There is NOTHING on this accident anywhere.

I called the Macomb County Marine Division on Monday after the pictures were put on this website. The officer I spoke to said the accident was "under investigation" and he couldn't give me any more information until they concluded the investigation. I asked why the accident wasn't in the paper or on the news and the officer said the media only reports what it hears on the scanners and radios.

I left my name and phone number and never heard another word. I just called back and left a message saying I'm still interested in any information they may have.

If I don't hear anything soon, I'm going to resort to irresponsible speculation...

I just got off the phone with a Macomb County Sheriff's Marine Division officer. This is what he told me:

- The Wellcraft was a Canadian-registered vessel. It ran over the 19' Searay. The Searay had 3 women on board; all 3 were taken to St. Clair Shores CG station then transported to St. John Hospital. 2 of the 3 were held for observation and released. The third, the owner/operator is still in the hospital and is in stable condition (no fatalities). A ticket was issued to the O/O of the Wellcraft.

- The owner/operator of the Wellcraft and his passenger stated "they didn't see the Searay". From the investigation (which is still open), Macomb County thinks the Wellcraft came up directly behind the Searay.

- The accident was witnessed and called in by a sail vessel. The Wellcraft, the sailboat and a couple of salvage vessels were at the scene and "helped" until the sheriff arrived.

I mentioned again how unusual I thought it was that this received no press. He remarked he thought it was unusual, too. He said usually stuff like this gets picked up on the scanners and they end up fighting the crews to the scene.

He wouldn't tell me the name of the O/O of the Wellcraft as the investigation is still open.

I would say "how can you *not* see a 19' long boat on a clear, sunny day, but I've had people pull right out in front of me in my F-250 4x4 Crew Cab, which is roughly the size of an apartment building. I've learned never to understimate how stupid people can be....

Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot.

It wasn't mentioned in the phone conversation with the officer, but I wouldn't be surprised if the captain wasn't at the helm (just irresponsible speculation on my part....).

Sometimes us captains need to pay more attention to the operation of the vessel then tending to the needs of the guests on board. Leave those duties to the first mate. No speculation, just a friendly reminder.
