & services tax) in Canada is charged by UPS. The Canadian Govt requires this. USPS is the US govt, so they can do whatever they want. They're "supposed" to charge it, but many don't. In addition, some areas of Canada have additional taxes, like HST and others. UPS is a company vs govt, so they have to follow the govt's regulations.

I think it all depends on what you ship. if it's B2B, Fed Ex is good, so I hear. If it's B to consumer, UPS is hard to beat. USPS is good, but when you get any sort of volume, it's not worth the extra effort, and UPS and FedEx offer other advantages (like equipment to use) that make it much more efficient.

UPS...grrr

Excellent topic Jeff!

I used CanPost/USPS in the beginning to ship all of my products. It was comparable to couriers and ALWAYS reliable + minimal paperwork + no cross-border hassles on my end. (because we're dealing with gov't. agencies) Then things started getting busier and it was a relief to have my packages picked up. The UPS 'Connect' software is kinda cool too, AFTER you get used to it...but the paperwork! We're talking several pages per package w/UPS as opposed to 30 seconds/ one mesely (sp?) form with the CP/ USPS partnership.

So anyway, my horror story is as follows: Customer orders a set of tabs and like all of us, wants them for the following weekend of boating. No problem, out they go via UPS. I get a call in a few days from my customer who says that I must have shipped the wrong package because he received stationary from Office Depot. I explained that since I was the one shipping from MMDI there was NO WAY that I shipped out office supplies. He sent me pictures of the box he rec'd. with my original UPS waybill on it! I couldn't believe it! I immediately called UPS cust. service and they said, "Sure, we'll put a trace on the package but it'll take up to ten days". WTF? TEN DAYS? NO WAY IS THIS GUY GOING TO MISS ANOTHER WEEKEND WITHOUT TABS. So I immediately sent out another set the fastest way possible and in a few days followed up w/ UPS as to their progress in tracing my misdirected package. They told me that there was no record of a trace! Unbelievable! (I was initially told that my tracking number was also to be used as my trace number in this circumstance) GRRRRR!

So anyway... somebody, somewhere has the heaviest set of file folders known to mankind! I imagine that the look on the face of the person who was supposed to receive office supplies would've been priceless. WTF are these?

I'm not sure if I'll ever get them back but they were insured and I am quite happy to revert back to the Canadian and US postal system because they rock!

I feel much better now... :yak:

P.S. No issues with damages because I pack them as if it were coming to me.

I quess all the carriers have problems look what Fed Ex did to my prop on the way the Throttle up this winter. After about 2 1/2 weeks of trying to find my prop the thing showed up at my front door in a differant box. This pic only shows part of the damage. Fed Ex did pick up the tab for the damage and the second shipping fees. Which was a major pain in the A@#! Off course Throttle Up made it look like new :)

I had a lower shipped back from FL to MI, had a double custom super packed box made for it, taped the crap out of it and when it showed up there was no box, just the shipping label taped to the side of the now cracked case and busted skeg. when I tried to make a claim they said it was not packed right.

In both cases the original packaging was destroyed from improper handling. The prop was reboxed and returned. The lower unit was shipped as is probably because it was too large to rebox or
somebody figured it would travel fine as is.

Jeff, Im with you.. I NEVER ship ups.

We will only ship USPS Priority mail with delivery confirmation. That is how I sent your Dash items over to Mitch. I have been Shipping using USPS for over 5 years and only have had 2 problems. Not damage, Just taking a little longer than they should of with the Priority mail service. Usually 3 days tops. Best I remember the 2 problems I had for some reason took around 5 to 7 days. But they got there. NO DAMAGE!

I just recieved a package full of 350 watt computer power supplies. they were all smashed to about 1" thick. Looks like they were ran over by a forklift or semi truck. Then UPS repackaged it in a new box, stuck the old shipping labels on and then delivered them like nothing happened. i was pissed

UPS

Jeff,

I sent out two heat exchangers for repair and both came back damaged. I sent the one back to the shop who rebuilt it, and they ate the cost to repair it again!
Guess what happened when it came back? It was damaged again!!!! These exchangers were packaged very well and there is no excuse for the damage that was done to this box. These were only shipped to New Jersey. I'm glad they did not have to go to far or I'm sure they would have been a total loss.

We looked at DHL just before they bought Airborne. They bought Airborne kind of in the middle of us negotiating. Their prices were good, but they closed lots of locations in the buyout and even our rep lost her job. So, I wasn't real keen on going with them. If there are personnel issues, the service can't be that good. I'm sure they'll get it all ironed out and be fine, but I wasn't willing to work through it with them. Post your results if you find anything out about them.
