Apparently my girlfriend is doing some kind of project for her master's, and they want her do this:

"Prepare a PowerPoint Presentation for use by a jet ski manufacturer in a town meeting at a lake resort community. Anticipate the issues residents might offer and prepare persuasive answers to their concerns."

Basically just post what you don't like about them . She says she wants lots of "opinions" and says "thank you" in advance. ;)

I HATE EM .....

They are a nuisance on the water...

I could care less if they were ALL banned tomorrow !!!

They are the reason my boat insurance keeps going up !!

Did I mention that I HATE EM ?

I live near a town boat ramp and have a huge private beach as part of my association so I watch the typical scenario about 20-30 times a year. Basically, anytime I'm at either place.

Typically one jet ski is accompanied by a group of 3-4 people. A pair of Jet Ski's is accompanied by 4-6 people.

Typically there is one experienced driver with the one jet ski. Not necessarily courteous or totally knowing of boating rules, but atleast half way experienced with the craft. This person is typically the owner. There will be 1 or 2 experienced jet ski driver's with the two.

For those that have never ridden one or atleast never ridden in this lake the instructions to these new drivers are usually:

"Push this button to start. Have fun."

Rental companies that drop them off say that plus
" We'll be back at ....... to pick them up."

I own one too and love it. I don't get annoyed easy but here is what I notice about most PWC drivers that would annoy people;

Never look before turning in front of you.

Take off from shore where you are docked instead of waiting until they are 100' out.

Come straight at you wanting to jump your wake.

Don't go in a straight path for more than a minute.

Follow cruisers for miles.

Come close to hit your white water.

If they borrow yours they like to spray you and everything you have in your boat too.

Take a couple seconds to launch but keep them in the middle of the ramp area so you can't get your boat in.

Race everyone in sight. I kind of like this one.

There's a few. Hope this helps.

Come on Bob... tell us what you really think :laugher:

I used to own one about 8 years ago or so. I was raised on a boat and know the boating rules. My dad always said "Stay way....WAY away from other boats no matter if your in a canoe, bass boat, ski boat, or powerboat. So that logic just stuck when I got the ski.

My honest opinion is they are cheap enough that almost anyone can buy at least a good used one. Trouble is, that "anyone" person has probably never been on the water before and doesn't understand that boats don't have brakes and that the jet ski they are riding is much more manuverable than the boat that they are on a collision course with.

People hate 'em because there are a lot of them around. Just think about it, 12 boats in a singe area isn't so bad because they are typically going from point A to point B. However 12 Jet skis in a single small area are typically going in figure 8's between point A and point B while also trying to catch air behind someone's boat wake.

Some help for your girlfriend's homework. One way to help control them would be to require a special course for each rider to go through that would give them a sticker they must display on their Jet Ski. If the Ski doesn't have that sticker, they are not allowed on that lake. Also implement a 1,2,3 and your out rule. If water patrol catches a licensed rider doing something retarted, they get a free warning, then a $50 fine, then a $100 fine and banned from the lake for the remainder of the season. My guess, if this were the case, the idiots would think they weren't having fun any longer and find somewhere else to ride.

Well i will give you my 0.02.

When I lived in NY I lived on a small Lake (`8 miles long) south of Rochester and I was on the "Board" for the lake. This lake was a watershed lake for a few surrounding towns.

Anyway, I owned a 96 XP at the time, it was modded and raced at local events, all my testing was done on "my' lake during the week, too crazy on weekends.

So here was a list of issues that I had to "defend" as the board contemplated banning PWC's from the lake...

Emissions - the 2 Stroke smoke syndrome
Emissions - 2 Stroke oil "pollution"
Noise
Unsafe riders - Which were blamed on the Ski itself
-----Speed
-----Jumping of wakes to close
-----Wakes (we had a 100' from shore/dock law)

I won't give you my defense, because she needs to do that for important piece of paper (Master's Degree)

My slant.

Parents tell their kids they can ride them but....

