I HAVE A 2001 29 POWERQUEST WITH TWIN 310, AND 135 HOURS ON IT.I AM TOLD I NEED BOTH MOTORS PULLED AND THE GIMBAL RINGS REPLACED.I WAS ALSO TOLD I COULD CHOOSE TO NOT PULL THE MOTORS, AND DRILL A HOLE IN EACH OUTDRIVE TO GAIN ACCESS AND THEN PUT A PLUG IN TO FILL THE HOLE.IS THIS A PROBLEM THAT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN IF I DON'T PUT HYDRAULIC STEERING ON.

if i am not wrong- the gimbal rigs are in the drives housings? with hyd steering it will help this problem .

as for the gimbal bearing that is in side the housing and need a special tool to pull them.

the gimbal itself is what the drive attaches too. and you have to pull the motors to have this done.

what ever you may need to have done i would absolutely not drill holes-who ever told you this ?????

do it right and have things done correctly is my advice

You either have to drill the 2 holes in the transom plate or pull the engines to gain access to the steer shaft pin nut.

Either way is fine, its just a matter of if you want to see the plastic plugs on the drive.

Are you going to do the work yourself? If not, my shop is in New Lenox (I-80 and Rt-30) and I am in the middle of off season pricing.

Put the hydraulic steering on it and forget about the problem.
the problem is important only if you are using the tiller arm for your steering.
The seal at the top of the upper tiller shaft will start to leak when the boat is pulled up on the beach and that part of the drive goes below the water line.

by the way - Obnoxus is a friend of mine and he does excellent work....

how many boat mechanics do you know that are on-line?

and I'll hopefully see him and his beautiful wife again at the Miami Beach boat show this year...

If gimbal rings are shot and need to be replaced, you have (3)options:
a) pull the motors for access to the nut from the inside
b) the Mercruiser method, where you drill a hole on each side of the top for access to the nut. Merc sells a kit where by you drill a hole on each side of the housing, then tap it, for install of a plastic plug. Holes allow you to chisel nut at the top. the nut has serations just for this. This is a royal pain in the azz.
c) company from OH, sells a kit where by you drill a series of holes on the face, then punch it out for access to the nut. Once you punch it out, there is a stainless cover plate that goes over it. i've never done this, so can't comment one way or another.

As far as the external steering, yes it will go along way to prevent this from happening again. However, with the HP you have, it is not absolutely necessary. But, you will need to pay attention to keeping the nuts on the u-bolts torqued. Even if you elect to add the hydraulic steering, you still need to correct what you have.

The bad news: Those rings alone go for aprox. $700-$800ea. Don't forget to get new nuts for the top, they can get beat up taking them out.
While you have it apart, it's a good time to replace bellows, if they haven't been done.

not tightening down the u-bolt periodically will assist in your gimbal wearing out. Then there is just the plain old fashioned TIME factor... it's aluminum... it wears out. There are many other factors that will aid in the wear process....

jumping your boat
turning your boat
excessive hp
hitting bottom, objects, etc...
