Do Optima batteries require special holders? If so, why? Previous threads have talked about problems with Optima batteries in marine applications. Where can you get battery hold downs for marine installation of Otima batteries?

there are some nice billet holder made specially for Optima batteries.

Most Optima problems in my expierience have been from shore power.

Optimas dont like high amp chargers

The three boats I've put them already had the cheap plastic type holders like pictured below. I just re-used them.

If your a billet bling person, then you'll have to probably get a new box for the Ultima's ???????????

I have 4 Blue Top Optimas in my personal 37AT, and I LOVE them. You can't even see my batteries when installed and behind all of my stereo stuff, but I sprung for purple billet mounts when Trick Marine was still around.

CPPerformance, Eddie Marine, Livorsi, Dana Marine, Rex Marine, and all the big parts houses offer Optima mounting boxes with some bling action.

All Sydwayz Edition Active Thunders also come with Optimas.

Why is that? Just curious what went bad with yours...Thanks
Not sure, but I went through 6 of them on 2 summers, in the Fountain. Had Interstates as well and never had a problem. Only reason I replaced the Interstates is becasue I can get Optimas at cost. Everytime I would bring them back, they agreed with me that they are junk from the amount of problems across the board they have seen. I will say, they have a great warranty, I would call ahead and tell them I needed a new battery, then walk and and get a new one, no pro rating at all..

I have had great luck with mine...Cheap plastic mounts too.
You must not run your boat hard enough! :D

The plastic one I had broke. I replaced it with one from Eddie marine.

As far as batteries, I use plain old Sears Die-hard marine batteries. I replace it every other season, although it will last longer.

You went through 6 in two seasons,,,,, the 272 had 2 for 6 seasons !!!!!!!!

The only time I have ever had a problem with them is when shore power was involved.

They are in every car I own, and I never even took them out of the boat for the winter.

They are the only thing that will play the stereo for more then 1/2 hour before being dead.

No I havent tried stingers or any AGM yet.

Oh,,, icing one the cake,,,, cheap b@stard that I am,,,,, I only run the red tops to !!!!!!

OK,,, not just cheap,,, I dont think we need deep cycles the way we use our boats.

I'm going to stand by my above post. I have Blue tops, the ones made for marine use, the ones made for shore power charging, and the ones designed and marketed, and priced :)D) for marine use. I don't have electricity where my boat is stored at the moment. The batteries have not been touched, nor has the boat been charged or run since October. I checked the batteries the other day, and they are still charged to 12 volts, and ready to turn the motors over, and they work the trim pumps just fine.

A lot of "holding a charge" has do to with how your electrical system is wired, as in quality and if the isolation of the batteries and circuits is done correctly.

Nope, I'll be the first to admit my deckboat probably doesn't get NEAR the abuse your rigs do...

The deckboat had these in it when I bought it. I have just been lucky with them.
I have been a big fan of Interstates also. ALWAYS had good luck with those, even in my Broncos, that DID get BEAT ON hard.
I have 2 DieHard Marine's at home also. Those were/are good too me. Especially the one that must have 6-7 seasons on it now.
I won't complain about either of those brands. This will be 3rd season for the Optimas.

And since I was not that clear, I was in a hurry... but they would only last a month or so before they would not hold a charge anymore...

I think I even called you to see about battery drainage even with the cable NOT connected to the batteries!!

For those who have had great luck, good for you!! But no more for me! The place where I got mine does not even sell them anymore becasue they got tired of dealing with returns from batteries going bad...

It Was NOT the electrical system, never had problems with Interstates. Plus, to check over things, when I would bring the boat back to my shop after boating, I would completely disconnect the batteries and 2 dasy later DEAD!!!! Yea, blue tops as well!! Sorry, but no more Optimas for me...
