I was born in the late 70's, but still had a very similar childhood as has been mentioned all through the 80's. I lived in the country, had 2 other neighbors with kids my age within walking distance. Had more neighbors within 3 miles but had to ride my bike to. By the time I was 7 my parents bought me and my 2 brothers a 125 cc 3-wheeler to share. That lasted until the next summer when my brothers 11 and 14 got jobs cutting grass so they could afford to buy their own ATV's. I was about 2 years later when I started cutting grass with the middle brother. At one time we had the 3 wheeler, a dirt bike, a "Big Red" 3 wheeler and a 4 wheeler. The only thing my parents bought was that 125 they paid $550 for 1 year old in 1985.

Gosh - I miss the good ol days.

The kids of today are lazy. They are not well educated either. Most are introverts that can't relate to anything because they sat on thier fat azz playing video games, instead of being outside w/ freinds/people and devloping thier interpersonal skills.

Thats so true!!

In school they are taking their Body Mass Index. I guess to tell the parents whos kids ore over weight (like thats not obvious).

I have to disagree with that. " Most are introverts"??
Maybe where you live, but not where i live.. There may be 10% or so that fit your discription, but i doubt that it is much higher. If it is, than your school system is not doing thier job.. :(
IMHO

Quite the broad brush there....
I wonder if they would be well educated if they could spell words like: "their", "developing", "friends"

:) :)

I've learned from first hand experience that often times when ya paint with a broad brush ya end of wearing some of your own paint... :D

I can agree that alot of kids are lazy now a days.. But i cant agree with less educated.. I am amazed at how much smarter my kids are than i was at the same age.. I only i have two in school.. a 6yr old and a 4yr old... My 6yr old can read a book, write sentences, count to 30 in spanish, and so much more... my 4yr old is in K4 (we have two years of K here), and she can write/spell a bunch of words, count, add, and count to 10 in spanish..
Spanish in pre kindergarten?!?!?!
I almost think its too much, too soon.. They are expected to be able to do all this, and learn so much, that there is no time to just be a kid anymore.. and they are so burned out by the end of the day, that relaxing in front of the boobtube sounds better than going out and running around..
But if we don't over educate our kids, to keep up with the other nations (china, india, etc), then we will no longer be a superpower or leading nation..?? Where does it end?? how do can we stop it??

Wow has this thread turned!

I happen to think that the overweight kids that sit on their behinds all day in front of the TV and don't do their homework is a parenting issue. Kids only do what they are allowed to do. I think it's the parents that are lazy. If you feed your kids McDonald's and ice cream everday, it's no wonder they don't want to do anything but sit down.

Ok, ya busted me! I didn't proof read it. (BTW: Read ANY job application from ANY of today's kids. Do they teach spelling now, grammar?)

IMHO, the big problem is parents letting Jr. sit all day and play video games and eat cookies etc. (in other words, using the TV as a baby sitter)
Instead, Jr should be out with friends playing (socializing), riding bikes, and exercising.

After a few years of video games, kids simply don't communicate well. My wife deals w/ kids aged 12 to 20 every day. She has found that most kids can't even address an envelope. (The kid is asked to address an envelope to himself, so that records can be sent to him) Also, most kids can't tell time from an analog clock. How many times when WE were in school did you EVER hear of a shooting? Bringing a gun to school? Some kids of today are going to school wanting to kill a classmate - all w/o much emotion on way or another. Just like what happens on a video game.
When we grew up, we had 3 stooges, Bugs Bunny, road Runner, Etc. No one I knew ever tried to poke my eyes like on 3 Stooges. I also never tied an Acme rocket on my back either. Now, some of the shows we all grew up with are "too violent" for todays kids.

I know that I should stay out of these threads but....

I certainly agree that times are different and that kids are growing up differently than many of us that were born in the 50s and 60s...
That said however, I do think that there are still lots of kids that are not growing up lazy and/or uneducated...
I definately do agree that spending more time involved in (appropriate) outside activities is much better than spending time in front of a TV or a Video game.
There does seem to be more violence in schools...but there also seems to be more adults who are abducting and/or sexually abusing children...If we use a broad brush and say that most children are lazy and uneducated these days then I guess maybe we need to consider whether or not most adults are abductors and child abusers...IMHO neither is the case...but using a broad brush and relying on what we hear in the media could lead one to draw a possibly distorted conclusion.

I know that I should stay out of these threads but....

... I seem to recall that many in my parents generation tended to paint many of the kids from my generation with a broad brush... things were different from when they were in High School...
IMHO ..Times are different... Media coverage is more extensive now... Maybe there are more problems now but it is not like there were not problems then...

Did Woodstock caused quite a stir with the older generation at the time?
Was Kent State a case of violence at a school?
