If you get a ship's mortgage the interest rate is lower but they require documentation. Apparently it is a international form of identification that makes lienholders rights easier to exercise. Also it drives law enforcment nuts when they look for # on the side!!! The sales tax issue is big and there is no renewal costs yearly. But, you do need in some states to pay an annual usage tax for waterways, usually cheap though! Check this link....

Wow, free advice from an attorney-and correct at that. The LEO part is correct-no sticker so they are gonna come looking. Not good if your in Toddy Time. Like driving with too much to drink with no tail lights. It says "come check me out-free probable cause". Thanks for the good answer d-hlaw.

Gilla,
keep in mind that probable cause is defined differently in boating than anywhere else. You can be stopped for "safety checks" at any point during your ride on the water. If your gonna be up to nonsense, the water is not the place.

Well I had to document mine to get the loan for the boat, the mortgage comany required it on all boats. And yes, I had to pay tax to the Texas parks and Wildlife for the boat. Not quite as much b/c they allowed for no tax on the trailer so I had to deduct that from the price I paid for the boat. Man, that was one expensive trailer ;) :p: There is no renewal fee, unlike registration here in Texas, I just got my documentation renewal and had to mail back confirming no changes.

When did you get the documentation renewal? I registered mine last january (2002) , but havn't recieved anything yet.
I got mine exactly 11 months after the date the original documentation was signed. All it was was a 3 folded post card sized piece of paper. You just tear off the side with your info on it and drop it back in the mail. I put mine back in an envelope and mailed it back, just b/c it had my info on there with the Nasdboy name on it.
Someone mentioned before that you renew after the first year, and I think every third or fifth after that.

Had too look for it, got me thinking that I could not remeber seeing it in a while. Its just a piece of paper that looks similar to a birth certificate, blue boarder, has the vessel name, my official number the hull number. Now that I read this it expired february of 2003, I mailed it back in January and dont think I have gotten another certificate like this back yet. The back has stuff on it for the "sale of the vessel"

The phone numbers are on here as follows
800-799-8362
304-271-2400
304-271-2405 fax
I will scan it in and send it to ya, its only valid for one year, and you must notify them 2 weeks prior to expiration that you have not recieved renewal.

I documented my 340. $177 is what I paid, I believe. Did not have to pay sales tax (major savings!) and don't have the frigin numbers on the bow.

Have not even had a second look from law enforcement. Knock on wood!

Good point on stopping anytime for a safety check.

Note:
I will include a new paragraph when I change subjects in the future-sort of a lawyers guide. :laugher:

Example:
The LEO part is correct-no sticker so they are gonna come looking. Not good if your in Toddy Time.

Bay Springs, part of the Tombigbee Waterway, is in a dry county. (Yes, still some dry counties in MS) Some of the local water police would watch boaters with binoculars, looking for alcohol consumption or folks putting beer cans in koozies. Then, on their random safety check, they would cit for illegal posession of alcohol. Policial pressure on the sheriff stopped that little scheme.