STAY WHERE I CAN SEE YOU!

Hence they ride in circles in one area. Same thing happens even more at marinas. Parents dock there boat there and the kids play in sight. Now you have a swarm in a busy area.

Well I do think they are problem in most areas ONLY because of the drivers/owners are idiots.. So I con't think of a way to fix that problem.. your guess is a good as mine.

However I do like to ride them from time to time, really only like it in the ocean in the surf though... Now thats FUN !!! Otherwise I get bored real quick.

Lake Lice - yes i know it's the operator. I can't tell you how many times one of these idiots has cut infront of me, run into the side of my boat cuz they thought it would be fun to spray the people in my boat and generally act llike idiots on the water. Most have no knowledge of or respect for general boating rules. Many if not most are not insured and have never taken a boating course and could careless about taking any responsibilty for thier actions. :gunner:

I find myself having to defend PWC's alot due to the fact that my boat (Yamaha LS2000) is powered by twin 1200cc waverunner engines. When bans are put out on PWC's, they carry over to Jet Boats as well.
Many lakes placed bans on the PWC's due to emissions of the two strokes but then could not justify the claim. Tests concluded that the engines were no more harmful to the environment than any other marine engine. 95% of the lakes that placed the ban on them had to lift it. Now that a good majority of the waverunners are 4 stroke, that arguement has almost vanished. I'll try to find a link to the article.
Another issue is no control at low speeds. No thrust means no steering. That's how alot of accidents occur. Stupid A@@ people can just jump onto one without any training. Add alcohol to the scene and watch out!
Steering fins can be purchased for these crafts, but most people don't bother because it hinders the spinning capabilities.
The final issue is that people are just plain idiots on them. There's no cure for that until something bad happens. Kind of like riding a motorcycle. You think you are invincible until something bad happens. More than once have I had skiiers behind the boat and some kid comes flying out of nowhere to jump my wake, barely missing my skiiers. I've chased a few of them down before.

My advice, EVERYONE should have to take a course before riding a PWC and have some sort of license to show. One more card in my wallet won't cause me any trouble. I have to take a test to drive a car, to scuba dive, and to carry a weapon... riding a PWC is no different. If an activity can easily kill the person performing it or someone around them, training should be involved. Simple as that.

Sorry for the rant. I'll come down off my soapbox now.

I've been riding on waverunners (solo) since 2000 when i was 10. No i didnt have a license at the time and never took a course. Ive got pulled over once for being underaged and he let me off because i was honest with him. I hate how only 10% of the people on waverunners cause 95% of the problem. Yes i jump wakes occasionaly but i check both ways before going. And if i see a boat within 25 feet of me i move out of the way because in illinois u cant be with in 50 ft of a boat or 100 ft from a dock. I just hate how people sterotype all waverunnerists as dumbasses

Some of the issues are that people are stupid on them. Another issue is that i've seen kids on them. Probably some of them 10 years old. 10 year old kids have no idea how things work on the water. They don't even know how to drive a car yet. Its amazing how some parents will just let their child go out on a busy weekend. I love to ride PWC's but i'm one of those people that have been raised on the lake and know a little bit of whats going on. It sucks all those people ruin it for the people that knows whats going on.

I agree with you totally, but my son was literally born on the water, so he can swim and boat better than most people and hes only 5 years old. Its all about what we as parents install in our children! My husband was the same way born in a boat, and he is an awesome captain, wouldnt just trust anyone out on the water, unless they had years of experience, stay out of the water and that should go for Jetskiers too!

Okay Im alittle drunk on my wine, but you get my point. :winker:

It's the drivers.

.
I have been riding jet skis for over 20 years now (sad I'm that old). Learned on stand ups that went a whole 20 mph maybe. There was a learning curve. Now yourun to the dealer, grab the fastest one on the market( $10k ) and go hit 73 mph 20 min. later. Like having an INDY car when you turn 16. It all does depend on the driver!!
