Jake, I still believe that boats that have a ton of money put into them for performance upgrades are great to own, but don't add significant value over book to a boat.
Don't know why you singled me out with that quote. When I had the Formula listed I was historically under any book out there. I was told by a number of knowledgeable people that ABOS was the industry leader for boat values. Not mentioning any names but a respected DEALER said my Formula had a RETAIL of 54,200 when I was asking 45,000 including all the upgrades. Look at what High Performance boat Dealers throughout the country list 15-20 year old Fountains, Cigarettes, Outerlimits, etc. for then go to NADA. Last spring I tried to buy a 1994 35' Fountain from a dealer that was asking 20K over retail because it had a new interior and 540s "BY OTHER" not Mercury. He offered me 18K under retail for mine. Said my Formula wasn't a very desireable boat. Guess where I told him to go.
Sorry for the rant, but you hit a nerve.

since we're posting the numbers NADA comes up with:

Un-accounted for are 90 hour old 630hp, 700tq 540's and a near new trailer......the trailer was $10K new, the motors cost $26K to build. While I certainly don't get what I've got in those 2 items, they do add at least $10K total to NADA.

Jake, wasn't meaning to single you out, if you were offended by my post, I apologize. I really fo appreciate all of the feedback I've got on this thread, and it ultimately comes down to what kind of luck and what everyone's experience has been selling their boats in this tough economy

And I was never complaining about people selling their boats who've actually researched what the value of a boat should be. It's the one's who will take an older boat that books out at 25k and ask 45 k.

Unfortunately, I don't have the means to buy those 100k boats you guys own that are just incredible . But I can always dream

just do like most people with $100k and up boats do... just go into massive debt. $800 a month for fifteen years lol

not saying everyone does, but there are Alot of financed boats on the market because of repo. i personally know someone who financed 100% of a new $135k boat for fifteen years just to have it repoed when he got downsized. his boat payment was almost as much as his house payment.

pretty sure T500hp paid cash for his 100K boat, ;)
Thanks Pete, mine is paid for, but PlowTown is right.
I have a buddy with a 1996 boat, $575 30yr house payment, $1,100 15 yr boat payment.......I just couldn't do that!!! His justification is a small house and no intentions of having kids is fine for them, they'd rather have a nice boat.

I started off with small/older boats. In the late 90's I started buying repo's, fixing them up and re-selling at a profit. Eventually I had a $100K boat that was paid for but it took ALOT of work fixing those things over a number of years....so much so as the market changed a few years ago I simply got tired of all the effort....My next one will likely be downsized because I insist on cleaning every inch after use and 38 ft gets old for simple day trips on the river.

I stopped and talked to a very large and reputable broker in western ny today to look at a 1987 34 ft. Express. It was in door storage so I wasn't able to look at it. But we had a long talk about the boat business. Number 1 was that they based all of their pricing on the NADA book. He said that's what the banks go by, and they do as well. He also said that the banks are calculating their loans by taking the low retail, not counting for any options, and loaning 90 percent of that. He said they get alot of people who want them to broker boats well above NADA, but they won't do it because they won't sell.

The other interesting thing he said was that banks won't even think about financing anyone with a credit score below 700. It turns out the banks got burned really bad in this economic downturn financing boats

my latest observation from my boat search is that the newer boats (not super custom hot rods), are usually priced close to book value, and the people with older boats seem to think they own the queen mary, and want WAY over book
