It's a 502 block.

Powerboat did an article on the 600SCi in the February mag. It sounds like Mercury took all the things that were wrong with the discontinued 575SCi and built the 600SCi.

Too bad people like me had to be there guinea pigs. Most of the things that they are doing to the 600SCI, I'm having done to my 575SCi's to make them right.

I'm looking forward to seeing the new 625SCi in 2008. Good luck guy's.

The head gaskets blew on my starboard motor and were ready to fail on the port side.

The ports from the thermostat housing going to the headers were just about completely closed with corrosion.

I'm sure some overheating was going on but the temp gage never showed anything.

The only signs that things were going wrong was the gradual loss of power. When I bought the boat it ran 83 MPH and just continued to drop off. The last day I couldn't even reach 70 MPH and still no sign of trouble from the gages. Later the same day the starboard motor just stopped running.

I'm going with hydraulic cams, better pistons and rods, balanced crank and MSD ignition. The blocks were bored out too.

I do like the way the motors look and sound but they have not been as good as I was lead to believe in the beginning. I hope the improvements that they are getting now will allow them to hold up for awhile.

was the boat new when you bought it?

No but the boat only had 75 hours on it when I bought it.

It came from a salt water home and I don't think it was taken care of properly. All that flushing and stuff that's required to run in salt water. Even so, by the time it reached 100 hours a blown head gasket? Seems way too soon to me.

Then Mercury announces that the 575 is being discontinued and the all new and improved 600 is being unveiled. Yep, gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling.

Maybe I shouldn't throw stones because I wasn't the original owner and don't know for sure how the boat was maintained before I got it. But it stings to think that I am putting $20,000+ into two motors that I was lead to believe were,,,,, how did he put it??? Oh yea, bullet proof.

I know I could get away cheaper but I'm trying to make these things closer to bullet proof.

OK I'm done, now you can get back to slapping Mercury on the back.

Ours havn't seen salt water,,,,yet  . But I think that has a big role in the thermostats coroding up.

I will pull ours and check them before this summer. we have 50 hours on ours. knock on wood, so far so good.

And yah, I love the look of them too :)

This new 600 is no surprize, after what Merc did with the 500EFI. They went with a 525 that had a better ignition system, enclosed cooling, and smartcraft availibility. But it doesn't mean the 500EFI is not a great engine! We just have to take care of them.

Merc needs a drive inbetween the bravo and the number six! Something price effective. Then, bring on a nice 700 or 800 hp blown efi!
they do - they're called 3A's and 5A's - both requires transmissions like the 6, but are not dry sumps like the 6's.

however like the 6's, they're expensive and I've considered switching to a pair of 5's that a friend has. I'd have to move one engine forward for the tranny, but I wouldn't be worrying about blowing up outdrives - however I can buy 4 or 5 spares Imco drives for the price of a used pair of 5's.

isnt it amazing how far technology had brought these motors in the past 10 years!

it used to be basic motors and an otion to a mag motor!

i am wonder where things will be 10 years from today.
