Hi everyone I just bought a 1992 liberator 221 this weekend and LOVE IT! However with a half a tank of gas and 7 people in the boat I could only get it to run about 45mph. Is that normal? I have a 21' pitch mirage plus prop on it. It there anything I can do to get more top speed without spending a ton of money? The engine is all stock with only 370 hours on it. THANKS!!

261 Liberator

I have a 261 Liberator w twin 460 King Cobras absolutely a great boat the fords are heavy but they make power at low rpms, its navy blue and light blue I have some pics on the www.ifourwinns.com forum have had it to 56 mph ( GPS ) in 3 to 5 footers with plenty left had to slow it down it was gettin kinda violent we made Don Johnson look like a sissy that day will post pics later good to see many fans of this old boat mabe we can plan a reunion some time ?

I am looking at the same boat in Michigan. What does that top out at with a 351?
My guess is the stock 351 has about the same power as a stock 350. My 201 Libby ran 52 mph with a stock 350 with 270 HP. I then had the prop lab finished and it hit 55 mph as a top speed. To go up from there, required more HP.

greygoose1 - I sold my Liberator in August and never GPS'd it at any point during my ownership. However, the new owner did GPS it shortly after he bought it and he told me it ran 57 on, as he said, a smooth day (somewhere around Chesapeake, VA., but I don't know where he used it there). It was a Jasper 351 and a SS prop, but otherwise stock. I hope that helps at least a little.

Best wishes on any boat you may be looking to buy. :)

The Jasper 351 could be considerably more powerful than stock. They have their Class 2 Performance Marine 351W engine that produces 305 hp @ 4900 rpm and 397 ft. lbs. torque @ 3600 rpm. The stock 351 had 240 hp or 285 hp (for the High Output version) at the crank. So the 201 with the Jasper would run 2 mph or so faster than the 351 HO boat and 6 mph faster than the base 351 boat.

Wow, good to know. How can you tell if it has the HO or not? The only thing I noticed it said was king cobra on the intake over.

In the brochure for the 1992 201 Libby, Four Winns states that the boat will have a top speed of 49-51 with the 240 hp engine and 52-54 with the 285 hp engine. Both are with a 19" Viper prop. The brochure states that with a 330 hp 454 engine the boat will go 56-58 mph with a 21" Viper prop. My guess is the factory underestimated the speeds some or tested the boat with a heavy load.

But does the motor actually look any different or have a different engine code? Or, do you just assume what you have based on speed? (which doesn't sound right to me)
