Police continue to search for the body of a 63-year-old man who went missing from his boat in Chesapeake City over the weekend.
Authorities believe Kimmo Aleck Dammert, of Ontario, Canada, drowned in the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal after falling off his 48-foot yacht Saturday.
Dammert had docked near Schaefer’s Canal House seeking help for mechanical problems.
A neighbor called police around 12:30 p.m. after he noticed the unoccupied boat tied perpendicular to the dock with the engines running, said Sgt. Ken Turner of the Maryland Natural Resources Police.
“It was very peculiar,” Turner said. “His vessel was running, in fact one of the engines was in reverse, and it was just tied by one line n a bow line.”
Several vessels from the Natural Resources Police, Coast Guard and Chesapeake City and Hacks Point volunteer fire companies spent the weekend searching for Dammert’s body, but have yet to find anything, Turner said.
A Natural Resources Police boat and two officers are continuing the search around the clock, Turner said.
“Our search area has gotten larger, we are not ruling anything out,” Turner said. “We are basically searching the whole canal.”
Police believe Dammert may have slipped into the water while untying his boat in rough conditions.
Weather during the time of accident included 20- to 25-knot winds from the northwest, blowing against an incoming tide, and water temperature that was in the high 40s to lower 50s, Turner said.
“You have a conflict there: Wind blowing one way and the tide blowing the other way,” Turner said. “Those are very, very rough conditions. You are going to get wet.”
Witnesses also told police that there were icy conditions on the boat, which further led police to believe Dammert may have fallen overboard.
Turner said police weren’t sure where Dammert was heading. Witnesses reported he had been anchored at Reed Island, in Delaware, early Saturday, he said.
Dammert docked in Chesapeake City at the fuel dock near Schaefer’s and reported he needed assistance with engine problems.
Turner said he thinks Dammert was moving his boat away from the fuel dock when he fell overboard.
Authorities have been searching the shoreline of the C&D Canal and the surface of the water, but have not used divers because of concern for their safety in the rough conditions.
