Maybe this thread should read "think twice about a Baja". :(

After receiving delivery of my 30 Outlaw I have come across more and more things that are wrong with it as time goes by. Seems like everytime I get a chance to use it, I come across something new that should have been fixed before it ever left the factory in Bycus OH. :angry1:

What I find even more perplexing is the fact that these boats are shipped from the factory without ever undergoing a quality control check. And if by some chance they are, how can this many items get overlooked?
How can a company as big as Baja expect to have repeat customers with quality issues like this? Good question I think.

Having said that, I do like the boat, its many amenities (if you order up the AC/DC galley), reasonable cockpit space and its awesome acceleration w/HO's.
It does not handle the big waves and rough waters like I thought it would though. I have had the pleasure of riding in a 33 Outlaw as well and there really is no comparison IMO. Whether its the 3' of hull or the increased mass, I'm not sure. Either way, I'd choose the 33 if given the option again. It rides more like the 25 than the 33.

For the money, the 30 is not even an option unless you want to make a dozen trips back and forth for warranty issues.

I'd give it a 9 for style and 3 for quality.

wow, sorry to hear about your problems, my last boat before the 29 i have now was an H2X, which I bought brand new from marine max, I had several problems with the boat, all minor stuff that the dealer fixed, hope you have good luck with you new boat,

Good luck getting your issues resolved. Has to be frustrating with the cost of a new boat, and to have a number of problems. Ezpecially, if they could have/should have caught them, before it ever left the factory.

I should state that Baja as well as the dealer has called and told me everything would be made right. :)

What I don't understand is why they ship them like this to begin with.

Yeah they ship them dirty. Dealer setup covers detailing which I failed to realize and did it myself. No big deal ... very clean now.

I know some will think that most of the issues are shipping related. But keep in mind that not often are tractor trailers with 30' boats on them, parked next to a paint booth so paint overspray can attach itself to the drives and swim platform.

Not to mention the numerous small cosmetic stuff that should be corrected at Bycrus.

Not bitchin here ... but maybe Baja or Brunwick should peek into their quality control dept.

My 2004 29Ol has been a real pleasure almost no problems at all from delivery on, from fit and finish to how it preforms to the colors (I would have gotten these colors if I would have ordered from factory). VERY HAPPY. I did not order this boat from the factory bought it off the lot. Now my last boat I ordered from baja from the factory had all kinds of problems from fit and finish to the engine. It was a 2001 272 496ho. It was almost the last baja i ever owned. the white windshield was screwed in sideways the non skid was a mess, it had stress cracks , the headliner was falling down trim tabs did not work screwed the bolts from the windshield thru the headliner so the cabin leaked, the anchor locker leaked, flaws in the gel , sawdust and shoddy work everywhere. The motor leaked oil everywhere etc...Baja did eventually make it right because I went nuts! Hell I feel your pain you should be pissed!! I vowed not to EVER order another boat from BAJA ever again I wanted to shop till I found one that passed the test. Seems like when you order a boat from baja they just slap it together, Saleen I have been there and i know others who have had the same problems. Makem make it right you deserve it because you paid for it!

i bought one of the first 85 scarab 1's in transit back in 85. similar circumstances .i wanted it more than i ever wanted anything . when it came in it was virtually destroyed in shipping and stuff never stopped comming apart in the 3 years i owned it. the factory referred me back to my dealer. we repaired stuff til i sold it. that is not the way it needs to be. thankfully they are not selling scarabs anymore probably because the warranty dept was the busiest dept at the plant. my point is simple . one or two bad apples is understandable . a steady diet ????? maybe they should try and cover more of the family bowrider part of the market like wellcraft is doing. performance boating is demanding . you can't build a 30 ft go fast the way you would build a 19 foot bow rider. as i contemplate my next purchase i am using this site to help ensure that i will receive many years of enjoyment from the boat . now if there only was an alternative to mercury marine !!!!!!!

Jeff,
This post concerns me, Out of curiosity, will the dealer take the boat back and or put you into a 33?
Why would they?

I ordered a 30 and thats what I have. Its not the dealers fault that I don't think its worth the money.

Baja should be concerned that they are selling these at near or above 33 prices for much less of a boat IMO.
I love the styling, but looks only gets you so far.

To top things off, the dealer's secretary called me yesterday to let me know that they screwed up on pricing out extended warranty's that I purchased. They claim that instead of pricing two engines they mistakenly priced only one. Thus my extended warranty is only good on one engine.
They said they would honor it if I brought it in for service at their shop only.
Amazingly I have a purchase agreement that shows that I bought them, regardless of price. Now I have to take on that problem as well as the boat issue.

Now if I piss of the dealer demanding my warranty be honored, will the Baja work get done?
Not to mention the trailer was all screwed up. Brake lights don't work, no belly spare, and wrong wheels and vinyl graphics on it.

