Ok, once we move into our new digs in the spring I've been thinking about getting a dog. I owned a German Shepard about 20 years ago and her life was relegated to mostly living outside in a dog box on a chain because she'd run away. I took her in as a stray and my ex didn't want a dog in the house.

I've got a few in mind...

Malamut, Samoyed or Golden Retriever although I'm leaning toward a Malamut..

We would not take the dog on the boat on weekends so the dog would be left alone overnight.

What do you folks do that have dogs and need to leave them for a day or two, get a neighbor to let them out - what?

thanks in advance...

Would you really leave your young kid home for a weekend and have the neighbors look in on them.....

If the new family member is not welcome on the boat then it is not really a wanted family member.

And I don't want anyone bringing up that they leave their 'TOY whatever' at home because anything under 25 lbs...... is not really a dog!!! :p:

PS...... don't count out a nice Lab :star:

Definately get a golden retriever. Best dog in the world. I have one right now and he is awesome. And why not take him on the boat with you? Mine comes with me every time...even when we overnight. When he has to pee, he gets in the water and goes. Never goes in the boat. And if it's the seats you are worried about, check out this picture and tell me what you see.

no -never!!!

we just duct tape them and chain them up in the basement - doesn't everyone?

Jeff,

The key is to get a dog and spend the time to train it. If your training is succesful then your efforts will be rewarding. You'll never have a problem finding someone to watch them. Your new house will come with new neighbors and some people think that the best pet is the neighbors pet. I too would look at a Lab.

Cads03, I think we all know that Jeff has the cleanest boat on the water, a tad anal maybe. The last thing he wants to do is vaccuum pet hair all day.

We built a new house about 5 years ago. Its 6000 sq. ft on 5 acer out in the county and my wife wanted a dog if see was going to live in the county. My concern was what kind of damage a new dog could do. We bought a German Shepard form Harrison K-9 which is a European Shepard with a Schutzen II training. This is the best money I have ever spent. Great with kids, has never done any damage to our home and obedience like I never thought possible. Harrison is a first class place, you will have to spend two days at his facility in Aiken South Carolina learning some german commands and hand signal but you will leave there with a one of a kind dog. Prices range form 10k-45k with the average being 18K. Here is his web sight Harrisonk9.com PM me if you want more info.

Those wouldn't by chance be Scholle's dogs would they? I recognize Cumberland, the dogs and Brandon (and I think I see Jill as well) :) They take their dogs EVERYWHERE which isn't always a good thing.

We used to have a dog and he would either come with us on the boat or we'd have a neighbor watch him.

Jeff-
I have been kicking around the idea for around a year now. We've got 10 acres and a 16month old boy thus the reason I'd like to get a dog, for protection of the boy as they both grow up. We just built a 50X50 garage/shop and I'd probably build a run on the back side and put in a dog door for access for him/her during the day and on weekends either see if the neighbor could take feed him/her or have the dog boarded if we don't take him/her to the lake with us..

Jeff,we have 4 dogs. 2 pomaranians which weigh about
4-5lbs a piece,1 German Shepard which is the wifes dog all the way and a Rotweiler that is my baby.
Surprisingly the Rotweiler is my favorite because she is so loyal and obedient not to mention a brutal looking animal.
When we go out on the boat for a weekend my step daughter just stays at our house and takes care of the dogs. Other than that they just stay home if we are out on a day trip.

Don't rule out a Rotweiler, they are an awesome dog!!! :winker:
