I've read up on the how to winterize a 454 thread. It's all mumbo jumbo to me! :dead: This is my first performance boat, so last winter I had Boatworks winterize. Thanks Frank. :D It's a piece of mind. But, I have to get the boat cleaned, waxed, and ready for cold ASAP!!! I need a volunteer to SHOW me how and why, please. I'll supply BEER! :D I'm good with mechanics, but I need to see to understand. Any takers? I live Wilton. :D

I'm unfamiliar with a 454. I just need to SEE how to do it. My dads boats over the years seemed very easy to winterize. But, its been a while and I want to learn to winterize myself. Lack of memory due to beer consumption! :D I don't want to be a pain in the ***. I just need a teacher. My pops offered but he to has had memory loss and is also not sure.

Pretty simple really.

start the motor get it to operating temp. Fog the motor till it stalls.

change the oil

There should be 4 drain plugs. One on each side of the block, towards the back. One on each mainfold. Drain those. Sometimes you have to stick a nail or something up through the hole to get any crud out blocking the hole. It shold drain about 3 gallons or so.

pull the water hose from the thermostat and back fill with antifreeze.

Add stabil to the gas.

This is the cliff notes version, but you get the geneal Idea. I usually pull the hoses, and make sure there is no water in them either.

change the fluid in the outdrive too.

There may, or may not be another drain plug on the oil cooler. My 7.4L does not have one, but I've heard of others that do. If there is, drain that also.

You can also pull the plugs, and spray some fogging oil in the cylclinders too if you want.

Here's what I do:

Add Stabil to the gas first so it has time to get into your injectors/carb while you're warming it up.

Bring engine to operating temp. Shut off.

Hook up muffs to bucket with 5 gallons of anti-freeze.

Start boat

When anti-freeze is almost gone fog the chit out of it until motor dies.

I also grease, inspect, change fluids etc.

Now, send me a case of beer. I prefer Bud Light. :D

Thanks. I got through high school english reading cliff notes. :D I hope this does'nt sound stupid but, just turn the motor over to get up to temp? I don't need any rabbit ears or hoses correct?
you'll need to run the motor for about 5 or 10 mintues to get the motor up to operating temp. YES PUT THE MUFFS ON. :D

Motor needs to be warm to thin the oil, and make it easier to change.

I was just talking to a merc guy the other day and he said there is no need to fog the engines.. I hate when someone throws something like that at me. Makes you wonder of it is true or not

What was his reasoning? I look at it as less chance for rust/corrosion while my motor sits. It takes 5 seconds and costs about $0.20 so I'll keep doing it! :D

It all started with the storing with full tank or almost empty and went to that. He said he has talked to engine builders and they said that it doesn't do anything

I agree it doesn;t hurt anything so why not. Better safe then sorry

Or if you really feel unsure you can bring it to someone and pay about $100 more then materials will cost you.....

I think before I did it myself I used to pay $150 for winterization and fluids changed. An extra $50 for an acid bath.

here is my entire procedure for my H.O.

1. grease trailer bearings, coupler, gimble

2. run fuel as low as possible, stabalize whats left...

3. Change gear lube.

4. start engine, get up to operating temp. Change engine oil and filter

5. pump out water with little blue pump. for 454 drain Block and risers

6. start engine and run 2 gallons of pink RV anti-freeze through it and stop. For 454 just run 4 gallons of anti-freeze though it, when your down to one gallon left, fog with marvel mysery oil through carb... Skip # 7 and 8

7. pull fuel filter, dump half the gas out of it and fill the rest with 2-stroke oil.

8. reinstall fuel filter, start engine run an additional 2 gallons of pink RV.

9. pump out RV with little blue pump. for 454 Drain risers and block.

10. Depending on how anal you are, pull each plug and squirt oil into cylinders.

11. Install fresh fuel filter.

why do you changeg the oil before adding the antifreeze? Wouldn't it be better to change the oil after you are done running the engine? So the oil is fresh in the spring?
