Since I destroyed my engine hatch or now known as "LID"
I need to start planning on making a mold and laying some fiberglass.
I have 2 choices.
First, make a completely flat hatch and rivet 2 snorkle scoops (Harwood or the like) and then bondo the edges, sand smooth, prime and paint
OR
Make a hatch with 2 of the raised flat boxes with the angled fronts like the old 87 scarabs or the apache's had (Miami vice race hatches)
If I decide to go with the 2 snorkle scoops, anyone know where I can pick up 2 pretty cheaply?
I dont want to start in the 600-900 bucks for this to be completed.
I can do ALL the fiberglass work and mold work for about 300-400 bucks give or take (scarab race hatch style)
Any thoughts on this?
What do you think would look better, the snorkle scoops or the race hatch look?

Scoops... the cons are that your wife will lose her sun deck, and as I found out they make it very tricky to get to the stern cleats to prepare for docking. If you don't need them, then I'd save the money and go without.

Okay for the one with the blower scoops get 2 of these and basically bolt them down to a flat fiberglass hatch and cut out holes in them under the scoops like most offshore type hatches are.

Well whatever I do im going to core it so that anyone can just stand on them and not have a problem with breaking them or what not.
The downside yes is she will loose her sunpad but she can take a towel, lay out on the front of the boat, she can lay out in the back seat, she can lay out on the swim platform or she can get one of those foam lounge chairs and tie it to the stern cleat and float around in the water and get sun.
So she has some options.
I also believe the boat will be faster with fiberglass hatches and not this freakin SPONGE on the back.
My hatch being soaked with water completely and being 3/4 inch plywood (soaked as well) probably weighs in about 250-300 lbs.
Took 4 of us to muscle it up there (deez pleeze will tell you about that nightmare story)
If I can cut about 200 lbs out of this thing right on the back end over the engines, It might plane out better and run overall nicer (at least that is what I am hoping for)
AND I can get some air in there for baja never really seemed to worry about getting some fresh air in the compartment.

I think the drive for me to get up there, undo your hatch, put it in the back of the dually and come all the way back down here, would be cheaper for me to call OL and just have them send me one!
Hows it going Jeff?
Come on with your racing background, dont you have any in's or something somewhere?

Like Rasin Bran dude
I NEED 2 SCOOPS

I dont think your motors need that much air flow. My blower motor in the Checkmate ran fine without a scoop. If you want to find out just crack your hatch about 2 inches while your running. you prob wont notice any increase at all.

downsides to scoops....

1. loose sunpad for wife lounging
2. people cant sit back there and hang out
3. you loose the stripper pole (girls stand ing on the sunpad hanging on to the arch)
4. you will need a new cockpit cover.

Maybe you should just put a couple extra vents on the sides if you are that worried about it.

Well Mark
First dont have a cover at all
Second, No pole for the girlies. People can sit on swim platform or in the seats ect or down here, we hang in the water cause it is so STUPID hot.
I hear what your saying though but none of those factors really affect me at the present time.
Hell normally I have 3 people on board, Wife, Rick and myself.
No one wants to go for a ride on it.
(probably cause there are about 700 thousand GUNS down here so why would you want to ride on a baja)

Jay, if you are going to do it I think you should go with the scoops. I think they would go best with the lines of your boat.
