The funny thing is the Commanding Officer usualy pays the biggest price even though he may have been eating lunch or doin somethin else than piloting the sub at the time. Usually take a lot of mistake by more than 1 person to let this happen. And it's usually the CO that qualifies all the people in the piloting party to do their jobs ..

But I am not surprised at what happend. I am a submariner and could tell you some f'd up chit. I'll throw up some pics of the boat I was on.

Awesome pictures!

I did some special work for the Navy and Raytheon many years ago on the then new version Mk 48 torpedo project. I was in one of the sub loading bays in Rd Island, and saw how fast those subs are! That place was definately James Bond material...

I think the speeds may be still classified...But is is mind boggling the speed of those things underwater...

And the torpedo speeds are even more incredible. But don't breath the torpedo's exhaust. It's cyanide gas...The fuel makes it's own oxygen, and is an external combustion engine...Very small. 800hp....

Supposedly Bay City, Mi has finally raised the funds required to bring the USS Edson Navy Destroyer to our growing city. It will be permanently anchored in the Saginaw River in Bay City as a floating museum. They have been working on this project for years and the latest news is that the ship could be towed/pushed here as early as Fall '05. I really can not wait. I think it is going to be incredible to have something like this right in the middle of downtown (which is split in half by the river). I plan to be out in the Bay to see this behemoth come in. I believe it no longer has any means of self propulsion, hence the tow/push. I will certainly let everyone know when it will take place....how about a Speedwake welcome convoy? Anyone interested??? Like I said though - not sure exactly when they are bringing her in.

Cuda your right. By the way....I can get you and Deb a tour of one of the subs up here in Kings Bay if you would like. We would have to plan it out a little ways to get you cleared, but it can be done. Maybe if ya have a job up in Jax we could plan somethin.... just a thought...

I was on the water to see the USS New Jersey being towed up the Delaware River,, and have seen it many times since , moored at Camden NJ..These old ships are truely majestic and intimidating. This boat was towed from Washington state i believe and arrived to much fanfare. Hope you get your boat, it sure will look good moored in the city.

I'd love to. I've always been fascinated with Navy ships. When dad was in the Navy, I loved going on his ships. :)

Cuda, if you get the chance, jump on it!!

I was absolutely awestruck at the technology applied by the Navy.

When I was doing work for the Navy and Raytheon, my mind was numbed. I had no idea. And this was almost 10 years ago!!

There are 10,000 things that we as citizens have NO IDEA of. And the rest of the world hopefully has no clue of as well. At least I hope that's still the case.

Even if you only get to see the conning tower, jump on it!!

Thanks CG for what you are doing!!

I love the USA!
