That would mean your boat, which probably weighs at least double mine, and has 14+ liters of power is more economic then my boat which weighs in at 2500 pounds max and has a 3.0 liter engine?

I burn 14-15 gallons per hour at cruising speed, and 30+ @ WOT.
My new boat weighs in at 10,950 dry. My old Liberator was just under 6,000 pounds, it was a very heavy 26 foot boat.

The Libby would top out around 53MPH, depending on the prop I had on it.

The area of the Chesapeake Bay we traveled in the Libby is the same as with the Formula. The Libby did have thru hulls so I had a tendency to let it talk to me on occasion, the Formula is quiet.

We used that old boat much as we do this one, like a car to make a dinner run in the evening. The fuel burn in that old Liberator was significantly higher and required higher octane fuel than the Formula.

I am absolutely convinced the greatest change in fuel consumption comes from the changes in technology.

I would wager that if three like boats were going to the same place at the same speed, my 2007 33SS, a 2002 33SS and one from the '90s, you would see a significant difference in fuel burned on the same trip as the age of the boat was increased.

Hmmm.....you weigh 7500 pounds more then me, and have 11 more liters......

I still can't figure how you would burn so much less fuel then me.....maybe my numbers are off?
How old is your boat?

Those 496 drink 60-70 gph @ wot, you do not get 2-3 mpg , a 35ss gets 1.21mpg@39 mph its best mpg with the same 496s and bravo 3s
I think you are correct in your statement about WOT fuel burn, especially in older models. I don't run my boat at WOT for any more than a few seconds and can count on one hand the number of times I did that, so I really have no idea what the fuel burn would be.

The only thing I know about the 35SS, aside that I like it, is it weighs 2,500+ pounds more than my 33SS and is only 7 inches longer than my boat.

I can tell you from my experience with a small Galaxy I owned some years ago with a 4 cylinder IO power.

The boat ate gas like it had a hole in the tank! The only thing that would have made that boat worse on fuel would have been an outboard engine!

My read on little boats with little engines are they are typically run at WOT all the time just to get to 35MPH! Not to mention they will beat you to death in the process, at least in the body of water I play in!

When I sold my Libby in 2006 and started my search for another boat. I wanted something more family oriented with enough length to cross the bay in the crud and not have my wife having a white knuckle grip. It also had to fit on my lift, beam & weight were the main factors.

I saw a new 30 foot Sea Ray express cruiser at a boat show priced at $99,995, I had to see how they did that! One of the ways they did it was with twin V-6 power. This boat was a 35 MPH cruiser at best.

Now, 35 MPH is the speed I cruise most of the time so the Sea Ray would have fit the need but it would be running at WOT! Twin V-6 mercury engines will burn a lot more fuel than twin 496 Mercury power at 35 MPH, I don't care what brand boat they are in!

So, UP_ROKTOY I suspect your boat is in fact burning more fuel than mine possibly for the reasons I just stated.

My boat is an outboard, cruises no problem at 30 mph @ 2500 rpm. As for getting beat up, I ride very soft, (Think Superboat/pantera/activator/sunsation) probably much softer then your liberator did/does.

I never cruise slower then 50-55, typically run 70+ most of the time, so that is I am sure a HUGE difference.

I think you know why you're burning more fuel than I am. :p:
I still wonder if I can burn as little as you cruising at 35?

I can run 55 at just under half throttle (going by feel here, I have a gas pedal) and the boat doesnt seem to be working at all.....

IF it warms up enough I am going to go run the boat for a half hour straight at 35 mph and see how much fuel it uses.

Pre EFI and Pre direct injection I would agree with you.....

Evinrudes E-Tec Direct injected motors and Mercs Optimaxes are doing incredible things.
That's all very nice but remember, your 2 stroke is burning fuel every time the piston goes down, a 4 stroke is burning fuel every other time the piston goes down.

So logic will suggest, all things being equal, you are burning twice as much fuel with your engine.

Your numbers are from an old publication.

Formula did not offer twin 350's in a 33SS for 2007, the smallest power was twin 496s.

The performance numbers for twin 496 is 62 MPH right from Formula for the 2007 model year.
