and whoever said that about driving someone else's bike/boat being theft - you are correct. And I am treating it as such as are the police. Just because keys are in it doesn't mean you're allowed to drive it.

Donzi girl -you are absolutely right. If someone ever started my boat I would also treat it like theft.

you go girl!

Absolutely right - go get'em! Seems like over the last few years there's been something in the water that has upped the reproduction rate for assholes. There sure seem to be a lot more of them than there used to be.

I blame Bush, of course. ;)

PUT-N-BAY Bashers!!!!!!

Is not as bad as its been made out to be!

Have been going for many years 20+ and have seen many of the people described here, but have seen for the most part considerate people when it comes to other boats. I have have rafted and been rafted on to almost every time there, and have not ever had an issue with this system:

1- If I am looking to raft I will always look for the right people/boat to raft on to, and will always ask the outside boat or one of the others in the raft first (common curticy) or the dock master will assign a spot and help. The response from the other boaters or the condition of the boat will tell you if this is where you want to be or to find another spot.

2-If we are on the inside we normally stay on the boat untill you have the maximum 4 boats allowed and get to know these people before leaving. We also will tend to encourage the right looking boats to raft up when we see them. Also going with a group you know always helps.

3-We normally have a 100 lb. German Sheperd on the back of the boat, this tends to eliminate too many people wanting to cross over the boat.

Have been to the bay many times this year and take the kids along and have not had an issue.

And for the record, no offense was taken, Kidnova. But if anyone ever wants to steal my boat it will be easy for them. I very rarely take my keys out of the ignition.
You mean they actually can be removed from the ignition? I'll have to try that someday! :laugher:

I never take the keys out of my boat. But I never overnight in my boat either. Just because the keys are there doesn't give anyone the right to move your boat by starting it. Period.

And like RH said this guy wasn't even suppose to be there!

I've never had a problem before this really. This is a first for me. It won't stop me from going to PIB but as Tony said - I'll be more inclined to go with a group of boats that I know so that we can all raft off of each other.

I DON'T KNOW?

SEEMS TO ME THAT LEAVING YOUR KEYS IN YOUR BOAT IS NO DIFFERENT THAN LEAVING THEM IN YOUR CAR.

YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY WILL LAUGH AT YOU IF THERE IS A CLAIM.

IT IS AN INVITATION TO TROUBLE.

I DON'T THINK RAFTING UP TO SOMEONES BOAT THAT YOU DO NOT KNOW IS FAR FROM ILLEGAL EITHER. WHAT RIGHT DO YOU HAVE TO EVEN TOUCH SOMEONE ELSES PROPERTY LET ALONE PUT IT RISK OF DAMAGE.

Unfortunately 98% of the docking spots on PIB and the rest of the Islands WILL raft you, if your not willing to raft you dont dock there PERIOD! I enjoy spending time on the islands and patronizing the bars and shops on them. Driving around in circles out in the middle of the lake becase I dont want another boat near mine is out of the question.

I would venture to say that 95% of PIB boaters and 99.9% of Kelleys Island boaters will respect your boat like it is their own i.e.....fenders, no shoes, and the overall courtesey that you would expect from one boat owner to another.

When you pull into an island marina the first thing you are always asked is "how long are you staying?" this determines where your boat will be docked in conjunction with other boats and the lenght of time they will be staying. If you tie up on any of the PIB public docks and you are the first boat on along the dock YOU SHOULD EXPECT that there is a possibility that there could be up to 4 more boats rafted off of you and that you may not be leaving for a good 24 hours, if you refuse to aknowledge this you need to be kicked in the head and go dock somewehere else.

Rafting HAPPENS if you cant stand to take your eyes off of your boat for more than 10 minutes becase it is tied up to someone else then you need to move it somewhere else or better yet, find a new hobby.
Hey Tony, you know better then that. You can use the Buoy method, but as DG said, no late nite water taxi runs. My only point is that there is an alternative.

You are told by the Dockmaster when you come in...4 boat raft-up..If you dont like it, leave....Thats just the way it is up there. it is NOT done down here on the river.
or on Cumberland.

I can leave my car running & insurance will pay..If yours wont you might want to shop around..... :D

And.....I leave my keys in my boat alot & especialy would have being part of the reserved LEOPA docks.
Apaches dont even have keys !..

The point here that no one seems to be catching on to is that EVERY LAST SINGLE DOCKING SPACE FOR B DOCK WAS RESERVED AND PAID FOR BY LEOPA FOR THE WEEKEND.

If you are not part of Leopa then you had absolutely no right to dock there this weekend.

The person who moved her boat was not part of Leopa therefore they had no right to dock there at all period end of story. A blind man could have seen the signs plastered eveywhere that said RESERVED FOR LEOPA MEMBERS ONLY!!!!

That being the case - As soon as it was identified that boat did not belong to LEOPA (long before the incident) it should have been removed by the dockmaster/owner of the marina. By not doing this they did not make good on the purchase of the dock by LEOPA and I think could be held liable for the damages as well.

Sorry that is the case where you boat. Where I boat nobody rafts up to your boat unless you give them the OK. I would not go there. Don't tie up to me and expect me to wait for you.

I can't believe you would tolerate this.

I DO NOT TIE UP TO OTHER PEOPLE. (Without permission)

DON'T DO IT TO ME.

Man what a world!
YAHOO! YOU GOTTA AGREE WITH THIS! :)

CHECKED WITH THE INSURANCE COMPANY!

IF YOU LEAVE YOUR CAR WITH THE KEYS IN IT. SOMEONE TAKES IT AND CAUSES DAMAGE OR INJURY TO ANOTHER VEHICLE OR PERSON...

YOU ARE NOT COVERED.

IF YOU HAVE COMPREHENSIVE INS AND DAMAGE IS ONLY TO YOUR VEHICLE IT WILL BE COVERED. THEN YOU WILL BE CANCELLED..

IF YOUR VEHICLE IS USED IN A CRIME YOU ARE NOT COVERED AT ALL.

DO NOT LEAVE YOUR KEYS IN YOUR CAR.

I DID NOT CHECK MY BOAT INS BUT I WOULD GUESS IT IS THE SAME.

ALSO I WAS TOLD THAT YOU NEED TO REPORT IT STOLEN IMMEDIATELY TO HAVE ANY COVERAGE .

I don't know if this varies from state to state but here in Michigan that is absolutely, positively INCORRECT! Keys in the ignition or not you are covered.

You guys don't really think that your insurance company will refuse to cover you if you leave your keys in the ignition do you?
Yes, this was a fact in the city I lived in !!! In fact, in some citys nearby if you did not have an alarm there was a good chance you couldn't even get insurance. Seriously.

Now, I'm not sure about where I live now. I don't think bears know how to drive yet, but I could be wrong. :laugher:
