NASCAR has done what I would call a F**K UP and allowed this guy to win.....
They should have thrown him out along time ago!! This opens up a whole new can of whoop A## that makes everyone feel that they can be a bad boy and get away with it!
I think Martin was robbed!

Not that I am a big fan of Stewart (I'm not) but he did EARN the title. Even without the penalty, Martin would have been second in points. Give the guy a chance. Maybe he will mature a little this year.

For me it started when earnhardt senior got killed. He made some comments that I though were unneccesary at the time. Stuff about both senior and junior. Nothing derogatory but at the time it just showed that he was a self centered prick(in my opinion).

I was rooting for Mark too. I just objected to the idea that Nascar "gave" the championship to Stewart. Mark seems to be good people and would probably make a better spokesman for Nascar but bottom line it's about winning and the way to do that is to accumulate the most points. BTW, Earnhart senior was not noted (especially earlier in his career) for holding back his opinions either.

I agree 100% that Earnhardt was known for speaking his mind. I don't object to that, it was more the timing that aggravated me about Stewart. I can't deny that Stewart can drive a race car. I am just agreeing with some others here that I believe there are much better spokesmen for the sport.

I am just a casual NASCAR watcher but I have seen some of the things you guys are upset about. I can only say that at least it shows that skill/setup/tactics still mean more than politics and personalities. APBA and SBI have both been ravaged by guys getting caught up in their HUGE egos and hurting the sport to the exclusion of the racing. Although it is all about big money and sponsorship, at least when all was said and done the racing and points determine the champion. Plus the fact that you could not find a better man to win than Joe Gibbs-he is truly a great guy.

In 1985, I had the pleasure of being the gas man on a cup crew for Morgan Shephard. In 1986, while in Franklin, TN, I became acquainted with Sterling Marlin and with DW. In 1987 I gassed for Earnhardt at the Nashville Speedway. All are good guys, just with different personalities. In 85, you could feel the pressure in the garage area. It has since become much worse, based on the number of serious competitors and high $. Those guys probably earn their money more than most sports figures. One this NASCAR did then and I am sure still do, is not let anyone in the garage area after 6:00 pm and you can't get back in till 6:30 or 7:00 am. If not , the sponsors would expect you to be thrashing on the car 24 hours per day. Pulling a wagon with two cans of gas from the pit stall closest to turn one at Talledega to the Union 76 pump and back, during a summer day race on that hot asphalt, burned your feet. It looks fun, it is, but it is dam hard work.
Larry McReynolds was our crew chief. He went with Yates a couple years later.
Cooliest driver (unflappable) David Pearson
Coolest and shrewdest crew chief-Jr. Johnson
Genetically stupid drivers-the Bodines
Balls-DE
Should never have been allowed to drive-Robby Gordon, Ernie Irvan and Phil Parsons
The nicest-Bobby Allison
Best feel of the car DE
Most knowledge of the car and setup-Bobby Allison, Morgan Shephard
Just my opinion.

At the end of the day the one with the most points wins! I am glad to see Stewart win the Championship, yes he does have a temper but so did "DE" and he was a winner too, Joe Gibbs has done a great job keeping Tony in the points this year, the guy can drive the wheels off a car as good as any one out there.
NASCAR did not "Give" him the Championship, he earned it.

Congratlation Tony Stewart, now go to Disneyland and have some fun.

:) :) :)

gilla, you hit the nail on the head and you sure got the Bodines right ! Can't agree with you on Robby Gordon though. The boy can drive, but just doesn't fit the new napcar mold. Would be better off in the open wheel ranks. Same way with Tony Stewart, the dude can drive anything, but doesn't fit with Nascar politics. I'm betting he'll be back in the Irl after next season, unless he takes the nascar title again. :D Biggest problem with todays racing is that the mighty dollar rules all and having talent doesn't mean as much as it used to.

I agree to a point, but where did Newman and Johnson come from. Sorta outta the blue.

As for Gordon, he was a good truck racer, but I can't see needing a lot of finesse in that kind of racing.

Newman and Johnson are both class acts and will do the sport wonders in terms of PR and these two dont seem to be the type to make any waves in the press. I would say that one of them will be a serious contender if not champ next year.
I hope this makes Stewart "GROW UP" and see what all he has going for himself.
Congrats to Joe Gibbs Racing, he (Joe) deserves this, afterall he is the one who has put up with the baby all year!!