Time will tell, but the situation gets stickier as time goes on.

I spend $125k and get nothing but headaches. Yeah, I know, cry me a river right?

Hell, I would contact Baja and ask how they want you to ship the boat back to them, so they can fix the problems once and for all :angry1: . If they would want the dealer to do it, have them call to make the appointment and most importantly-----A time schedule for repairs!!! The Squeeky Wheel does get the grease....
... especially if it's on a trailer that was delivered differently than ordered

The 38 special I work on had regular bravos behind 525SC's.

The drives had broken so many times that the owner called Baja to see why the regular Bravo's where installed. They said they that "they should have the upgraded Bravos - maybe yours got switched at a marina." Not happy with that the owner called again and had them look up the build sheet - that person said," yup that boat had regular Bravos installed for some reason."

He wasn't too happy - to say the least. How much do you think a loaded 38 Special with 525SC's cost?

Well, he spent the money this spring to put on a pair of the X's.

"squeaky wheel gets the grease".

as it relates to the extended warranty on one engine - that is quite frankly the dealers proplem.

demand the paperwork on both - otherwise I am sure Brett (d-hlaw) will be happy to drop the hammer on them.

In addition, there are lemon laws in every state, but they do not apply to boats - however if you're willing to invest a few hundreds $$$ in attorney's fees I am sure Brett will again draft succinct letter to Baja and the dealer regarding repairs.

what dealers forget is that it's a royal pain to transport boats around and east into our work time. They treat your personal time as if it were worthless.

I for one would get serious about a formal complaint and make sure you've documented everything.

Why didn't the dealer check your boat out closer before he delivered it to you? It is not all that unusual that any manufacturer will ship things slightly less than perfect to a dealer. The dealer has a responsibility for making it 100% correct before you ever see it!

Like it or not, most dealers get product with problems.

I was lucky enough to have vacation scheduled the week it arrived. So when I was told the boat would show up, I asked that they call me so I could take some pictures and see the graphics for the 1st time I had chose.

Upon arriving, the dealer was under the impression that I wanted it that day even though it was a Wed. and I was using my 25 until the 30 arrived. I've come to find out someone had money down on the 25 and the guy wanted it that night.
A quick water test and I was on my way with a boat that should have stayed with the dealer for at minimum 3-4 days.

This was my 2nd new boat and like an idiot I assumed that the boats were shipped like the 25 I got from Hawkeye - near flawless ... my bad. Live and learn.

Instead of continuing to complain, just bring the boat back for the necessary cosmetic repairs. As far as buying a 30 which you say you dont like and wish you bought a 33, no one can help you with that issue. I would tell the dealer your not happy and have them take it back on a trade for a 33OL.

I am very satisfied with the 30OL (as with others that I know that own this boat) I boat in the ocean in some mean chop, and I come out of a 25OL. Im happy.

Thank GOD for Big Thunder Marine

this is how it started out out for me

Big Thunder made good on all the problems I had
(yes it was a pain in the A$$)

I don't know if my next boat will be a Baja after all the problems or not at this point.

Now, I love the boat, but it did take some time.

Thank you BIG THUNDER MARINE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I share in some of Saleen's frustrations. I have had a lot of piddly problems which I have tried to take care of myself. The fact is if I take it back to the dealer, they will most likely fu*# it up more. They certainly will make a mess of the boat. As far as gel coat flaws, I've got plenty of nice little scratches and chips, mainly interior where the monkeys at the factory making minimum wage dug things up when they slapped things together. Now here's the problem: These chips and flaws can not be repaired without making things worse. You think a jerkoff dealer is going to take apart an interior cabinetry setup to repair a gouge without making things worse? I've got a chip on one of my steps. You think they are going to separate the hull/deck joint to repair this? No. The factory saw the mistake and wadded some 5200 in the hole which should look nice in a year or two when it yellows. If dealers were careful and could fix anything could they have it done before the next year? My dealer could not even figure out how to fix the speedo (tubes were split open).

The thing here is major inconvenience. The season is short enough without having to let your boat sit uncovered at a dealers lot only to get rained on before they get around to tracking their muddy shoes through the interior to fix a chip two weeks later.

My advise: Fix what you can yourself with gelcoat patch. It comes in easy to use tubes. As far as the overspray, that should buff off. I know it sucks to have to do things to a new boat. The old saying rings true: If you want it done right, do it yourself. I've talked to Baja about some small issues, they could give a flying fu#@. The people there are clueless as well.

I love the boat and I'm sure after you iron out the wrinkles you will too. Baja is a damn solid boat with unbeatable styling and appeal. I'm sure the other boat manufactures have the some of the same issues. I'll be happy to share issues with you if it will help you correct some of your problems. :)
