http://www.1800runsnew.com/recon.htm Has decent deals on 502s around 5900. They do build a real nice 540 too
Yes, John is the one I talk to over there and a real good guy.

They have killer deals on NEW GM Marine 502's.

I would think this would be the best no-nonsense approach to repowering and worth the extra couple of $$'s over 454's, especially aince you are buying a HUGE boat.

When you buy it and start working on it make sure to start a thread on your work. I'll bet most of us will appreciate even more being able to follow your project.

Welcome to the club....luckilly I bought mine from a friend and he did most of the dirty work that your about to dive into, I still have some to do but those big oldies are so worth it in the end....mines 1985

They will have zero hours and have all new components for 8k. Do you think I am better off buying 2 crate 502's instead?
So:
Brand New Heads?
Brand New valves, guides, springs, retainers, locks?
Brand new : pushrods, rocker arms, guide plates?
Brand New : cam, lifters?
Brand new : crankshaft, connecting rods, pistons
Brand new - oil pump, oil pump drive, oil pan, avlve covers
Brand new : bolts/nuts/etc/etc

You see where I'm coming from. Rebuilt does not mean brand new. It can come close but many times it doesn't.

$5200 for a brand new from GM Marine spanking long block with tin is a good deal.

Again, I would worry about the rest of the boat first. And then make your engine decisions after.

Congrats Joe now i know who to call when we want to party on the big pond{michgan} imagine pulling up to Blarney isalnd in that bad boy. I can put you in touch w/ great engine builder out this way, he just did afriend of mines 468"s for his 42 fountain , he is buddys w/ gary Dyers and put Dyers 8-71 blowers on top of them he should be pushing 750 hps X3 motors hello 100 mph plus! let me know i'll hook you up! I am helping him in the evenings getting everything put back together it has been a great learning experience &sorta fun too! Good luck, anytime you want to ride in a fast narrow boat let be know invites always open! :)

heres an oldie for you guys......former mechanics/friend boat. the guy is a complete white trash loser, i found this out the hard way. none the less, he had a 31 stinger 1981 i believe that would run mid "honest gps" 90's .......it was a screamer.

cfm, you have a good point on the motors. How much do you think it should cost to have the stock mags freshened up?
That's a loaded question. :winker:

$1500 to $4000 ?
Depends on what is found, what upgrades you decide to do, and how meticulous he is and what he charges for each operation.

Don't mean to be vague but I have to.

I'll tell you this - it will be more than you are first told and more than you first think.

I remember last season the motors ran good. Held good oil pressure and ran cool. One burned some oil a bit, but no knocking, ticking, etc. Maybe Ill just get the crate 502's and sell the 454 mags in their present condition.

CFM, when can we hang out. You always have some good info. I wish I had freinds that had at least half a brain. Good guys, but useless when it comes to getting help.Out of 10 guys I hang with, only 1 knows how to change his own oil on his car. They come but the house when im working on my truck, drink my beer, and smoke my cigarettes, and watch me work. When the beer and smokes are gone, so are they. :angry1:

Thats why i figure instead of trying to half a$$ it, ill just replace both motors, and drives from the get go. I figure a pair of big blocks 10k, a pair of new bravos 7k, gauges 500. Sell the tired 454 mags(they run) for 3k, and the used drives for 2k. I know, Im getting way ahead of myself. I should have 15k in motor and drives when its over. Of course the little things like trim pumps, hoses, wires, etc add up. I wouldnt mind having the stock mags rebuilt, but after dealing with an engine builder last year, I dont want my motors in the shop for 4 or 5 months to save a few bucks.
Respectfully, What type of gauges are you expecting to purchase (new?) for 500 clams? As far as drives, 7K will not get you two NEW bravo I's. Closer to 8k, and that's a deal. I just had two bravos rebuilt, needing only the usual parts plus one upper gear set and two prop shafts, and that ran 4K. Not trying to discourage you at all, just put the speedwake mentality up on the shelf and open up that check book. It's a boat your rebuilding, not a car. Autozone doesn't carry rebuilt bravo drives.
