Very possible.

I just talked to the Dyno Operator and he is going to call the dyno manufacturer to see if this is the deal.

Always the part you don't know about that kicks your butt.

After this, though, I will know a lot about it.

FYI: I put a water psi guage on the water crossover. It read 30psi at 4500-4800 rpm !!! Yup, I will definately being installing the Merc water psi regulator that I bought for it a while ago.
What style of pump are you using. I can't see in the picture the water pump. Are you using a thermostat?

I agree on the 30 psi. But only on a semi-restricted water circulation system.

Where does the Merc pressure regulator mount?

Sorry for the long posts on this - it sometimes helps me think things thru by re-reading everything I mumble about. + People can learn thru my tribulations.
CFM Tech, Don't ever apologize for your method or length of ANY of your thread replies. Your knowledge, information, insight, etc is priceless.

Ok, now that I have written that would Bill (Kidnova) please go over and poke CFM tech's head with a pin----------it's about ready to explode. :laugher:

All Kidnovaing aside, :laugher: You have helped many understand some of the dark unknowns that lurk inside that expensive thing called the MOTOR.

When you do arrive at the final destination called-------let's mount it in the boat and go sea trial this thing, please promise us that you will share the ingredients of the motor recipe.

rotax,
You're right...cfm, plus cstraub, rmbuilder {great stuff from rm often on the other site too}, they're pro's and full of great info and best part is they're all willing to help out. Plus all the guys on the site that do their own mech work and then share their experiences {successes and mistakes} with everyone here. One example for me is BT. If he did'nt suggest that I get an oil temp guage, my ZZ would no doubt be toast by now.

Ok, I've puffed the guru's up enough now. But it's all true.

rotax, you do the pin thing to cfm...but be careful. His head will KABOOM and you'll get blasted with cranks and gears, it'll be like shrapnel :laugher: :laugher:

A crossover with no bypass. I have a restrictor in the t-stat housing with approx 1" orifice in the middle to let the water thru.

Now, amazing part. When I ran the dry headers I kept the same cooling system by running a long hose from the t-stat cover to outside the building. The only thing not flowing water was the exhaust of course.

25psi was max water pressure during these runs.

Therefore water psi dropped 5psi by not running it thru the exhaust manifolds.

Looks like the exhaust is creating water backpressure too!!!

The holes releasing water into the exhaust are not that large in the risers I have looked at.

A note here is that automotive engines are designed to have around 60 PSI of pressure out of the pump. This is to help the coolant keep in contact with the metal as it flows through the engine. Certain areas such as around exhaust ports/valves can create so much heat without proper pressure steam will form preventing the coolant from scrubbing across the metal and removing heat. I believe thats why Merc has retained the circulation pump and is now offering more engines with enclosed cooling systems standard.

Also some of the aftermarket crossovers don't appear as if they could properly distribute coolant equally to both banks. Some that might could be easly compromised by fittings attaching the inlet hose connections that would cause unequal flow.

Heh, I just noticed this thread now has a '5 Star' rating.

Is this so everyone see's how I'm getting beat up over such a simple project ?

:laugher: :laugher: :laugher: :laugher: :laugher: :laugher: :laugher: :laugher: :laugher: :laugher: :laugher:

Hell you think that 5 star rating is great. . .you should see the Odds in Vegas that this thing isn't done/dyno'ed by Christmas!!! :laugher:

It's rumored some KID in in Central NY took December 24th at 20 to 1 that it would be! :D

Just ribbing yeah. . .did you send that bolt out? I'll be sure we give you some "special" pricing!!!! And if I tell you 6 weeks, double that okay!!!

Chris

6 weeks - double that?

I'll be in some serious carp if it does. W/D's are starting to buy the spacer, my machine shop shop that used to make the spacers made the bolts too. They said no more spacers no more bolts.

My hair is falling out at an unstoppable pace.

If you get these bolts done quicker and get a fair price I'll post final results of the motor.

These keyboards can get you sometimes.

Carp !?!?!? Who's disgusting?? :laugher: :laugher: :laugher:

This engine thing has gotcha go'n. Ya gotta relax...hey, try some of that yoga chitt. A couple of JD's, light a cig, sit on the floor with your legs crossed, then sing that yoga song. Ya know, the one that goes "Hhhhhmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm". Then more JD's.

I can't attest to the affect of the Hhhmmmmm thingy. But the JD's will relax :drnk

Discussion starter · #196 ·
I'd try those things but:

I'm old and too stiff to sit in those positions.

JD? Only if it's a brand of coffee :laugher: :laugher:

So, to relax I do the following:

Go outside , have a but or two
Come back in
Turn off lights
Lie down on couch for a 1/2 hr or so
Put in a Godsmack, Lincoln Park, Metallica, or etc CD
Turn volume up to just before distortion
Put sub box remote in hand so I can juice it
Close my eyes
Think about engine parts - current projects and/or new ones I want to develop

Ahhhhh, refreshing !!!!! :winker: :winker: :winker:

J D = Jack Decaf :winker:

"old" is just a state of mind. At least that's what I tell the wife. But you're right, bending into the pretzel position probably is difficult....never tried it myself.

Ok, enough relaxation chitt....have a cig and get the damm engine done so we can see if ya done the right thing ;)

I found a decent upgrade to the 502/502. Bring's it to 550hp.

I'll post it when I'm done with this and use it as a comparison.

Now you relax . :laugher: :laugher: :laugher: :laugher: :laugher: :laugher: :laugher:

HHhhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm :angry1:

Ok, Chris...you got it. No wait, better idea....we'll just set that engine on him and then both smack him. Noth'n else go'n on with that engine......is there? :laugher:  :p:
