Winnilakers,
The RR&D committee has schedule the House Bill 162 hearings this summer for the first 2 hearings.

The first 2 hearings are
Wednesday, June 29th at 7:00pm, Moultonborough Academy, 25 Blake Road, Moultonborough NH
Wednesday, July 6th at 7:00pm, Kingswood High School, 296 South Main Street, Wolfeboro, NH
What is House Bill 162?
To impose a speed limit of 45 mph during the day and 25 during the night on Lake Winnipeseaukee.

What can you do?
We need your attendance, you don't have to speak, just need you to be present. There will be a sign up form there to get your vote. If you would like to speak in opposition to HB162, please contact Jodi Grimbilas at
603-225-7170.
Hearings Etiquette
Please do not talk or make sarcastic sounds when speakers are talking. We know they can be challenging, but being professional goes a long way!!

Why oppose it?
There are no facts or statistical data that shows that a speed limit will make the lake any safer as the supporters state. They simply want to return the lake back to the Dirty Dancing Era.

Please pass onto everyone, bring as many people as you can

You may have seen the press lately, this is seriously being considered!!!!

It's only because I may have both boats ready. :dead:

Here whe are, all complaining about too high real estate values and too high of taxes, and the Towns are complaining about not enough money, and then this comes about.

If this happens I truly believe land value will crumble, towns will lose money, and being one of the biggest areas contributing to the state and believe it or not paying for other towns , the state will take a crap too.

Time to take out an equity loan for full tilt. :dead: I'

Most of the lake is more narrow than 1 mile. Take a look at the map I believe is on the 1st page of this thread.

The Main section is no issue with this type of 1 mile law, but, I'd guess most boats under 24ft don't venture out there more than 1 -2 times a year. It get's snarly.

Several years ago they enforced a 40mph speed limit on Walloon Lake,up by Petoskey Michigan.
When I was in high school I spent my simmuers up there and it was crawling with big HP jet boats and v-drives every weekend and local business was BOOMING.
Years later I went back with my 223 Bandit and you would of thought I had killed someone from the looks I got. I pulled up to the village marina where years before you were lucky to find docking space. Well I could of parked a cruise ship and not hit anything. And this was the 4th of July weekend!!!
The ski shop was closed down along with one of the 2 boat repair shops from lack of business. :unhappy1:
It was actually an absolute shame but most of the people up there are retired and come from old money so they don't care about the little guy trying to make a living. As a matter of fact when I was securing the boat to the dock this old fossil came up to me and asked what I thought I was doing with this boat on the lake.
When I asked him what he meant,he informed me that
we don't like your on this lake.

The whole state of NH will go down like a bunch of burning bricks if this happens.

It can't happen! ???

If it does, I'll have some cheap but nice real estate to sell anyone if they want to go canoing on a lake that is too big to canoe.

Oh, speaking of which, I'll throw two canoes into the deal too. :laugher: :laugher:

I just checked the map. I see your point. I will gladly refund your retainer and be on my way.

The point that I was trying to use is that you need to have something in your back pocket or a plan B, if you will, just in case this thing gets some legs in the legislature. Its great if you win, but if you find yourself under the tires you need to have something you can live with if you don't win. No what I mean. I see the 1 mile thing won't work and not knowing the actual Lake its hard to come up with that.

What about the arguement that boats are not required to have speedos on them and those that do, aren't accurate? That may open up a whole nother can of worms, but I am trying to come up with ways to combat this legislation. The cool thing about politics is that you can never strike out. You can swing as many times as you want, and sooner or later, they might just quit pitching to you.

Or they beam you in the head and knock you out for the rest of the game. That part sucks.
The last hearing in front of a committee the head of the Marine Patrol said flat out there is no way to enforce.
when asked if speed is an issue on the lake he said "no".

RADAR IS NOT ACCURATE ON WATER. A floating boat, not stationary - aiming at an object that is not traveling a known vector with no reliable reflective surface is not going to give a reliable (if any?) reading.

For those lurking the boat sites looking for ammo - If your problem is that you cannot take a canoe out on a 27 mile lake safely, the complete absence of power boats would not make it safer! (thank you CFM) If you want to canoe or ride a foot paddle boat - try a pond.

First hearing tonight - Wed 6/29/05 at 7:00PM

June 29th. Moultonborough Academy, 25 Blake Road, Moultonborough

Just two hours from now.

I'm going.

I'll be wearing a New England Patriots Cap (for good luck) and a HVH Cyl head, intake manifold, and 'Super Sucker' black T-Shirt because I bleed hp.

If you see me pull in I have a Crew Cab White Chevy 4x4 with plates that say CFM-TECH.

If you see me please say hi !

Gracious.

There was a very large turn out of the sailboat community last nite and the emotional testimony was flowing.
We heard many stories most beginning like this :

3 years ago an out of control boat came at us....back in 1974 my grandson was almost killed...in 1986 a speeding drunk driver came within inches... we almost got swamped by a boat that came with in 20 ft... I want the lake like it was in 1932...its so crowded on week-ends...who needs to drive that fast?..

The chairman of the committee asked for facts though got few of any that would justify implementing a speed limit. Every single incident that was relayed about dangerous boating is covered by existing laws; right of way, no wake , headway speed within 150 ft of others, driving while intoxicated and so on.

When a speaker from our side spoke of facts; declining death and accident rate over past several years, implementation of the boating certificate, studies by the coast guard - no deaths (or even an accident I believe) in past 5 years in the state attributed to a speed over 45mph.

If an outsider were listening in and asked to make a decision based on the facts heard, its unfathomable to believe they would take more than a instant to vote against it.

Even with testimony lacking any facts - those of you expecting everyone else to do the work and you to continue boating - your in for a rude awakening. While many there left before the end, I left at 10:00 - they were very vocal. (they'd like to make us out to be the wild cowboys and not once did we erupt into applause or hoots and hollers after a speaker, they did so continuously even though told show no support or displeasure by the chairman)
I drove 1.5 hours to and from and hope more of you do the same next Wednesday, July 6th at 7:00pm, Kingswood High School, 296 South Main Street, Wolfeboro, NH . The committee is made up of an older segment of our population to say the least and need to see more of us there in opposition to the bill. You do not need to speak, sign the petition and act respectful.
