Thought the subject line would catch a little attention.

I have looked at all kinds of baja boats with the 496 in them. I like them, but they are not very loud. The sound seems deep but I like the really loud cracking kind. Kinda like jeff's stinger boat in the clip.

Does the factory exhaust have packing in it or built in mufflers? Or could it simply be those big rubber flappers keeping the noise down?

Usually if the boat is equipped with Corsa Quick and Quiet exhaust it will have the Corsa muffler tips. You can just take off those tips and put on a set of regular tips. I did it on my 24 Outlaw and will probably do it on the 29 I have now.You can get a set with internal flappers from Eddie Marine for about $150 and they're easy to install.

NASD,
I bought the longer EDDIE MARINE tips with internal flappers, I havent put them in yet, but it should be a simple job with a hammer and block of wood.

I also have the EDDIE MARINE cup holders, but I only bought the ones fro the cockpit . (2) are what EM calls Large, and (2) are what EM calls Medium. Youll see what I mean on their website. Once I put these in I will know what size I need for the cabin.

i ran CMI with totally dry pipes for abtou 5 hours. It wa sjust too much. WHen i say dry I mean dr eth water dumped out through hoses in eth transom. The coolign water and eth exhuast gas never mixxed. It was too much even for me.

First Born and my self have the same engine. Mine has a bit more crack, and the only difference is I run CMI's. And Tony runs the Gils. The Gils are a manifold, so I believe if you want your boat to crack, lose the manifolds and go to headers!

Baja will not ship a boat out without some form of muffler system. I already tried. This started sometime after 1999. (my 1999 272 came with captn's call no mufflers).
My 2002 29 Outlaw came with mufflers. I immediately bought Corsa staight tips with the water baffle inside and it made a big (noise) difference.

Nasdboy,
I had the Gil exhaust and put the Eddie Marine angled tips on. 12" to the end of the tip with internal flappers. This was a 1996 322 with twin HP500's carb'd. They were the loudest thing around. I sold it to a guy who still runs it in the Chesapeake. Great boat and over 80mph!

If the 496's have the factory baffles somewhere in the pipes it will be a bit quiet,
they are a round plastic item & easily removed although they are factory recommended as an anti-reversion device. Its a pretty fair bet that these will in the system somewhere, they should be no closer that 14" from the manifolds.
When I first put the boat in the water I blew all of them out.
the rubber flappers quieten them down too.
Mine has factory manifolds & 4" pipes straight thru the transom, no switchables, It still has the factory baffles & the rubber flaps on the outside.
the short vid that starts off the Speedwake screensaver (coming out under a bridge) is my boat,
I'm very proud of that !!

that cracking sound you hear from Jeff's stinger MPG clip is the cam
Dont be fooled cams will radically change the sound of a boat top to bottom
I made my own exhaust and with my big honkin cams in it (see the video in the video section) she is loud and that is at idle
she is perfect in my opinion
does not sound like I have the stock manifolds on it but I do the risers however are modified to be dry
worked like a champ with the cam so no reversion problems.
I love it
plus headers are rediculous expensive

Tom makes a point but I dont think the key to all performance boating is top end able to beat everyone out there
remember there are guys that can afford like Jet set (40 skater with twin like helicopter turbines in it ) and all that that most of us cant even touch
I wanted loud cause I like it that way
been runing cars through stupid catalytic converters for ever and always muffled and all that
this is my thing where no emissions, no elite noise enforcement and all that other restrictive jazz
now Tom to a point is right you dont want to sound like you have fire breathing 900 HP SC's and be maxed out at 35 MPH but also remember, be safe, dont exceed what your hull can handle and for what it is worth, maybe some add on performance goodies like hydraulic steering and or yank the tabs and get K planes would be better for over all performance rather than just stuff some monster cubes in front of that alpha or bravo drive and hold on
to me safety is more important that having that fountain kick my butt and me having to come in second,
if he flips his boat and im "the looser in second place" then hell Ill take that any day of the week!
Since I have had just about no seat time in my boat I dont want to go that fast yet, I want to spend time getting to know her and how she reacts and flies and lands and runs and handles first.
after 20-30 hrs, THEN I might feel comfortable enough to run her up into the 70's
but for now, 45-50 is fine with me
Hell just seeing her with running engines would be a plus

OnemoreMPH,

Cams do help with sound, but actually no matter what kind of cam the engine is running, a dry exhaust system without internal baffles or flappers, etc is what is going to give you that deep rumbling trash can crackling sound that I think you're looking for. GIL Marine or even Stainless Marine are good choices, but you must tell them that you want a DRY system. Because an aftermarket exhaust system breaths better it tends to lean up the fuel mixture better and you should notice a bit better midrange and fuel economy.

Kaama,

Thats what Im talking about! Being the fastest or having the most power is not what Im looking for.

Being out on the water and enjoying a nice earful of bigblock is what I like!

With a dry system, can the silent choice still be used?

OneMoreMph, That was always my theory---I always knew I would never be the fastest so why try. Yes, my boat is fast, but there are TONS of boats that are much faster than mine. For the most part, I just want to look good and sound good and have LOTS of FUN! I have always liked the sound of a nice set of engines with dry exhaust too----even if they didn't make that much power----as long as they sounded good that's all I cared about.
No, I don't think you can incorporate Silent Choice with a DRY system but I am NOT sure because you need a one piece tailpipe/riser, but you can add some external mufflers on the ends of the tailpipes----the Shotgun Mufflers from Drew Marine would be good enough----they open and close automatically and are relatively inexpensive.

By the way, no matter if you put blowers on the engines or put bigger cams in the engines----you WILL NOT get the sound effect that I KNOW you are looking for UNTIL you install a DRY exhaust system. Hope that helps! :)

I have a 454 MAG with a blower and wanted it louder. It had silent choice and Corsa mufflers. I was going to install Eddie Marine manifolds and Dry pipes for that really loud nasty sound, but then i got the quote and ***t a brick! Dry exhaust cannot be used with silent choice and the motor must be pulled to remove the y-pipe!!!!!Instead, I replaced the corsa tips with Eddie Marine Slash cut tips with internal flappers. took her out the other day and i can report that it is way louder and has a really nice sound. Good Luck :D
