Well as some may or may not know i'm re-molding the dash on my 22 Stinger to fit monster gauges. The original dash was a tad small and wouldnt fit them...well the tach and speedo anyway. So i decided it would be cool to re-design it a tad. I havent been consistant in taking pics but heres a few to give you an idea of what it will look like in the end. Each of the 3 gauges on the side of the tach and speedo is tweaked a bit to face the driver. The tach and speedo are straight on First is the original dash. 2nd is what it looks like right now. the white parts of it are Durabond (like a bondo but for marine use) and there is a layer of glass ontop of it. I still need to sand/primer/sand/fill in gaps-divits/sand/primer/sand and paint!!!

heres what i did to get to where i'm at now....may give some of you other DIY'rs some ideas! :D

first thing is to cut wooden circles the size of the openings for the gauges. The speedo and Tach will be mounted on one flat piece of wood facing right at you. Each circle is positioned where i would want the gauge to sit and is temporarily supported useing wooden dowel rods and a hot glue gun.

Once i got the exact positioning of where everything will be, then i went to Wall-mart and got some stretchy material...in this case its the same material they use for basketball jersey's....i used 3M contact adhesive and you stretch the material over the form. I started from the inside and worked my way out in all directions.....take your time and it will come out looking good.

all glued down and trimmed the excess off all around. Once i got to this point its all glass work and sanding! You can brush on resin right over the material you stretched out and that will harden for your base form......from there its all about glassing layers and useing a filler material to shape and sand..... hope you enjoyed
:D

I will update when i get a chance....it is cold here and it takes a while for the garage to heat up sometimes! Dont want to ruin all my hard work with not having the resin cure right! :(

Ok update......last pics i posted was of the dash just after my first coat of fiberglass over the durabond i used to do some minor shaping with. Since then i have added two more layers of glass and sanded. After that i put a coat of white primer on it to show all the imperfections in the dash. Thats what you see the white parts. The red you see is glaze i used to fill in any low spots or pin holes. I sanded that out. Not all the red you see in the pic is glaze....the stuff stains white real good after i was done with the sanding with 320 grit i sprayed a coat of high build primer on it. Thats the gray you see now. I did that on Sunday night and am letting it dry. There are about 3 more little spots i need to fix before i can say the outside is done. From there i will be moving to the inside to re-inforce the dash so it doesnt crack from pounding in the water.

I do have to say though......i have built a few custom speaker box's like this for friends cars and trucks, but never anyting like this and so far its turning out better then i expected! I was worried about the angles not coming out right and all sorts of other issues i thought i would have with this, but its not bad at all. Stay tuned for more in the coming weeks as i get the boat ready for paintwork! Lets hope the weather doesnt get too cold around here cause my little heater in the garage cant keep up sometimes :(

Looks a lot better than some other boats with the gages out. Some look like the holes were cut by a 4 year old. Yours look great!!!!!
thanks...i actually cut the holes out small cause i knew i'd be doing alot of sanding back and forth.......i trial fit one gauge in the holes during construction to make sure i'm not glassing the holes smaller......so far they all fit like gloves expect for one that the roto-zip got away from me on......you dont notice it and wont see any of it when its all put together but if you look at the middle small gauge on the left hand side of the dash you can see the upper right hand side a bit screwy :( oh well :)

The fun part will be getting this whole dash over to the body shop for paint cause it aint gonna fit in the burban i dont think. Gonna have to bribe a friend with a pickup with a free ride on the boat! :D

Ok....ive been slacking off due to getting married and other projects around the house taking priority (did i just say that!!??) But heres where i'm at now......I ended up pinting the dash in my driveway since i couldnt get it to the paint booth cause everyone i know with a pickup was "busy" that day!!!! (now i know who my real friends are! :confused1 ) So down goes a big blue tarp and i sprayed the driveway down a bit with water to keep the dust away and off we go :D

Heres a peek at what it looks like :)
