Took the Harley 43 for a spin - been a while. Took off out inlet and it ran well until I came off plane and the motor sputtered and died. Of course it was the one with the power steering - nice. Wouldnt start backup for about 15 minutes....seemed like it wasnt getting fuel.

Temps at 180-200 oil, h2o at 155-160

Fuel filter is new ... tanks half full ....been running fine. Got it running after I checked the fuel separator ... then ran on plane back to inlet and as soon as I came off plane it died again.

What should I check?

Thanks

Man that sucks!!! Temps sound safe. This might be on the wrong forum but, if you think its a fuel thing........could be.......new filter swelled with water and is restricting, since "its been awhile". Any fuel in your clear tube coming from your fuel pump? If so you have a crack in the pump diaphram. When was the last time you check the oil level in your fuel pump attached to the sea water pump?
People miss this and you can wear the finger from your pump and have it not create enough pressure to feed you carb.
Anti siphon ball stuck at the tank from alittle corroshion? Does it have a carb filter? is it clean?
Start with the simple things first.
Electrical.............You have to have Contact!!!!!!!! When you get to this area you have to make sure you have good grounds then go from there with the sensors.
Hoped I helped alittle.

Good stuff guys - thanks. I'll check the clear hose first - it seemed like a fuel pump issue more than anything.

Both engines were running off the same tank at the time and each engine has it's own fuel separator and filter.

These motors were from Bill's Marine in Ft LAuderdale and come to find out everything in them was used and not even reconditioned.....starters have failed, alternators have fried, I'm sure the fuel pump was laying around his bone yard for years before he cobbled it into my motor....I'll check it out.

They are rebuildable these pumps right?

There is some condensation in the clear hose - I also found some wire wrapped around the prop shaft which explains the stalling at idle speeds in gear somewhat but the motor dying in neutral doesnt make sense.

My fuel pressure gauge is "bouncy" on the motor that is having issues. I should pull the pump and check it over.

pulled the pump and two things seem a bit strange:

1) the is no spring under the "finger" on my pump yet the new stock merc unit has one

2) when I plunger it by hand rusty slime that smells like fuel comes out the vent tube so I assume the diaphram is spent.

3) according to BOW - there is no rebuild kit available so I got a new one for $100. I would have preferred to rebuilt both for $100. Oh well.

Wish me luck with the install. BTW the pump oil reservoirs were full.
