In 1985, I had the pleasure of being the gas man on a cup crew for Morgan Shephard. In 1986, while in Franklin, TN, I became acquainted with Sterling Marlin and with DW. In 1987 I gassed for Earnhardt at the Nashville Speedway. All are good guys, just with different personalities. In 85, you could feel the pressure in the garage area. It has since become much worse, based on the number of serious competitors and high $. Those guys probably earn their money more than most sports figures. One this NASCAR did then and I am sure still do, is not let anyone in the garage area after 6:00 pm and you can't get back in till 6:30 or 7:00 am. If not , the sponsors would expect you to be thrashing on the car 24 hours per day. Pulling a wagon with two cans of gas from the pit stall closest to turn one at Talledega to the Union 76 pump and back, during a summer day race on that hot asphalt, burned your feet. It looks fun, it is, but it is dam hard work.
Larry McReynolds was our crew chief. He went with Yates a couple years later.
