Just got a boat it has a stock 454 1998 f/i.
I took the boat out 3 times ran like a champ but being the anal boat owner that I am I brought it to my boat mechanic (who was highly recommended by many and this is in no way shape or form knocking is work)he changed all fluids and filters and also the impeller in the sea pump.Took the boat out the next day at the dock i started it up and it took a long time for water to come out of the ex.tips,(about 90sec) there was even a little squeaking noise just before the water appeared.
The boat seem to run fine after that, then on the way back in(slow zone)the temp gauge was at 180 & it runs rough at 1000rpm`s idle is fine. The starboard side was making steam from the ex.tip so I put my hand on top of the riser and it was HOT you could barley touch it ,and the port side was fine.
Go home run it on the hose runs like a champ.
No water in oil Thank God. :confused1
Help

That is about the only culprit for water flow... the impeller(s) unless its clogged somewhere, I would think that is unlikely since most of the openings to the exhaust pipes are pretty big...

However on our little 9 hp outboard for the dingy boat.. Its stopped pumping out the pee hole, check the impeller and its fine.. Guess its clogged somewhere else...

The "squeaking" noise you mentioned.....my first thought was a loose belt.......so i would check you sea-water pump belt to make sure its tight.......it may be too loose and not turning the pump over the right way.....
If you've ever tried to turn the pump over by hand when dry you would know theres a ton of friction in there.....

I also have heard that right before it smokes the impeller....lol Also had trouble with the belts tearing up a few years ago...

before pulling the thermostst assembly appart.....pull the hoses off the thermostat assembly that go to your exhaust.........there should be a spring/ball assembly in there......its there to try and equalise the water going into each exhaust.....maybe one of the springs is loadedup with junk and isnt opening properly to let water out......

You need to ask the mechanic what shape the previous impeller was in. If it was missing pieces then you probably have one/some stuck somewhere.

If it was fine, all pieces accounted for, then you may have a problem with the new one.

No tuncommon, unfortuately, for a new impeller to take a crap because of running dry for a few seconds.
