Sold my M3 yesterday but here is what happened and I just want the boards opinion did I handle it the right way.
Had a guy call early in the week from out of state. Wanted to look at the car, 3 hour drive. Made arrangements with him to come to house. Stated he would be here at 3 pm on Wed. On Wed get another guy that wants to see the car. Told him I had a guy from out of state coming to look and would not make a decision till he arrived, but told him he was welcome to come look at the car. He did. We drove it and he said he would give me asking price if the other guy didn't come. I said fine. Told him the out of state guy was do by 3 pm. I said if no word from him by 5pm I would let the local guy have the car.
5pm. Local guy calls. I told him to come out. I had called the out of state guy 3 X on his sell and sent him an e-mail no response. 10 minutes after I told the local guy to come over the out of state guy says his 10 miles from the house.
They both get here. Out of state guy, OS from now on, wants the car. I felt like $hit. So they begin to bid on the car. OS guy ended up being high bidder. I asked do you have a cashiers check or cash. "No I am going to write you a personal check, its good. " I said no way. I asked the local guy if he had certified funds. He said yes and whipped out a letter from his bank approved for more then enough to cover the car. My bank also so I called and it was legit. I let him have the car at his high bid. The OS guys said it was not fair. He was a kid of around 20 years old. I said did you really think I would make this transaction and let you drive this car home on a personal check and a hand shake? He said yes.
So, did I do the right thing by letting the other guy have the car?
