Anyone on the ram question...??? Steel body works if powdercoated??? I'm looking into a SS parker cylinder anyhoo...

Here is what i started with....this is the linkage from the transom mounting plate to the ram for 2 way movement. Bushings are just in there for looks at this point. We didn't have a slice of 1" keystock so I improvized by milling square a piece of 1.5" 316 barstock.

holes are 3/8" and 1/2"

Jigged the uprights while I burned it...

The base still needed some relief from the heat warp. Used an arbor press and a propane torch. then tossed it in the sand bucket to cool evenly. Stainless is funny...gotta cut slow and weld as cold as possible without losing penetration. (look for the rainbows :winker: )

anyhoo...still gotta make a large plate for the inside. prob 1/8"x6"x4" and the blocks you see here will spread the load over the plate on the inside.

5/16" SS thru-bolts...

Time to go grind the boat now....I'm home from (boat)work  :laugher: :laugher: :laugher:

Sprint, what are you making for a wing plate. The Imco wing plates are nice, but very pricey!!!! That is why I haven't looked into adding steering with the Alpha. I already have the rams and mounting plates for the transom!!!

Keep up the awesome work!!!!!

by..."wing plate" i can only assume you mean the plate that mounts the ram to the outdrive...

I have the upper bearing plate (top plate) at work to pull the bolt pattern from. I plan to make a simple 2 dimensional plate that sits about 1/2" over the top of the bearing cover with a drop bracket on the front corners both linked around the front for strength. Spacers under the plate to hoist it up I'll make a quick drawing and post it... it just something I've seen while surfing the net. I'm not re-inventing the wheel here... just doing what has been proven to work...maybe a bit beefier too. I always overkill!!! :beard:

but I'm really tired and hungry, and now absolutely smothered in god awful resin dust...getting grumpy.

You know NstyLX... I could weld 2 plates together to make a copy while fabbing... :boo:

btw...just finished grinding the entire hull with a 24 grit 4.5" disc.....FUN!!!!....ALL DONE!!!

wanna hear something gross?....k.... I kept getting harder to breathe through the mask as the dust clogged it. So I kept telling myself..."breathe deep and slow so I don't inhale this chit....don't worry only a few more sq/ft to go".... Finished it all up...eyes filled with resin paste I climbed from the boat under the curtain (which WORKS) and stumbled through the back door and tore off my mask.....well when I did that i smeared about a handfull of snot all over my F'ing face!!!

:sb: :sb: :sb:

What mask are you using? Don't mess around with that stuff, get a good 3M P95 mask if you don't have one already. Lowes has them for about $30 bucks, refills (canister/particle) for $20. I went to a paint store and got a box of particle filters for like $15 I think, for a box of 10. This mask works good when you start glassing too, no vapors at all.

Well I spent most of the night messing with machines and takin care of biz... So I only got a drawing made up and plasma'd up 2 plates for the upper mount....below

i'll cut the rough shape out and get milling tonight....fridays are clean-up day so I'll have some time to work.

I'm figuring the plate for use of heim-ends on the ram-shaft. With a lower link between both mount holes to stabilize it horizonally.

NstyLX the second one is for you my friend. designed for dual ram. :winker:

excuse the highlighter lines they are sloppy....concentrate on the pen lines. It's just for looking at anyways...

I was originally going to bring the mount holes more toward the front of the drive....but I thought it may be a bit better to have less leverage on the plate for less likelyhood of shearing the bolts. It's not too late to change...input? front or sides?

this is where it spawned from...

I'll prob move the tabs forward an inch or so. I'll be using a shorter stroke than the cylinder I have here which is 14"...too long. I'll prob go with a 10" since i have a large volume pump.

What is the average length stroke for most aftermarket cylinders?

NstyLX...what cylinders do you have?

ok... I got the plates made up. Have yet to do the profiling and polishing so it still looks rough. Nevermind the sharpie lines drawn on there too....they were so i didn't cut too small of a piece.

Made up some .750 spacers to get it up off the bearing cover. I also moved the ram tabs forward and out more toward the corners...pic VVV

yes...that is 2 plates welded together on the corners. The holes for the ram bolts are only drilled to mark the location. I will drill to finish size when i figure out what size heim I'll be using.

Here is a pic of me before and after the wretched hell that was...grinding resin
