I had to put my '01 chevy 1/2 ton in the shop for a little repair work after a guy backed into the driver side of it.

I went to rent a car yesterday and the rental place had a Ford 150 there. I've been thinking about a new truck lately (used '03 or '04), and this was a good opportunuity for me to drive/try a Ford for a few days.

It's an '05 4x4 with 22K miles on it. It seems kind of doggy so I popped the hood to see what engine is in it. I saw nothing telling me what engine it has.

I know Ford has the 4.6 and 5.4 and would like to know which one this truck has. I'm thinking it might be the 4.6, given the power, or lack there of

Can anyone tell me what to look for? Not trying to start a Ford/Chevy/Dodge war here. Just wanna know what's under the "hatch". BTW, it is very quiet go'n down the highway, lots more quiet than my Chevy.

Thanks

Could be both, the new 5.4 isn't impresive either. Suposed to be 300hp, but the new design must have gained wieght. My 01, Ford I'm willing to bet, would out axcelerate the new 05's!

But, the fit and finish of the Ford is awsome.

For some reason though, the hieght of the rear tailgate is stupid!

The box and tailgate are way high. I'm just over 6 ft. and the gate is almost up to my shoulders.

It's gotta have the 4.6. Just seems to have squat for power. Sounds like Total Advantage might be able to shed some light on the power subject.

It is put together nicely ....probably made in Canada ;)

It's a 4.6 sohc with a 3.73 axle

I see by the VIN it's a Supercrew 4 x 4 , and that's a lot of truck for that motor to push.

We don't even order it at our Dealership, it's a "bitch wanna be truck".

The 5.4 is the only way to go with that set-up.

Thanks Tim,
It's from a rental place {Enterprise} so they probably ordered the 4.6's to save a buck.

Tq seems to be the issue with it. Can you tell me what the tq and hp differences are beteen the 4.6 and 5.4? Also what about projected mileage? Towing the boat up the hills around here is a problem. But a 4x4 is also my daily driver so I need to stay away from a gas hog.

Other than lack of balls, it really is a nice ride.

Thanks - Bill

4.6 is 231 hp @ 4750 rpm with 293 lb-ft tq @ 3500 rpm

5.4 is 300 hp @ 5000 rpm with 365 lb-ft-tq @ 3750 rpm

The 25% increase in HP & TQ in the 5.4 makes a huge difference. As you know it takes X amount to get the entire rig moving and the last 25% is where you get the preformance from......just like a boat.

The EPA says the milage rating is about 14 city to 18 hiway...........My clients tell me thier getting 15 to 16 on average.

Hey Kid,

I have an 04 with a 5.4. It's real impressive on the Highway, and from about 60-80km/hr and up. I can run with my 252 at 140km/hr and not even blink an eye, real solid and no sway.

The box is high, too high to lift a cooler or case of beer over, kinda stupid that way, but it does help when carrying a sled, or sheets of drywall as it makes up for the bed length.

I went from a 98 Chev Silverado to this, and there's not much I don't like in it, but hole shot is definately not there. Gas is ok I guess, same ole with V8's nothing krazy in that department. The interior is awesome, really like the stick, and tons of room - we got the 2+2 cab - SuperCrew I think it's called.

Another thing I don't like is the stupid seat belt alarm.. fak. goes off every mile.

Bill,

Please say it ain't so, converting to the darkside?!?!?! Just kidding... here is my .02 if you do not mind. First, don't rule out the GM. My 04 is A LOT better then my 01 was. Much better ride, a hell of a lot quieter, tighter fit, you name it, all aorund much better. Now, I can't believe I am saying this, but... a fiend of mine just got an 05 Ford Crew Cab 350 Single rear wheel, 4X4. I took it for a ride today. Very nice truck. Very solid and quiet. Ford crew is a lot smaller then my Chevy crew though. I think the Fords are a better looking truck too. Now, Why a half ton? I know you think your boat is small, but considering the big hills you tow on, I think a 3/4 ton would be a better choice. Correct me if I am wrong about the Ford, but at least on the GM, when you move to 3/4 ton, you bet a better engine, better tranny, stronger frame, bigger/better brakes and so-on. I can only assume that Ford does the same on their Super Duties. I know you use it as a daily driver and want some fuel economy, but there is a big safety factor to consider for the towing aspect of what you do. Also, at least where I live, the 3/4 ton has better resale then a 1/2 ton, again, that is where I live, not sure about NY. That is part of the reason I bought my dually. Do I need a 1 ton truck to tow a 24 foot boat, hell no, but I like the fact that when I am taking it on trips, the truck does not have to work at all and if I were to get into a panic situation, I have enough mass and brakes to control it. My 3/4 ton was much better then my half ton, and my 1 ton is that much better then my 3/4 ton. Just some food for though, like you not trying to debate what brand is better.

I had a 98 with a 4.6, and a 99 with a 5.4. I used to pull the same travel trailer with both, and really couldn't tell the difference, they both pulled it fine. I didn't have a lick of trouble with either one. The 98 I put 59k on, and the 99 I put 122k on.

I had a 98 Supercab 4x4 with the 5.4 pulled 6k with it consistantly...no problems at all!! It had 190K on it when I traded it in on the 00 Excursion!! I miss it alot of the time!! Cuda said it best....Either way you cant go wrong!!
Good luck!!

Some body, wether it be Ford, or Chev, or GMC, or even Toyota, has got to build a super comfy 1/2 ton, with a diesel!!!! !!

Especaily the Ford F150! The size of it alone warrents the torque of a diesel! IMHO.

This comming spring I plan to sell my Sun. When that happens, I won't be worried about towing anything. But I still need a bed for work. So For people like me, who drive 50 000 km a year, fuel is an issue. If there was a 1/2 ton diesel truck, all loaded up that drove nice, I'd be there! I'm sure every person who tows anything would also look at one. Thats two types of buyers that a diesel 1/2 ton apeals too!

I know people say just buy the 3/4 ton, but I'm sorry, don't need that much weight!

TA & Duke - Thanks for the info.

Sounds like I should test drive a 5.4 before making any decisions.

Thanks again
Kid,
You're right, you should go test drive the new F150.
I just picked up my new '05 F150 FX4, 5.4L, 3.73 gear, super cab, and I'm very pleased with it so far. The styling is great, and the ride is absolutely awesome.....very quiet in the cab at interstate speeds.
You guys are correct about the hole shot though, it just does not jump off the line. Oh well, probably for the best anyway.
Having said all that, I would love to have an F250 diesel, but it's cost prohibitive for no more often than I tow. Just my .02
