454 mag to hp500?

Back to the Scarab Bill and I were talking about last week. I just spoke with a salesman.

The engines were rebuilt 50 hours ago. They WERE a 454 mag.....they were rebuilt with a hp500 kit from Merc....

Anyone familiar with this change?

This isn't like putting a wee wee on a woman, is it? ( it looks like it might work, but not really )

HP500 Specifications :
Propshaft Horsepower: 470/350
Displacement (Liter/CID): 8.2/502
Cylinders: V-8
Bore (in/mm): 4.47/113
Stroke (in/mm): 4.00/102
Compression Ratio: 8.75:1

454 = 4.250" x 4.00"
502 = 4.466" x 4.00"

They would have had to replace the blocks, hence they couldn't have rebuilt the 454s.

I am hoping to get close with my build.

.30 454
9.61 comp
990 rectangle port
Air gap intakes
228/230 544/544 cam
bore notch
950 hp carbs

I should know in couple months when we run one on the dyno.

I'm not doubting that the motors were rebuilt to 500hp. However, I seriously doubt it was a "mercury kit".
