How do you know which supercharger to use? I am referring to the size of a roots style. Do you use a 177, 240, 671,871 ?
Is it all based on how much power you want to make? I wondered if it is smarter to run a larger charger at a slower pace to safeguard against heat? Thanks Dwight

A lot of factors here.

Basics:

Smaller SC more effecient at lower engine rpms and lower total boost

Bigger SC more effecient at higher engine rpms and boost

Smaller SC more effecient on smaller motors

====================================

I've seen people with 454's/502's go from a 177 and 250 SC and lose power going up to the 8-71's.

Uhoh, maybe you shouldn't of went with me on that sea trial Dwight. If you go and buy a huffer just make sure to tell Laura it wasn't my idea.
Are we going to Johnsons Speed Shop after work? :laugher:

I Love the sound of them huffers. I first have to get the boat back together....
I will tell Laura that you are going to hook me up :laugher:
I see so many different size chargers out there I was wondering if it makes more sense to run bigger or smaller?

As you have wittnessed first hand my 177 blowers do the job quite nicely and are by far the most inexpensive way to go.
I will call Laura and just tell her what ever Dwight buys for the boat I have NOTHING to do with it. :laugher:

How many cubes
how much boost
cam/head/exhaust efficiencies

All the above will determine how much air you can pack in a cylinder given a specific blower.
Each blower has a rating of X cfm per rotation. But each one has a max rpm too.
In the examples you've given, they're all roots type.
In my opinion, overdriving a roots by more than 15% is too much on a boat and creates too much heat, therefore adverse effects.

Thanks cfm. I will ck it out.
DS that will for sure make her nervous :laugher:
PC, I have a 502 mpi now so that would be the engine I would convert to carb and charger. I think Scott has a great blueprint of how to go. I was just wondering if a bigger charger would work as well or better than Scotts set up.

If you have a 502 MPI, why wouldn't you consider a Whipple? Roughly 600-625 HP and in a pretty reliable package.

Depending on time frame.......availability may be one factor.
